We're the lucky ones. We don't have to fight just to survive. We have normal jobs. I clean the halls. It might not look like it, but you should have seen it before.

Christie Young is the sole cleaning staffer aboard Rivet City in Fallout 3.

Background[]

Christie and her family (husband Henry and daughter C.J.) live what could be considered "normal," middle-class lives in Rivet City. While her husband works as a handyman and mechanic for devices around the ship, she cleans the halls and keeps the ship's public areas tidy -- both thankless but necessary jobs.[1][Non-game 1] Christie's marriage is peaceful, and she enjoys chatting with Henry about his work,[2] or going on walks with him on the flight deck.[3] They also strive to raise their daughter well, reading her bedtime stories and allowing her ample play time (provided she does her chores, of course).[4][5][6] If C.J. ever goes missing, she and Henry would both be worried sick to the point of refusing to speak about anything else.[7][8] Although she doesn't know much about Rivet City's history, Christie is glad that she and her family are able to live there without having to fight to survive.[9]

Like her husband Henry, Christie looks down on residents of the hangar deck, viewing them as ungrateful and unqualified and even saying they should "know their place."[10] Her biases against the hangar deck are so strong that she refuses to go anywhere where she might encounter the "wrong sort."[3] As a result, she neglects the hangar deck on her cleaning duty, believing the residents are slobs who should learn to clean up after themselves (which is not entirely untrue, although it is her job to clean the entire ship).[11]

Relationships[]

Christie loves and is proud of her family.[12] She and her family are devout Christians; they attend service at Saint Monica's Church every Sunday, sitting in the pews while listening to Father Clifford's sermons and thanking God for blessing their family.[13] All three Youngs are very appreciative of Father Clifford's and Diego's services,[12][14][15] though C.J. and Henry have gotten bored of the father's repetitive sermonizing of "Saint" Monica.[16][17]

Christie and Henry's character flaw is that of pompousness,[18][19][20] believing themselves to be far superior to their peers from the hangar deck based on their behavior.[21] As part of this, the Youngs do not get along with Cindy Cantelli, who dislikes them for their pompous attitude (and is jealous of their happy marriage).[11] Cindy's dislike for them is so intense that she would continue to taunt them even in the wake of a family tragedy.[22] Despite this, Christie gets along better with some of the other market vendors. She is friendly towards Gary Staley, who runs the restaurant where they have their meals, and will be happy for him and his daughter Angela if her marriage proposition with Diego succeeds.[23] Seagrave Holmes is also amicable with her, and has offered to buy any interesting junk she finds while she is cleaning.[24] Finally, she has a very positive opinion of Bannon due to his job as a council member.[9]

The Youngs also look down on Tammy Hargrave, calling her "dreadful" and a "very troubled woman" for her rudeness and alcoholic lifestyle. Tammy is emotionally abusive towards her son, James,[25][26] who is friends with their daughter C.J. Tammy tries to drive them apart, despising the Youngs for showing disdain towards her.[27][28] Like others around Rivet City,[29] Christie is not too happy about C.J.'s friendship with James Hargrave. Still, both she and Henry are hopeful that C.J. will be a positive influence on James (and that James won't be a negative influence on C.J.),[30][31][Non-game 1] and they are perfectly willing to let C.J. play with James.[6] For her part, C.J. does try to be a positive influence on her friend. For example, she has tried to get James to attend church with them, at the behest of Father Clifford; Tammy has shut this down.[32]

Daily schedule[]

In the morning and early evening she can be found in the Rivet City market, usually to get something to eat at Gary's Galley. In the late mornings and afternoon, she can be found on the upper deck, sweeping the floors. At night she sleeps in her family's quarters on the upper deck.

  • You Gotta Shoot 'Em in the Head: This character informs the player on the potential whereabouts of Ted Strayer.
  • The Runaways: If James Hargrave is convinced to run away from Rivet City, C.J. Young will follow him. Unlike James' mother Tammy, Christie and Henry will immediately notice the children's disappearance and inform security about it.[33] If she or Henry are talked to during this, they will only say they are worried about C.J. and refuse to talk any further. This will also add the note C.J. Young is missing if it hadn't been obtained before. They will only engage in conversation again after C.J. returns to Rivet City, and they will be very grateful to the Lone Wanderer for bringing her back.[34]

    (Henry Young's dialogue)
  19. C.J. Young: "Mom, is James' mom going to go to hell?"
Christie Young: "Shhh! Don't say things like that in church. Now be quiet and listen to Father Clifford."
(Rivet City conversations; C.J and Christie Young's dialogue) Note: This may only occur when the Young family is sitting in the pews at Saint Monica's Church (7 to 10 AM on Sundays).

(Rivet City conversations; C.J. Young's and Christie Young's dialogue) Note: May only occur when the Young family is eating at Gary's Galley. Christie's response depends on whether or not Henry is alive (first response) or dead (second response).
  22. Cindy Cantelli: "Come to spend some of your hard earned caps, Henry? I'm afraid I'm all out of moral superiority."
Henry Young: "Take your sarcasm somewhere else, Cindy. It's not my fault you married an addict and I have a family."
Henry Young: "Have you no sense of decency? I just want something to dull the memory. I can't believe she's dead."
(Rivet City conversations; Cindy Cantelli's and Henry Young's dialogue) Note: May only occur when Henry is eating at Gary's Galley. Henry's response depends on whether or not Christie is dead; if she is, the second response is used rather than the first.
  23. Christie Young: "Congratulations! I'm so happy for Angela and Diego. Have they set a date yet?"
Gary Staley: "Thank you. No, they don't have a date for the wedding yet, but it will be soon."
(Rivet City conversations; Christie Young and Gary Staley's dialogue)
  24. Seagrave Holmes: "Cindy, don't forget to bring by anything interesting you might find while cleaning the deck. It might be worth some caps to you."
(Rivet City conversations; Seagrave Holmes' dialogue) Note: Christie does not have a response assigned for this conversation, and Seagrave misnames her "Cindy" in his line. Otherwise, the line plays without incident.
  25. Bugged Tammy Hargrave: "Did I ever tell you about my husband? Got me pregnant with that brat James. Then he ran off. Asshole."
Dr. Zimmer: "I could really care less about you and your brat, Madam."
(Rivet City conversations; Tammy Hargrave's and Zimmer's dialogue) Note: This dialogue will never occur because Zimmer's package conditions prevent him from leaving the science lab. Bugged
  26. Brock: "Tammy, why don't you take the night off and spend it with James? If there's a repeat of the other night, Belle is going to kick you out."
Tammy Hargrave: "James? Who knows where that little shit has run off to. Mind your own business, Brock. I'm going to get a drink."
(Rivet City conversations; Brock's and Tammy Hargrave's dialogue)
  27. Bugged James Hargrave: "Mom, can I go to C.J.'s?"
Tammy Hargrave: "No. I don't want you hanging around that little bitch. She and her parents think they are so much better than me."
James Hargrave: "She's not a bitch, you are! I hate you! You're ruining my life."
(Rivet City conversations; James and Tammy Hargrave's dialogue) Note: This may only occur when James are sandboxing in the common room. Tammy's response incorrectly checks for Vera Weatherly as the target. Thus, it will not play. Bugged
  28. Tammy Hargrave: "Stop that! Don't make me smack you. I oughta lock you in your goddamn room, you little brat. And stay away from that C.J. bitch from now on."
James Hargrave: "I wasn't doing anything! And C.J. is my friend. I hate you! I hope you die!"
(Rivet City conversations; Tammy and James Hargrave's dialogue) Note: This may only occur when Tammy and James are sandboxing in the common room.
  29. Harkness: "C.J., don't do everything James tells you. He's a bad example."
C.J. Young: "James isn't so bad, Chief. He's my friend. I'll make sure he's good."
(Rivet City conversations; Harkness' and C.J. Young's dialogue)
  30. The Lone Wanderer: "Why do you let that James Hargrave kid play with your daughter?"
Christie Young: "That poor child. His mother, Tammy Hargrave, is a very troubled woman. She spends too much time down in the Muddy Rudder, drinking and using foul language. I feel so sorry for him. I think CJ is a good influence on him, but I do worry about the two of them."
    (Christie Young's dialogue)
  31. Christie Young: "Henry, I'm not sure I like C.J. playing with that Hargrave boy. His mother is just dreadful, even if she is on the upper deck."
Henry Young: "Don't make a fuss over it. TheirIn-game spelling, punctuation and/or grammar just kids. Besides, maybe C.J. will rub off on James and not the other way around."
(Rivet City conversations; Christie and Henry Young's dialogue) Note: This may only occur when Christie and Henry are sandboxing in their room. Also Tammy Hargrave is considered among the hangar deck denizenry.
  32. Father Clifford: "Saint Monica bless you, C.J. Have you spoken to James about coming to church? I'd really like to see him here."
C.J. Young: "Thank you, Father. I tried, but his mother said no. Sorry."
(Rivet City conversations; Clifford's and C.J. Young's dialogue) Note: This may only occur when Father Clifford and C.J. are wandering around Saint Monica's Church in the hour after Sunday services.
  33. The Lone Wanderer: "Have you seen C.J. Young lately?"
Commander Danvers: "Christie told me they were missing. I'll alert the rest of the security guards."
    (Lana Danvers' dialogue)
  34. The Lone Wanderer: "I found C.J. She was on the lower deck with James Hargrave."
Henry Young: "Thank you for finding C.J. I was worried sick about her."
    (Henry Young's dialogue)
  35. Henry Young: "How's your food, dear?"
Christie Young: "Better than last time. I hate the taste of Mirelurk."
(Rivet City conversations; Henry Young's and Christie Young's dialogue) Note: May only occur when the Young family is eating at Gary's Galley.
