Wow. That thing is definitely carrying around a bunch of Enclave intel. Adams is on the eastern seaboard of the country. Which means this little "Duraframe" sucker somehow managed to survive for over two thousand miles. Certainly lives up to its model name.

ED-E My Love is a companion side quest in Fallout: New Vegas.

Quick walkthrough[edit | edit source]

  1. Find and examine ED-E in the Nash residence in Primm.
  2. Talk to Johnson Nash and mention the robot sitting in his store.
  3. Repair ED-E and take ED-E with you as a companion.
  4. Trigger ED-E's first audio log via dialogue about technology or the Enclave.
  5. Allow five in-game days to pass.
  6. Trigger a second audio log via dialogue about technology or the Enclave.
  7. Allow two in-game days to pass.
  8. Get contacted by the Brotherood of Steel and the Followers of the Apocalypse.
  9. Give ED-E to the Brotherhood or Followers to upgrade him.
  10. After three in-game days, the upgraded ED-E will return to Primm.
  11. Talk to ED-E.

Detailed walkthrough[edit | edit source]

Finding and repairing ED-E[edit | edit source]

ED-E is located in the Nash residence in Primm. This building is on the corner opposite both the Vikki and Vance Casino and the Bison Steve Hotel; on your right if crossing the bridge into Primm from the nearby NCR camp. It also the local Mojave Express office, and has a large sign on the roof.

ED-E is lying on the counter inside the building. Examining it will reveal that it can be fixed with the appropriate skills, or items:

  1. A Repair skill of 65, or a Science skill of 55 and a subsequent lowered Repair of 35.
  2. One scrap electronics, three scrap metals, and two sensor modules.

Talk to Johnson Nash, and mention the robot sitting in his store. He will reveal that he does not know much about it, and offhandedly suggest taking it to the junkyard near Novac. This is a hint about a possible audio log trigger. After ED-E is repaired, it must be recruited as a companion in order to progress the quest.

Playback event triggers[edit | edit source]

There are two pre-recorded messages within ED-E that need to be played back in order to have the quest progress. The triggers for these messages are specific words or phrases found in the dialogue of different non-player characters, usually occurring while talking to someone who used to be in (or talks about) the Enclave, or someone who talks about technology.

ED-E's keywords can be triggered through new and old conversations with certain people, but they will not be activated if you have already completed a quest for them. Many individuals on the following lists can be spoken to in order to trigger either audio log #1 or #2. However, once they have triggered the first message the same person cannot trigger the second.

Audio log #1[edit | edit source]

To trigger the first message, do any one of the following:

When the message is triggered, you will be turned to face ED-E and an audio file will begin playing:

Subject E: Diagnosis complete. Begin Recording.

My name is Whitley. I'm a researcher at Adams Air Force base. Until recently I was in charge of the Duraframe reinforcement project for the combat model Eyebots.

Eyebot Duraframe Subject E is both the prototype, and the last functional model in this test group.

I was prepared to make several significant upgrades to the machines.

However, as the project was canceled and all Duraframe assets are being diverted to Hellfire Armor, I am sending this model to the Navarro outpost.

If you are listening to this log from one of our Enclave Outposts in Chicago, give this unit whatever repairs it needs so it can continue to Navarro.

— ED-E, Audio log 1

After this message has been triggered, the quest will be added to your quest log, and ED-E will not react to any of the keywords until at least five in-game days have passed.

Audio log #2[edit | edit source]

After passing at least five in-game days, do any of the following:

  • Talk to Old Lady Gibson at Gibson scrap yard. (If you have already gone through her conversation options before starting this quest, talking to her will no longer trigger this message.)
  • Talk to Ignacio Rivas in the northwest corner of HELIOS One near Fantastic and ask him about ARCHIMEDES.
  • Listen to the Brotherhood Scribe (found in a classroom inside the Brotherhood bunker in Hidden Valley) teach his class.
  • Talk to a Brotherhood Paladin around Hidden Valley. They may mention not having seen this type of eyebot before.
  • Talk to Colonel Moore for the Brotherhood assignment in the quest [[For the Republic, Part 2.
  • When trying to gain the Brotherhood of Steel's trust (without the help of Veronica), a keyword is spoken after killing or convincing the NCR ranger to leave Hidden Valley.
  • Complete Still in the Dark, leave the Hidden Valley bunker, and return again after waiting a few days. A Brotherhood Scribe will thank you and tell you of a footlocker stashed with recharged energy ammunition. If you try to talk to this Scribe again, ED-E will immediately play the message.
  • Speak with Veronica Santangelo while on the quest I Could Make You Care, and after accessing Father Elijah's terminal.
  • When you first talk to Michael Angelo on his workshop at the New Vegas Strip, talk about his "lack of inspiration" and choose the medical answer. It will still work even if the requirements are not fulfilled.
  • Talk to Quartermaster Mayes at Camp Forlorn Hope about locating supplies sent from Helios One for the Restoring Hope quest.
  • Talk to Doctor Henry at Jacobstown about his previous employment with the Enclave.
  • Talk to Apprentice Watkins both about her parents and her decision and ask her about all the computers.
  • Talk to Dr. Hildern at Camp McCarran about the quest There Stands the Grass.

As with the first triggered message, you will be turned to face ED-E and the second audio file will begin playing:

Download Complete. Begin Recording.

Navarro outpost scientists, I am glad that ED-E has reached you. You will find several databanks of information on this machine.

Please handle this information with the utmost care as it represents the sum total of the results of my research on the Duraframe Eyebots.

There are also several databanks with information on my research into Poseidon Energy and some projects they were working on in the Mojave area.

— ED-E, Audio log 2

ED-E upgrades[edit | edit source]

Two in-game days after the second recorded message is triggered, Senior Knight Lorenzo of the Brotherhood of Steel will contact you through ED-E.

Uh... Hello? Hi. Are you there? Oh, right. You can't respond. Listen, I'm using your robot as a relay to get this message to you.

I've picked up some unusual chatter regarding your robot. It seems that it has some information that we could use. Oh wait, where are my manners?

This is Lorenzo, a Knight with the Brotherhood of Steel. We'd be very interested in examining your tech.

Could you bring your robot to one of our patrols so they can examine it? I'll have the robot mark the location on your map.

Bring ED-E to a patrol near the REPCONN Headquarters. Once there, go to the third floor where you will find two dead members of the Brotherhood scouting party. A holotape note will be next to, or in the inventory of one of the corpses.

Immediately after you get this note you will be contacted by April Martimer of the Followers of the Apocalypse, who asks you to bring ED-E to them instead, saying that ED-E's log data will serve a greater purpose if examined by the Followers. She is located in the Old Mormon Fort (just inside Freeside's North Gate). (If you have already received the holotape note by previously exploring REPCONN Headquarters April won't contact you until you open the metal gate that surrounds Hidden Valley.)

If you have previously discovered a way into Hidden Valley, Lorenzo will ask you to bring ED-E to him there. He will then be immediately interrupted by April Martimer's message.

Hi there, my name is April Martimer. I monitored a communication earlier between you and someone with the Brotherhood of Steel.

I'm with the Followers of the Apocalypse. We are much more liberal about the sharing of technology than those Brotherhood... People.

Bring your robot to us, we'll see that whatever information it may have on it is used for the greater good.

Either option will not affect the player's standing with the Brotherhood of Steel or the Followers of the Apocalypse, so the choice purely weighs on which bonus is more imperative to them:

  • If the Brotherhood examines ED-E, it will get a defense bonus (+8 Damage Threshold). Also, it will have the bumper stickers, rust, and dirt removed, revealing a clean and shiny metallic surface.
  • If the Followers examine ED-E, she will upgrade its weapons (+5 DAM, +8 DPS, +0.5% critical chance and +15 critical damage). Its bumper stickers will be removed, but it will keep its default metallic surface.

Both factions need to examine ED-E for 3–4 days, during which time it will not be available as a companion.

When the wait for ED-E's return is over, the quest advances and a message will appear saying that ED-E has returned to Primm. Enabling its companion protocol again will complete the quest.

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • If you have previously entered the Hidden Valley bunker (with Veronica, for example) you will not need to recover the entrance password from the Brotherhood squad in the REPCONN building.
  • If you have killed everyone in the Hidden Valley bunker, April Martimer will automatically contact you after two days.
  • The numbers of in-game days listed above do not always work as it is implied they should when using the "wait" feature. However, not receiving a message after waiting does not mean the quest has glitched or failed.
  • As of patch 1.3, ED-E's inventory will not be cleared after he is returned to you.

Journal entries[edit | edit source]

1 (Optional) Bring ED-E to the Gibson Scrapyard in Novac.
5 ED-E appears to have some Enclave log data stored that is triggered by some keywords.
7 The Followers of the Apocalypse would like to see ED-E to get access to the logs he has stored.
10 Find the patrol Knight Lorenzo told you about to let the Brotherhood of Steel examine ED-E.
12 The patrol Lorenzo mentioned is dead, perhaps there is something on one of the corpses that may be useful.
13 There was a password on one of the Brotherhood corpses. Perhaps that could be used to bring ED-E to Lorenzo.
15 Speak to Knight Lorenzo in Hidden Valley about ED-E.
20 Lorenzo would like to examine the data on ED-E. He offered to upgrade ED-E's armor while he was working on it.
25 Lorenzo is examining ED-E and updating its armor. It should be ready in a few days.
30 April Martimer with the Followers would like access to ED-E's data. She promises to upgrade its weapons while she works on it.
35 April has ED-E and will be working with it for a few days to access the data and upgrade its weapons.
60Quest finishedED-E's upgrades are complete.

Behind the scenes[edit | edit source]

  • The name of the quest is a reference to the 1956 song "Eddie My Love" by The Teen Queens, which reached #14 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in March of that year.

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png If the player talks to Old Lady Gibson and goes through all the dialog before recruiting ED-E, she will no longer trigger the log. Go speak with Ignacio Rivas or any NCR trooper inside HELIOS One instead. This can be resolved on the PC version by using the resetquest 001572e8 setstage 001572E8 10 commands in the console to reset.
  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png After completing the quest, ED-E may suddenly stop following you and be unable to attack, but will still be responsive to dialogue and can still be used as a storage container. It usually happens once you enter combat and he may begin following again once you fast travel or go through a door. This bug may still persist later on, however.
  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png When Lorenzo contacts you through ED-E, he will inform his interest in examining it. However, after he mentions what he wants, and instead of saying, "Whenever you get a chance, can you bring your robot back to Hidden Valley so I can take a look at it?" a male voice will say, "Could you bring your robot to one of our patrols so they can examine it? I'll have the robot mark the location on your map." The player may get stuck and can only turn directions. As of the latest patch on PC, this is now solved. One of the two dialogues will be triggered, and it should (according that you had the second dialogue with the male voice) point to a dead Brotherhood soldier on the top floor of the REPCONN Headquarters.
  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Sometimes, when ED-E is given to the Followers, his laser appears to stop working, and trying to change his weapons on the companion wheel shows no name.
  • PCIcon pc.png Sometimes, talking with the right people won't trigger the first message, and neither will the console commands. In this case, try waiting several days before trying to activate the first message. There has been success receiving the first message after a 10-day wait.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Sometimes, if you upgrade ED-E's laser in one save, ED-E may spawn with his upgraded laser in a new save. This enables ED-E to upgrade its armor while having a laser upgrade.
  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png If ED-E is with the player when they enter Dead Money, he will return to Primm. Retrieving it will result in being hostile to anyone, including the player. This happens whether or not you complete ED-E's quest, but if you do, the quest will be grayed out on your Pip-Boy, but the last step on the quest will mysteriously remain unchecked as if you never finished it. As of patch 1.3, this bug has been fixed.
  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png After getting the upgrade from the Brotherhood of Steel, ED-E will sometimes become immobile. Reloading to a previous save works, but only for a short amount of time. No known fix.
  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png If you get the upgrade from Followers of the Apocalypse, ED-E will randomly go and disappear, even though you can't see ED-E, he is still there to interact and fight, this can be fixed by reloading the save.
  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png After talking to Old Lady Gibson the game will freeze if it is installed to the hard drive. This is fixed by uninstalling it or re-loading a previous save file.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png After getting ED-E back from the Brotherhood at Primm and restarting its companion protocol, it is possible to kill it and keep its Enhanced Sensors perk permanently.
  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png Sometimes ED-E will not respond to a second quest trigger, though his weapon system will be upgraded. This results with an ED-E covered with bumper stickers firing blue projectiles and the quest being unable to be completed.
