Jack Smith is part of a family of cannibals living in Andale, along with his wife Linda and their son Junior in 2277.

Background[]

Jack Smith appears to be Andale's patriarch, priding himself on the town being the best that Virginia has to offer, with a heavy emphasis on rejecting the outside influence that the Capital Wasteland presents.[2] The Smiths appear exceedingly friendly, to a point where it is strange, and the Lone Wanderer may then find out it is due to their unusual diet.[3][Non-game 1]

Presenting himself as a loyal U.S. citizen and father, Jack and his wife (and sister) Linda have a son Junior Smith. While his wife cooks and cleans the house, he goes to work with his neighbor (and brother) Bill Wilson in the "family business." In this enterprise, they preserve and maintain a centuries-long local tradition: cannibalism. Wastelanders passing through are allowed by the local families to stay in town and become accustomed to the warm attitude and reception of them. This facade is meant to catch the travelers off-guard when they are killed by the residents.

Jack reveals himself as a political conservative when chatting to the player character, stating that in elections held in Andale, he never votes for "those beatnik liberal commies,"[4] instead claiming that it is "every American's civic duty to cast his vote for his favorite Republican candidate."[5] He believes that democracy is "God's best gift," coming second only to family.[6]

Upon passing a Speech check or Cannibal perk option, Jack also mentions how people judge him and his family for being cannibals, and mentions a parent from Rivet City begging to be spared from being another one of their victims. Jack then informs the Lone Wanderer that they are welcome in Andale, and specifically to Linda's meat pies.[7]

  1. The Lone Wanderer: "Huh. Well, everyone's got to survive in their own way, I guess."
Jack Smith: "You see, now that's nice to hear. Every time someone discovers our little secret, it's always "oh, you're terrible people", or "how can you do this?" I mean, I've got a family to take care of here. I've lived in Andale my whole life. And my father before me, and his father, and his father's father. This town started out with just four families, and that's the way we've stayed. Small town and proud, eh?"
    (Jack Smith's dialogue)
  2. Jack Smith: "Hello there, fellah! Good to meet you! Name's Smith, Jack Smith. Welcome to Andale, the best little town in Virginia!"
The Lone Wanderer: "Virginia? Virginia's been gone for 200 years."
Jack Smith: "Not here. Not in Andale, no sir. The great Commonwealth of Virginia is alive and well. In fact, we just voted ourselves a new governor!"
    (Jack Smith’s dialogue)
  3. Jack Smith: "Hey there, stranger. I've got something that I want to talk to you about. I couldn't help but notice that you're poking around in my basement. So, be honest now, You wouldn't know anything about that would you?"
The Lone Wanderer: "Yes, I was in the basement."
Jack Smith: "And did you see anything... unexpected there?"
The Lone Wanderer: "You know, now that you mention it, there were a bunch of bodies in there."
Jack Smith: "And do you have any thoughts on that?"
The Lone Wanderer: "No, not really. Everyone does what they have to."
Jack Smith: "Well, that's good to hear, friend! Very good to hear, indeed. You wouldn't believe how judgmental some people can be. Honestly. All I'm trying to do is keep my family happy and fed. Tell you what, talk to Linda. She'll give you some of her special meat pie. It's to die for! Ha! Hahaha... but not you. You're good people."
    (Jack Smith’s dialogue)
  4. The Lone Wanderer: "So who did you vote for?"
Jack Smith: "Now, now, my vote is my business and no one else's. But I'll tell you one thing: we didn't vote for any beatnik liberal commies, that's for sure."
    (Jack Smith’s dialogue)
  5. The Lone Wanderer: "You voted for governor? How does that work?"
Jack Smith: "The adults walked right on down to the polling location and dropped ballots into the box. How do you think it works? Yessir, it's every American's civic duty to cast his vote for his favorite Republican candidate. Am I right?"
    (Jack Smith’s dialogue)
  6. Jack Smith: "Yessir, democracy is God's best gift, right after family, of course."
    (Jack Smith’s dialogue)
  7. The Lone Wanderer:"I almost grabbed a snack while I was there, but that would have been rude."
Jack Smith: "You're right, it sure would have. You know, you're a breath of fresh air. Every time someone discovers our little secret, we have to hear about it. It's always "oh, how can you do this", or "you're such terrible people", or "please, not me, I have a kid in Rivet City". Well, I have kids too! Family first, that's the way it works in Andale from the day that the first four families decided to stay here. You're not bad, stranger. Stop on by anytime and ask Linda for one of her special meat pies."
    (Jack Smith's dialogue)

    "Jack Smith:
House-proud and vehemently opposed to outside influences, the Smiths are a strange but reasonably friendly bunch. Jack seems to be Andale's patriarch, and he knows the best little town in America is here, where Linda bakes a delicious meat pie!"
