Sword! Of course! Weapons, my boy! You name it, I've helped someone kill it.

Scribe Peabody is the proctor of the Order of the Sword, in charge of the armory for the chapter of the Brotherhood of Steel in the Citadel in 2277.

Background[]

As proctor of the Order of the Sword, Peabody is head of the armory, in charge of maintaining, researching and developing all of the chapter's various weapons and their systems.[1] A weapons expert extraordinaire,[2] he is already modifying the current armaments of the Brotherhood to counter the new threat of the "black devil power armor" that the Enclave members are wielding,[3] and has previously used his expertise in helping repair Liberty Prime's weapon systems.[Non-game 1]

Although he has little respect for the knights,[4] he loves "field work" (unlike Head Scribe Rothchild) and often wishes he could go on combat missions with them and the paladins.[Non-game 1] He firmly believes that it is the scribes who make the Brotherhood what it is as they are the brains of the operation, with each Order serving a unique purpose that the knights' "pop guns and bravado" cannot compare to.[4] Peabody can be heard airing his frustrations to Elder Lyons regarding the Outcasts stealing uncatalogued equipment and causing a supplies shortage, leading to a lack of spare parts needed for weapon repairs; however, his concerns are brushed aside as he is told not to mention the Outcast leader's name within the Citadel, and to instead rely upon his own resourcefulness.[5][6]

Daily schedule[]

He is in the armory in the Citadel laboratory most of the day.

  1. The Lone Wanderer: "And the Orders are..."
Peabody: "Order of the Sword, Order of the Shield, Order of the Quill. Weapons, defenses, and research. Respectively."
The Lone Wanderer: "Let me guess. You belong the Order of the..."
Peabody: "Sword! Of course! Weapons, my boy/girl! You name it, I've helped someone kill it. I'm the Proctor of the Order of the Sword, you see. Weapons research, development and maintenance all my responsibility."
    (Peabody's dialogue)
  2. The Lone Wanderer: "Do you think you could repair my equipment?"
Peabody: "Ha! With my eyes closed! And I will, too. But it will cost you... outsider. Oh, very well. But make haste!"
    (Peabody's dialogue)
  3. The Lone Wanderer: "So... Any thoughts on the Enclave?"
Peabody: "So they have Plasma weapons! Bah! It's strong technology, I'll give you that, but limited in modification. I've already started removing the compensators on our laser weapons to cut through the black devil Power Armor of theirs. We'll drop them like any other meat, don't you worry."
    (Peabody's dialogue)
  4. 4.0 4.1 The Lone Wanderer: "Can you tell me something about the Scribes?"
Peabody: "Indeed I can! Pay no heed to those headstrong Knights, with their pop guns and bravado. It is the Scribes, the Scribes who make the Brotherhood what is truly is! The brawn is useless without the brain, hmm? He he he. Each Order of Scribes is dedicated to a unique field. All equally important. All more important than those dim-witted grunts."
    (Peabody's dialogue)
  5. Elder Lyons: "Hello, Scribe Peabody. I trust that things are well with you?"
Peabody: "Greetings, Elder. I wish I could say that things were well. Unfortunately, I am still having supply problems. When Casdin..."
Elder Lyons: "Scribe. You are not to speak the name of an Outcast in the walls of the Citadel. Is that understood?"
Peabody: "I... I understand, sir. But the Outcasts have stolen a great deal of our uncatalogued equipment. I am beginning to run short of supplies for repairs."
Elder Lyons: "Then make do with what you have. We may lack the Enclave's resources, but I'm counting on your ingenuity to make up for that!"
Peabody: "Yes, Elder. I understand. Forgive me for speaking out of turn. My... frustration got the better of me."
    (Peabody and Elder Lyons' dialogue)
  6. Elder Lyons: "Scribe Peabody. How does the day find you?"
Peabody: "Good morning, Elder. I'm sorry to report that things are not as they should be. Ever since Casdin was outcast..."
Elder Lyons: "That name is not to be spoken within this Citadel. Do you understand? I wish it were not so, truly I do, but he is Outcast. He has been judged."
Peabody: "I know the protocols, sir. But the equipment that they stole was very valuable. Our weapons are beginning to deteriorate without the spare parts."
Elder Lyons: "I understand, Peabody. But you'll need to make do the best you can. If our weapons can't penetrate that Enclave armor, we stand no chance."
Peabody: "Yes, Elder. I understand. I'm sure... we've got the parts around here somewhere..."
    (Peabody and Elder Lyons' dialogue)
