Look, if you just want to crack wise, go somewhere else. But if you've got stuff you want to sell, then I'm your man.

Seagrave Holmes (b. circa 2247) is the proprietor of Rivet City Supply in Rivet City in 2277.

Background[]

A genius tinkerer, Seagrave fixes anything he can get his hands on, but doesn't lord his abilities over others. He gets along well with common folk, fitting into their social world without even thinking about it.[Non-game 1] Now 30 years old, he has been a part of Rivet City's reconstruction efforts since early childhood,[1] and this has made him intimately familiar with the inner workings of the ship.[2] However, his years of repair work for the city have also left him with a chronic case of red-lung.[3] Even still, Seagrave truly loves the city, spending countless hours tinkering, and often loses track of time when talking about it.[4]

Despite his work for the city, Seagrave professes not to know much about its history or politics (due to his focus on keeping it afloat).[1] He only remembers that the ship was damaged by mirelurk nesting and super mutant attacks, which they managed to patch up over time.[5] However, he does also remember Horace Pinkerton, the last living person he remembers from the city's old days, who left for the separated bow of the ship around 2267 after an argument with the rest of the city's science staff.[6]

Seagrave spends his daily life managing Rivet City Supply, the general store in the Rivet City market. He claims that his store stocks "a little bit of everything."[7] He is willing to buy and sell anything in his store, even spare parts or junk, as he believes that it will be worth something to someone else.[8][9] His business model is a pragmatic one: No guarantees, rebates, or exchanges, and if you break it, you've bought it.[10] Sometimes, he even helps repair his fellow merchants' wares.[11] His nights are spent in a foolish effort to woo Vera Weatherly, who he's not-so-secretly in love with.[Non-game 1] He's not a religious man and doesn't attend church with her, despite her insistence.[12] The only time he will go to church is if Angela Staley and Diego get married, as he will be invited to the wedding ceremony.[13]

Because of his expertise, Seagrave was one of those in the Capital Wasteland who received a holotape with information about an escaped android seeking help. If asked about the rumors, he claims to believe it is merely a hoax.[14] However, if pressed further on the topic, with more specifications, it becomes clear that Seagrave does believe the rumors (claiming that "The Commonwealth" has tried to paint the rumors as a mere hoax) and takes it as a point of pride that he is in the know.[15] He is also aware that Pinkerton is the only person with enough skill to have carried out the modification procedures the android was said to have had.[16]

Council seat intrigue[]

As of 2277, Seagrave has decided that he wants to step up and take more responsibility in the settlement,[17] and is campaigning for the merchant representative seat on the Rivet City Council. His opposition is the incumbent Bannon, a self-important elitist who routinely exaggerates his own worth and flat-out lies about his role in the city's history.[18][19] Bannon has a vested interest in protecting his position, and is willing to bribe and blackmail others for an edge over his opponent.[20][21] Seagrave claims that Bannon treats the council seat like it's his own personal bank account, more representing himself than the market as a whole.[22] Bannon has admittedly made (failed) proposals to boost Rivet City's economy at the expense of those outside the city,[23] and between his willingness to commit blackmail and his lack of remorse when confronted for his lies,[24] he is not of top moral quality. However, it is true that he has not done anything that would truly harm Rivet City.[25][26] Unfortunately, the general public does not seem to be able to recognize Bannon's lies, accepting them simply based on his position.[27][28][29]

Bannon will waste no time to enlist anyone who is sympathetic to find a way to end Seagrave's campaign, claiming Seagrave is a shady character and that the city is better off without him in the seat; unbeknownst to him, Seagrave does have a shady past. Earlier in his life, Seagrave was a business partner of the slavers at Paradise Falls, and Eulogy Jones has made multiple attempts to have Seagrave open up Rivet City to the slave trade, all of which Seagrave has turned down.[30][31] If this became public knowledge, the Rivet City community's trust in Seagrave would almost certainly be ruined, as well as his council prospects;[30] on the other hand, Bannon's underhanded practices wouldn't endear him to the merchants either.

Relationships[]

Being the tinkerer he is, Seagrave fixes anything he can get his hands on, routinely helping his fellow merchants. This includes creating (and changing the locks on) a secure storage unit for Cindy Cantelli (to keep her addict husband out.)[32] He also has helped Flak and Shrapnel repair the more complicated weapons they acquire.[11]

Seagrave is also generally friendly to everyone on the ship. He is friends with Harkness,[33] and has a cordial relationship with the Youngs and Staleys.[34] He notifies Henry Young of new tools in his inventory,[35] and asks Christie Young to keep an eye out for anything interesting she might find while cleaning the ship.[36] He eats at Gary's Galley, where he banters with his fellow merchants and the rest of the denizenry.[37] Angela Staley routinely browses his wares while on break,[38] and should she get married to Diego, he will be happy for the couple (wistful at the prospect of marriage) and be invited to the wedding.[13][39]

Seagrave's infatuation with Vera is well-known. Seagrave accompanies Vera when she walks the flight deck every night between 9 p.m. and 12 a.m. He clearly wants to take their relationship into marriage despite her repeated rebuffs of his advances.[40][41] Despite her clearly stating that she prefers him as a friend only,[42] he continually presses his advances, no matter the occasion. When this happens while she is visiting the market stalls, she usually can dodge by visiting her friends Cindy Cantelli and Angela Staley as an excuse.[43][44] Seagrave gives Vera special treatment at his store as well, giving her special discounts and offers (which she takes full advantage of while recommending that he not do so).[45] Commander Lana Danvers, who dislikes Vera, tries to tell Seagrave not to bother with her, but Seagrave rebuffs this as Danvers' general attitude towards the Upper Deck citizenry.[46] In fact, despite their friendship, Vera actualy prefers the company of her Mister Handy assistant Mister Buckingham to that of her suitors.[Non-game 2]

Daily schedule[]

  • Seagrave is generally to be found in his shop or (often on the flight deck), trying and failing to woo Vera Weatherly. He can also be found leaving his room, (mid-deck next to marketplace entry) around 2-4 a.m. The Lone Wanderer can overhear that she does not want to be with him as he reeks of sewage.
  • Seagrave's store is restocked on Monday and Thursday.

Quests[]

  • The Replicated Man: Seagrave is in possession of a technical oriented Replicated Man holotape. He can be convinced to share the information with a Speech check, bribed for 100 caps, and a Science check. Further pressing him for information with a second Speech check another 100 cap bribe or a Science check will direct the player to Horace Pinkerton.
  • The Wasteland Survival Guide: Should the player ask him, Seagrave has the second most information about the history of Rivet City, barring only Dr. Horace Pinkerton.
  • You Gotta Shoot 'Em in the Head: Seagrave can inform the player on the potential whereabouts of Ted Strayer.[47]
  • Council Seat: Bannon mentions that "his"[22] council seat is being contested by Seagrave. He wants the Lone Wanderer to look for incriminating evidence against his opponent; the Lone Wanderer can search Seagrave's room for evidence of his connection to Paradise Falls. He can then be confronted about this.
    • Reporting Bannon to Commander Danvers for trying to blackmail Seagrave will cause Seagrave to provide a permanent discount at his store.[48] Bannon will price gouge the Lone Wanderer on his wares in retribution.
    • Reporting Seagrave to Commander Danvers will cause the inverse, with Seagrave raising the prices of his wares. However, Bannon additionally gifts a deathclaw gauntlet schematic.[49]
  • A Nice Day for a Right Wedding: Should Angela Staley and Diego get married Seagrave will be invited to the wedding ceremony.[13] This is the only time that Seagrave goes to church.
  • Overdose: Seagrave is one of the many characters that can inform the player of Paulie Cantelli's addiction.[50]

Other interactions[]

  • If the player asks for a recommended place to get a drink, Seagrave will recommend the Weatherly Hotel.[51]
  • He claims to have everything in the wasteland, but the player can mock him by asking if he has a set of T-51b power armor.[52]

Inventory[]

Notes[]

  • There is an unused response line for The Replicated Man quest that Seagrave would have said.[55]
  • There is an unused clue 3 response for The Replicated Man quest. It's conditioned for a variable taking the value -3, which means that the player would have to have found evidence somewhere (a note, terminal, etc) that Seagrave knows about the android tech. No such evidence exists so this doesn't occur.[53]
  • There is an unused prompt line that would have been for The Replicated Man quest in his dialogue files.[56]

Notable quotes[]

  • "You must be new. I'm Seagrave. If you've got anything you want to unload, stop by my shop, Rivet City Supply."
  • "Take a look around. I got all kinds of stuff in here."
  • "The shop's closed right now. Is there anything else I can do for you?"

Appearances[]

Seagrave Holmes appears only in Fallout 3.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 If you sided with Bannon during Council Seat, then his dialogue changes. His quote before his trade interface is "After what you did? Only because I have to." His lips do not move during "After what you did," but they do for "Only because I have to." [verified]
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 Seagrave can disappear from the ship, with no trace of where he has gone. [verified]
    • Due to this bug both Seagrave and Vera Weatherly can end up inside an inaccessible building near a makeshift super mutant camp north of Project Purity, engaging in endless looped conversation. Teleporting them back to the ship using console commands on PC seems to fix their behavior.

  1. 1.0 1.1 The Lone Wanderer: "What do you know about Rivet City's history?"
Seagrave Holmes: "Oh, I really wouldn't know. I mean, long as I can remember, she's just been here, soaking up all the repairs and attention we can give her. I grabbed a wrench and joined in the reconstruction pretty much first thing out of the womb, but I never really cared about the politics."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  2. The Lone Wanderer: "Vera spoke very highly of you. She says you know all about this place."
Seagrave Holmes: "She did? Well, I suppose I have picked up a lot over the years. I mean, no one's spent more time tinkering on this old girl than I have! Oh, Rivet City, I mean. Not Vera. I mean, Vera's not old. And I haven't tinkered on her, obviously. Not that I wouldn't... I mean, umm... No. Anyway, you might find some clues in Pinkerton's place, in the broken-off bow. He was around before me, and used to store stuff there before he left."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  3. Rivet City terminal entries; Rivet City Clinic patient data system, Patient Files
  4. The Lone Wanderer: "Enough about Rivet City."
Seagrave Holmes: "Oh, right. I sort of lose track of time talking about the old girl."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  5. The Lone Wanderer: "Well, what can you tell me about the reconstruction?"
Seagrave Holmes: "Oh, well, the old girl had seen a lot of damage, especially where the Mirelurks used to nest, and where the Super Mutants kept trying to get in. I guess the Mutants and the Mires got so busy fighting each other, it gave us the time we needed to make this place ship shape. Does that tell you what you need to know? Anyway, we're here in Rivet City, and she's in good hands, now."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  6. The Lone Wanderer: "Can you think of anyone from back then that might know more?"
Seagrave Holmes: "Last feller I remember from back then was Mr. Pinkerton, and he must've left about a decade ago, after that spat with the science team. He used to have a storage shed in the broken-off bow of the ship; we always thought he was crazy for keeping stuff there. Might have kept a couple records down there, I guess. Careful, though; ship's a bit treacherous down there in her belly!"
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  7. The Lone Wanderer: "What have you got to sell?"
Seagrave Holmes: "I've got a little bit of everything."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  8. The Lone Wanderer: "Anything? Chems? Guns? How about parts and junk?"
Seagrave Holmes: "Yep. I'll take it all. One man's junk is another man's treasure."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  9. The Lone Wanderer: "Just what the Wasteland needs, another junk vendor..."
Seagrave Holmes: "Suit yourself. Sooner or later everyone has stuff to unload that only I will take."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  10. The Lone Wanderer: "How do I know you won't rip me off?"
Seagrave Holmes: "You don't. No guarantees in the Wasteland. No rebates or exchanges either. Oh, and you break it, you buy it."
(Seagrave Holmes' dialogue) Note: This dialogue option is only available in the first encounter with him while his shop is open.
  11. 11.0 11.1 Shrapnel: "I can't get that god damned laser pistol working. Think I should ask Seagrave to look at it?"
Flak: "Nah. Just break it down for parts."
(Rivet City conversations; Shrapnel's and Flak's dialogue) Note: May only occur while Shrapnel is offering his merchant services and both Flak and Seagrave Holmes are alive.
  12. Clifford: "Saint Monica bless you, Vera. You have truly found peace through the Lord."
Vera Weatherly: "Thank you, Father. I've been trying to get Seagrave to come to church too, but he's stubborn."
Vera Weatherly: "Thank you, Father. I always feel the presence of the Lord when I pray here."
(Rivet City conversations; Clifford's and Vera Weatherly's dialogue) Note: May only occur when Father Clifford and Vera are wandering around Saint Monica's Church in the hour after Sunday services (between 10 to 11 a.m.). Vera will use the first response if Seagrave Holmes is alive and the second response if he is dead.
  13. 13.0 13.1 13.2 The Lone Wanderer: "When are Angela and Diego getting married?"
Seagrave Holmes: "Angela and Diego. It's about time, don't you think? I think I heard the ceremony is at 3 o'clock tomorrow. That's when I'm going to show up anyway."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  14. The Lone Wanderer: "Do you know anything about an android from the Commonwealth?"
Seagrave Holmes: "I reckon you're talking facial surgery and memory reprogramming. I always liked that story best. Boy, Wastelanders sure can spin a yarn. It's been a while since I heard that one."
(Seagrave Holmes' dialogue) Note: This conversation disables all further clue topics and adds a clue 1 holotape).
  15. The Lone Wanderer: "You know how they rewrote engrams in a cluster of Android memory subroutines?"
Seagrave Holmes: "Shhh! They might be listening. The Commonwealth has tried to make it out to be a hoax, but the escaped android is real I tell you! Listen to this holotape. It will make you a believer too."
(Seagrave Holmes' dialogue) Note: This conversation is an alternate line for Clue 3, use this Science check and receive a clue 3 holotape.
  16. The Lone Wanderer: "Do you know anything about the AI swap on that Commonwealth android?"
Seagrave Holmes: "Yep. Old Pinkerton. They say he helped found Rivet City. Must be some sort of crazy genius. He kind of vanished a long time ago. I don't know where he went, but you might ask around the ship."
(Seagrave Holmes' dialogue) Note: This conversation is a clue 4 conversation Science check that directs the player to Horace Pinkerton.
  17. Seagrave Holmes: "Hello, Bannon. Anything interesting happen in the last council meeting?"
Bannon: "We decided to build a railing on the flight deck, just as soon as we can get the scrap metal. Other than that, no."
(Rivet City conversations; Seagrave Holmes' and Bannon's dialogue) Note: Hearing this conversation will make it possible to ask about the Rivet City Council in dialogue.
  18. Bannon: "Welcome to Potomac Attire. I am Bannon, proprietor and City Council member. I carry discriminating attire for discriminating customers."
The Lone Wanderer: "I see you are also a person of refinement."
Bannon: "Between you and me, keeping out the riff raff is good for business."
    (Bannon's dialogue)
  19. The Lone Wanderer: "Could I ask you about Rivet City's history?"
Bannon: "Why, I practically set this whole place up. When I got here twelve years ago, it was just a handful of dead-enders squatting in a rusted-out rowboat. Now I'm on the council, and with my leadership, we're the strongest settlement in the Wastes! Of course, a few of those dead-enders still stick around, but who'd want to leave?"
    (Bannon's dialogue)
  20. The Lone Wanderer: "So you're on the City Council."
Bannon: "Doctor Li, Chief Harkness and I are all on the council. We meet every Monday morning. I can be very influential, if you know what I mean. Far more than Seagrave Holmes."
The Lone Wanderer: "Whoever this Seagrave is, you think he's a threat to your influence?"
Bannon: "A threat? No, of course not! Well, maybe. He wants to replace me on the council. He's a shady character, I just can't prove it. Now if someone were to find something incriminating in his room... Well, lets just say I would be very appreciative."
    (Bannon's dialogue)
  21. The Lone Wanderer: "Seagrave? Oh yeah. He's clueless."
Bannon: "So you've met him, eh? Well he wants to replace me on the council. Now, I can't have that. No siree. He's a shady character, I just can't prove it. If someone were to find something incriminating in his room... Well, lets just say I would be very appreciative."
    (Bannon's dialogue)
  22. 22.0 22.1 The Lone Wanderer: "Bannon tells me you're trying to steal his Council seat."
Seagrave Holmes: "Steal it? Hardly. He runs the council like it's his own personal bank account. He's supposed to represent all the market businesses, not just himself. It's about time he was replaced."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)

  24. The Lone Wanderer: "You lied to me about Rivet City's history! Pinkerton told me the truth!"

    (Bannon's dialogue)

  27. The Lone Wanderer: "Know anything about the history of Rivet City?"
Flak: "'Fraid I can't help you, pal. Been here for years, but all I know about the history is that it's a safe place to settle down. Maybe Bannon can help you out. He sure acts like he knows it all."
    (Flak's dialogue)
  28. The Lone Wanderer: "Do you know the history of Rivet City?"
Abraham Washington: "It's funny, now that you ask... I can tell you all about the Capital, but I really haven't got any idea about Rivet City itself. I can't see how important it is compared to the Capital's history, but maybe Bannon might know something. He's in the governing council, after all."
    (Abraham Washington's dialogue)
  29. The Lone Wanderer: "What can you tell me about Rivet City's history?"
Cindy Cantelli: "Well, I don't really know, to tell the truth. How does any city get started, really? But I've heard Bannon talk about how he was responsible for its success, so I'd ask him about it."
    Cindy Cantelli's dialogue)
  30. 30.0 30.1 The Lone Wanderer: "You've been doing business with Slavers, and I have a letter that proves it."
Seagrave Holmes: "If you had read that letter you'd know I'm no slaver and you know I'm not dealing with them. But if that letter gets out, they won't trust me. I'll never get a seat on the council and Bannon will make me pay for trying to replace him. If you care about Rivet City half as much as I do, tell Danvers that Bannon is blackmailing me, but don't show her the letter."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  31. Seagrave's incriminating letter
  32. Seagrave Holmes: "Hey, Cindy. How's that secure storage unit I made you working out?"

C.J. Young: "I am...I mean, thank you, Mr. Holmes."

  35. Seagrave Holmes: "Hello, Henry. I just got in some new torcIn-game spelling, punctuation and/or grammar wrench and some electrical test equipment. You should take a look at them when you're done eating."
Henry Young: "Good idea, Seagrave. I'll be by later."
(Rivet City conversations; Seagrave Holmes' and Henry Young's dialogue) Note: May only occur while Henry is eating at Gary's Galley (between 7 to 9 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m. daily).

  37. Seagrave Holmes: "Hey, Flak. I'd avoid the Iguana today. It gave me the runs yesterday."
    Flak: "Thanks for the advice."
(Rivet City conversations; Seagrave Holmes' and Flak's dialogue) Note: May only occur while Flak is eating at Gary's Galley.
  38. Seagrave Holmes: "Hello, Miss Angela. What brings you into my shop today?"

(Rivet City conversations; Seagrave Holmes' and Angela Staley's dialogue) Note: May only occur if Seagrave is currently offering his merchant services.
  39. Seagrave Holmes: "There's the blushing bride to be! Congratulations Angela. You and Diego will make a good couple."
Angela Staley: "Thank you Mister Holmes. We'll need lots of things for our new home, so I'm sure we'll be shopping here."
(Rivet City conversations; Seagrave Holmes' and Angela Staley's dialogue) Note: May only occur after completing A Nice Day for a Right Wedding by any means other than breaking up Angela and Diego, and before they hold their wedding, and only if Seagrave is currently offering his merchant services.
  40. Seagrave Holmes: "Vera, I know I'm not a sophisticated man, but I am a man, and I can take care of you."
Vera Weatherly: "I don't need anyone to take care of me, Seagrave. But I do like being your friend. Just your friend."

  43. Cindy Cantelli: "Hey, Vera. Still dodging old Seagrave? He's got eyes for you."
Vera Weatherly: "I know, I know. He's nice enough, but just not my type. Take care, and don't spread too much gossip."
(Rivet City conversations; Cindy Cantelli's and Vera Weatherly's dialogue)
  44. Vera Weatherly: "Hello Seagrave."
Seagrave Holmes: "Vera! Wonderful to see you. You look lovely today."
Vera Weatherly: "Stop! You're embarrassing me, but thank you. I should go. I want to see Cindy and Angela too."
"Stop! You're embarrassing me, but thank you. I should go."

  45. Seagrave Holmes: "Hello, Vera. I just got in a new hot plate. I can sell it to you at a discount."
Vera Weatherly: "You need to stop giving me special discounts, Seagrave. A new toaster oven would sure be handy though. I'll pick it up later."
(Rivet City conversations; Seagrave Holmes' and Vera Weatherly's dialogue) Note: May only occur when Vera is wandering around the Rivet City market.
  46. Lana Danvers: "Hello, Seagrave. You shouldn't waste your time with Vera. You can do better than her."
Seagrave Holmes: "A man can hope, Danvers. Besides, I don't have a problem with the Upper Deck like you do."
(Rivet City conversations; Lana Danvers' and Seagrave Holmes' dialogue) Note: May only occur if Vera Weatherly is still alive.
  47. The Lone Wanderer: "Where can I find Ted Strayer?"
Seagrave Holmes: "Have you tried the common room? That's where he sleeps. Otherwise...hmmm. You can probably find him on the flight deck some days, if it isn't raining. He usually goes to the Muddy Rudder on Sundays. Beyond that, who knows."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  48. Seagrave Holmes: "Hey! I heard that Bannon got caught trying to frame me. I also heard you ratted him out. I think you've earned a true, blue friendship discount."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  49. Seagrave Holmes: "You sneak into my room, steal my property, and then tell the world about it. I'd ban you from my shop if they'd let me. Instead I'll just have to settle for ripping you off."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  50. The Lone Wanderer: "Did you know that Paulie Cantelli is an addict?"
Seagrave Holmes: "He's totally strung out. It's going to kill him one of these days."

  51. The Lone Wanderer: "Do you know where I can get something to drink?"
Seagrave Holmes: "The Weatherly Hotel is a good choice. It's on the upper deck."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  52. Seagrave Holmes: "Howdy. I'm Seagrave. Seagrave Holmes. I have a little of just about everything here."
The Lone Wanderer: "You got a T-51b? No? Then you don't have everything."
Seagrave Holmes: "A what? Look, if you just want to crack wise, go somewhere else. But if you've got stuff you want to sell, then I'm your man."
    (Seagrave Holmes' dialogue)
  53. The Lone Wanderer: "I found some info on a Circuit Neuralizer. Care to elaborate?"

  1. 1.0 1.1 1.2 Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.95: "Seagrave Holmes
Seagrave Holmes, 30, is a genius tinkerer and fixes anything he can get his hands on. He spends his days in the shop, and at night, he hangs around the Weatherly Hotel to talk to Vera Weatherly, who he's not-so-secretly in love with. Seagrave has that easy way of relating to common folk. He fits into their social world without even thinking about. While he is exceptionally gifted with machines, he never lords that over others."

  2. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.102: "Vera Weatherly
Vera Weatherly, 27, is young, attractive, ambitious, and very proud of all she's achieved. She opened the hotel on her own—she even helped construct it—and decided on the name after reading about the real location in a book. She is quiet and demure on the outside, but with an inner determination that cannot be shaken. Vera likes Seagrave, but only as a friend. She prefers the company of Mister Buckingham, her Mr. Handy robot, to that of her suitors. She is the cousin of Bryan Wilks."

Seagrave Holmes salvaged this Mister Gutsy. He's a bit confused about where he is and who all these other humans are. Harkness set him to guarding the Armory in the security tower, but he's far from reliable."
