Hello folks!

Did some rewritting for the Explosives skill page. I mostly tightened up the writing, added related links, and removed irrelevant links. For example, I nixed all the talk about dynamite--because there is none in Fallout 3, and because Explosives is a skill limited to this game. I also clarified what I understand the Explosives skill does not pertain to.--Brian ranzoni 03:30, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

FO:NV[]

im not sure about others experience, but i found the damage of most explosive weapons to be fairly weak and combined with unusually slow reload times on most weapons only to be effective for the rare circumstance you needed area damage.

i think to make explosives worth the skill point investment, outside of disarming traps, you would need to invest into all the associated perks such as demolition expert x3 and splash damage... and considering the limited amount of perk slots in new vegas seems rather difficult to do without making a specialized character.

then again i suppose most weapons are that way in new vegas, if you want them to be effective you need to take a certain amount of perks to support them, and you become specialized into a one dimensional fighting style. i suppose they considered it more balanced, but one dimensional fighting also gets boring after a while.

-It does seem to be that way. While there are a few exceptions such as C-4 and incredibly overpowered missle launcher, most explosives in NV seem to be pretty underwhelming without 100 in the skill and a bunch of perks, and even then they're kind of blah. No sneak attack damage (due to explosives being area of effect), horrible VATS targeting that misses a lot even in the 80%+ range with most of the grenade launchers, and the generally short range of launchers and thrown weapons that prevents long distance combat and turns close quarters into self-mutilation, make it a pretty crappy main combat skill. Not to mention all the extra weight thrown and planted explosives add if you keep a good supply. The one up side and saving grace of this skill is that if you go with a "tank" build and can live through the splash damage it makes an incredibly good "crowd control" skill if you find yourself lacking means of taking out enemies before you're swarmed. Still, I only recommend this skill to advanced players who want a challenge or players who want to turn the difficulty down to easy and do it just for pure laughs as body parts fly everywhere.I've heard rumons that the Gun Runners Arsenal DLC is supposed to help by introducting plasma grenade rounds to some of the launchers, but have fun with your irremovable goo piles everywhere. 72.174.218.227 00:08, September 16, 2011 (UTC) DEV1ANTGAMER

Vertibird Bomb[]

I'm just going to throw this out there, but I've never had 50+ explosives, and I've always been able to disable the bomb.--BWM

Repeats[]

Some of the stuff on the page repeats. Could someone fix it? God's in his Heaven... All's right with the world 23:21, May 24, 2011 (UTC)

Deleted repeats[]

OK, I deleted the repeated section but I am kind of new, so can someone make sure I didn't delete something important by mistake?--Christian Broach 02:52, June 4, 2011 (UTC)

Terrible Bug: Explosives Don't Work[]

I don't know why, but none of my explosives weapons seem to work properly anymore. I'm trying to complete all the Challenges, and the ones involving explosives are a real pain because none of my explosives are doing damage. With launchers, I have to score a direct hit to get a piddly little bit of damage (at least compared to the claimed damage for the weapon). If I don't hit the target directly, there is no area effect to speak of. I just dropped 10 (yes ten) C-4 Explosives right at the feet of two deathclaws. One deathclaw took exactly one point of damage, and the other took none. This is ridiculous, just really getting tired of all the shitty bugs in this system, including FO3, is anyone else getting this ridiculous glitch?--The.true.samiam 03:21, August 25, 2011 (UTC)

Nobody can get the same bug if you don't list your system. System? Nitty Tok. 03:47, August 25, 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, PS3, with Classic Pack and all DLC's so far installed. I am level 50 with 100 in all skills, including explosives.--The.true.samiam 04:03, August 25, 2011 (UTC)
Ok, I've done some testing, my explosives seem to work fine with humanoid characters such as humans, ghouls, supermutants, etc., but with many animals such as deathclaws, geckos, and bloatflies (it is really embarrassing using 10+ grenades to kill a 15HP bloatfly haha), there is no effect numerous times, and then finally, after a direct hit, they work. Don't know if that helps.--The.true.samiam 03:12, August 26, 2011 (UTC)
Hey cool, apparently that ^^^ was the 240,000th edit on the wiki.--The.true.samiam 03:13, August 26, 2011 (UTC)

same happens to me, its ridiculous when coyotes survive 4 mini nukes... I've found using tin grenades on the cazadores at the tribal village works ( i think the presence of human enemies activates the splash damage that affects the cazadores). Other than that you have to do direct hits which is impossible with grenades so forget using those for anything.--68.119.72.121 15:08, May 31, 2012 (UTC)

This is by far the dumbest bug in the game. I've been trying to do the Crackerjack Timing challenge, and as if it wasn't hard enough of a challenge by itself, about 90% of the time explosives stop doing damage. Sometimes they'll even stop doing damage to me, despite standing directly on top of them. PC version. Have thrown over 200 sticks of dynamite and have only managed to kill 8 cazadores, though at least 30 of them have been right on top of the stick when it went off. 50.160.123.51 15:08, Apr 14, 2015 (UTC)

Skill Requirement not met - penalties (New Vegas)[]

So if you don't meet the minimum skill level of an explosive weapon, what is the penalty? Specifically I'd like to know what price I pay for using Nuka-grenades without having 100 demolition skill. I can assume they would be less accurate, but would they be thrown more slowly also? And would the launcher weapons suffer the same penalties? Wish I had the pc version to try to research this, I can't believe its not listed anywhere here. Holythirteen (talk) 23:02, February 18, 2013 (UTC)

Pyromaniac relevance?[]

I can't find any relationship between the Explosives skill and the Pyromaniac perk. Could someone determine if I'm just missing something obvious, or delete the Pyromaniac claim? 69.234.22.123 09:07, August 10, 2013 (UTC)

Weak in New vegas[]

Explosives seem to do close to half of stated damage in New Vegas.
