Tactics[]

  • Some Deathclaws will patrol near the gates, giving players a good chance to kill them from the outside of the town

as the Deathclaws cannot get to the player immediately and must walk around. However, be 100% sure you can kill them fast, if they get away from you to walk around, they will more than likely bring multiple Deathclaws with them when they go to confront you on the outside, which will usually result in death for the player, as there will usually be 2-4 Deathclaws if you have not cleared the rest of the town. If you set up mines ahead of time, you can also use this to trick the Deathclaws to confronting you but stumbling across a player-set minefield.

  • Try not to enter Sewers though trapdoor to avoid running into 3 of the Deathclaws in the Sewers
  • Using a stealth boy, can, if you're careful, allow you to go through Old Olney unnoticed. However, it is likely you will be discovered in the small chambers of the sewers.
  • The Railway rifle I found was invaluable. Simply aim at one of their legs and since you have such a high chance to cripple it, take your sweet-ass time picking them apart with any weapon you choose.
  • The dart gun is the best gun to have to fight theses guys (even more so if your going it alone) as it will cripple all limbs right away(this goes for anything you hit with it) it will slow the deathclaws down to a cralw and so long as you keep a decent distance between you and it you can kill one without ever getting hit

Well, for Small guns players, it is a good tactic to give them a headshot from far away and then use your combat shotgun in V.A.T.S. I killed all of them without having to heal myself. A simple tactic is to have Dogmeat act as a tank and then you can pick it off with any weapon, even a melee weapon. Secondly, another tactic for beginners or very low level characters. Would be to take out at least one leg. That way even if you are using only a 10mm Pistol (even at very low quality), you can VATS the head while walk/running backwards.

Loot[]

In the sewers there's an additional room near the power armor and the generator room in which you can find a workbench and bottlecap mine on it.

Old Olney Grocer[]

After coming here several times, the last now being after obtaining the Nuka-Challenge quest, there is no Old Olney Grocer anywhere in town. If there WAS, it was destroyed in the war. The only buildings in town are inaccessible due to ruble or boarded up doors and windows. Nothing is found in the sewers either that relate to the quest.

They may have intended that you find the crashed truck for the Quantums in there. There's also at least 1 Quantum in the sewer, in the room with the beds. --67.181.102.146 08:04, 31 January 2009 (UTC)

I scoped that place out for like 3 hours and found no such grocery store, I finaly got so pissed that I unloaded 9 mini nukes just for the hell of it and then, traveling for a rather long time I found myself in paradise falls. everyone liked me so I thought it would be a good time to boost my karma. I killed everyone and went looting, thats when I came across eulogys and wouldnt ya know it, I found 7 Quantums and 5 colas behind the staircase. thus proving, good things come to those who wait. ( little did I know I would need them for the nuka cola challange all wellNukacolacap 16:54, December 3, 2009 (UTC)nukacolacap

Stealth Boys[]

My last trip here I found at least a half-dozen Stealth Boys. I got the feeling the devs put them there because of the high deathclaw count. The edits to the safe implies they're random, is this true? --DarkJeff 19:38, 10 December 2008 (UTC)

Holy jumping Deathclaws, Batman!! Where did you find a half-dozen Stealth Boys?! (O_O) I've been through here twice; in my first game at a lower level, and again with my current play-thru at lvl 19 (about 3/4 to lvl 20, w/ Luck at 7, if that matters), and I only found two! Did you find them all in the safe?! I'd love to know if I've missed any that weren't in containers; some people collect Teddy bears, some people collect Pre-War money, I collect Stealth Boys, so I'd greatly appreciate the intel if there are some randomly scattered around, since I've never seen more than 2 in a single safe or container. Thanks ahead of time. - Fembot G.g3 06:44, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Issue of 'Guns 'n' Bullets'[]

Found that skillbook in the mailbox next to the crashed NukaCola truck.

Strategy[]

  • I raided Old Olney at level 6, and if you stick to jumping on rocks, the Deathclaws will mostly avoid you even if you shoot at them. This makes raiding the town much easier than a head-on assault.
  • The best way to kill a Deathclaw is to "snipe" it with dartgun then pick it off slowly with any guns... Provided, you dart it in an open space, you need to keep walking backwards away from it, and shooting it. If to be used indoors, make sure you use some high damage weapons to kill it off quickly, combat shotguns with VATS on the head are my preferred choice.
  • If you're lucky enough to of got back up from an Outcast Patrol, simply shoot it with a weapon. I found a minigunner, and 2 laser riflemen to help me, although with one swipe the deathclaw clawed death unto the minigunner. Surprisingly they can't kill laser riflemen. One went in th main street alone and didn't die!
  • My strategy (Good Karma Required) was to take Fawkes, equip my dart gun to a hot key, and cripple the Deathclaw's legs as they attacked. Then, all you had to is back up away from them and let Fawkes do the work! Fawkes and I took no damage, and I was easily able to obtain the power armor. (NOTE: If you want exp, you'll have to shoot the Deathclaw with another weapon as well as Fawkes is killing it.)

Nuka Cola Challenge[]

The reason why there is Nuka-Cola Quantum in Old Olney is cause they wanted to make the quest more difficult.True?--The Merc 09:05, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Not likely, considering theres usualy around 100 Nuka Cola Quantums in the game depending on Nuka Cola machine spawns. Its more than likely that people will comeplete "The Nuka Cola Challenge" quest without even finding old olney.

If they wanted to make it harder, they would just spawn deathclaws around Girdershade where the quest starts lol.--92.10.83.213 00:23, 27 April 2009 (UTC) They do spawn there... RIP mr. flying cow.--OfficerBlue 07:15, 2 May 2009 (UTC)

History[]

Isn't the history unlikely, "The first is that a military vehicle carrying Deathclaws may have crashed near the town when the bombs fell, releasing them and, after time, they started breeding. The second is that the sewers were being used by the military to test the genetically-engineered monsters and after time they escaped into the town. "

My point being, I don't remember a crashed military vehicle in the area or evidence that the deathclaws were ever bred in the sewers. Also, I doubt the fortifications would be there if the town was almost immediately infested by deathclaws. Also, it is unlikely they'd still be standing if they were almost 200 years old. Those fortifications are actually valuable, since they provide protection. (point being, people would try to make use of them or move them)

Now it seems to me that there were survivors there, they built defenses (possibly to originally defend against raiders). The deathclaws seem to me like they could hurdle the walls if they wanted to. As the population was killed, many people took refuge in the sewers, some even tried to dig out (did no one else notice the spoons?), but were unsuccessful.

From there, it is possible to guess why the population was there, they wanted to get into the vault. Maybe even survivors from the nearby vault took went to Olney and made a town there after they realized that the vault would drive them insane. Lastly, it is possible, since there have been "smart" deathclaws, that the deathclaws realize that the town looks like it could be populated by people (I know when I first saw it, I expected a real town) and decide to use it as a trap for naive wanderers (look at all the bodies). ````MainMeister

I found something interesting when i was in the sewers i followed what seems like an unnatural cave past the medical power armor theres a skeleton a tiny lil lamp, duck and cover, and a spoon....now think of the spoon for second...possibly someone dug it with that spoon? the reason i say this is because you cannot pick up the spoon and its huge compared to other spoons in the game.98.215.69.173 16:47, 15 May 2009 (UTC) I removed the conjecture from the article but feel free to post it back on this page. - Dweller93 22:53, 10 May 2009 (UTC)

It would be interesting to know the true history, but there just is not enough evidence for anything besides what you have changed the history to. I agree with it though. ````MainMeister

Actually, it may be possible that survivors from vault 92 did set up shop there (maybe with some other local inhabitants) because isn't the cault door open when you get to Vault 92? --MainMeister90 22:32, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Didn't the people of Vault 92 go crazy thanks to the white noise testing? I do remember reading about that but nothing says that crazy people can't build fortificaitons. All in all it's just one of those things that's up to the player to decide. Someone must have built the defenses as Deathclaws aren't intelligent over on the West Coast and skeletons say that someone was there. I guess we'll never now...KnightNapier 01:45, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Olney, a census-designated place and an unincorporated area of Montgomery County, Maryland, U.S., is located in the north central part of the county, twenty miles (32 km) north of Washington, D.C. If you consider where you actually find death claws,in subterranean habitats, in the other Fallout games, as well as Fallout 3's DeathClaw Sanctuary, it makes sense you would find them in Olney's sewers. Old Olney was probably a small settlement that was eventually overran by slavers(just like Rockopolis and Minefield, which was originally the town of Ridgewood.) Raiders moved in, a few deathclaws show up, the barricades were built in vain and now Old Olney is another deathclaw sanctuary thanks to its sewers.--Wert1978 (talk) 23:50, October 13, 2013 (UTC)

IF you are doing the nuka cola challenge quest there is a dead bloke on the fire station steps with a note about the location of the truck delivering nuka cola. Basicaly its east ot old olney.

Third Exit[]

There is a third exit from the Olney Sewers.. I think the main article should mention it. If you enter the sewers through the trap door entrance, go through the room with the protectron, make a left, and then make a quick right. You will come to a ladder which you cannot use.. The screen will say "Entrance to Olney Underground (requires key)".. If you go up to the surface (by some other exit from the sewers) and trace your steps to where the Third Exit would reach the surface, you will find that you are at the boarded-up house right near the trap door entrance. This third exit would probably reach the surface somewhere inside the house.

My guess is that Bethesda planned a theme or maybe even a quest for this house but was not able to complete by the Fallout release date, so they boarded up the house and made you need a key (which doesnt exist) to use the third exit from the sewers.66.249.9.107 02:01, 30 May 2009 (UTC)

Actually, the 3rd entrance is available on the "main quest" for the Broken Steel mod when you go to the Old Olney to find the Tesla Coil gun.

Bug related[]

About the bug with the Mercenary and two Laser Rifles. I've visited Old Olney twice on the same playthrough (I hadn't saved since several hours beforehand and a Deathclaw killed me) One time, I encountered the dead Mercenary and the two Laser Rifles and I think I found the Stimpak too. The second time I visited, I found the pool of blood, but no Mercenary, one Laser Rifle and the Stimpak. Worth putting in, or not? --Vault01 21:15, 1 June 2009 (UTC)

Sewer Trap Door[]

There is also third way to get out from the trap. Just clibm the sunken trap door (jump and move forward facing the surface). Harven 217.74.64.220 08:22, 19 August 2009 (UTC)

I had Fawkes and Charon in my party and jumped down into the "Trap Door" entrace of the sewer. Fawkes joined me and Charon did not. I couldn't get him to rejoin my party by waiting, or fast travelling. If I went any further than the first door of the sewer (and sometimes not even that far) I would get the message "Charon has died.". Had to reload from an earlier save. Anybody else have anything like this happen to them? V.A.T.S. addict 20:55, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Underground Olney?[]

Recently after roaming around the relatively small sewer area for almost an hour, I saw a ladder that seemed like it went up to the capital wasteland, but when I approached it it said "ladder to underground old olney (Requires Key)." Did anyone else find this ladder, and if you did wheres the key? 71.183.206.95 01:40, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

See the article above called Third exit from Sewers.

3rd exit/underground olney[]

nvm. its part of broken steel when you need to find a tesla coil at olney powerworks to power the tesla cannon

Yes! You're greeted by some Ghouls that made a HUGE mistake trying to find a new hangout like Underworld and found out it was infested with wayyyyyy too many Deathclaws. And there is a TON of Deathclaws when you go up/in there. It will lead you to the Old Olney S. Wilson Building where you'll fight a bunch of the Enclave as they drop their soldiers. It's a fun quest! --HeadphoneDisaster 01:20, 31 August 2009 (UTC)

Someone with the ability to unlock this page for editing please remove the second reference to Guns and Bullets (under Old Olney Sewers notable loot).

History[]

Alright, so now I am a bit confused as to why the town is infested with Deathclaws. I'm not entirely sure of a Deathclaw's existance, but the way I see it they are Jackson's Chameleons that were created by the military and planned on dropping them on China. Another theory is that they were just Jackson's Chameleons that just evolved through radiations and evolution. But why were there Jackson's Chameleons in the town to begin with? Did the town have a pet store? Was there a scientist who collected them in his basement? Or did they simply wander into the town and settle down?

The dead Mercenary[]

The dead Mercenary mentioned in the Bugs section had a Laser Pistol on him when I searched him, not a Laser Rifle. The weapon on the ground was a Laser Rifle, so I got one Laser Pistol and one Laser Rifle instead of the two Laser Rifles mentioned in the bug. PS3 version. --Bippo Ernesti 00:25, December 24, 2009 (UTC)

Bug needing confirmation[]

  • Sometimes when fast traveling to Old Olney, after traveling, your Pip-Boy will make a beep every 2 seconds. Reloading a previous save should fix this, but will occur again if you fast travel there again. It is yet to be tested if fast traveling to an area nearby Old Olney will prevent the bug, or if the bug only occurs if you travel from a certain point (in this case, the travel was from the front of the Museum of History to Old Olney).

Magic jumping deathclaw[]

Once when i was walking towards old olney with charo in my party after e shot a deathclaw it kept jumping in the air and went really, really high up and the only way i could see it was to use vats.wtf.

"Overrun" versus "taken over"[]

People are trying to change the wording at the beginning of the article to say that it was "taken over" by deathclaws instead of "overrun" by them. I'd like to have a discussion about it instead of an edit war.

I suppose that "overrun" might imply that the deathclaws had to overcome some kind of resistance from defenders, which may or may not be accurate. However, I also feel that "taken over" is inaccurate because to me it has the connotation that the deathclaws did it deliberately, but this strikes me as unlikely since the deathclaws in Fallout 3 are non-sentient as far as we know.

Is there a third wording that we can come up with that will make everyone happy? Maybe something like: "Old Olney is a run-down and derelict town in the Capital Wasteland, which is occupied by a significant number of deathclaws." --User:HunterZ(talk) 15:17, June 19, 2011 (UTC)

"Infested" is good, as written in a lower section.--Gothemasticator 15:38, June 19, 2011 (UTC)
I changed the first part to say "inhabited". Seems to work well. "Infested" can stay where it is too. --Kris User Hola 15:54, June 19, 2011 (UTC)
Looks good to me, thanks! --User:HunterZ(talk) 15:55, June 19, 2011 (UTC)
