major or minor faction?[]

is it possible to gain fame with the fiends? or get them to stop attacking you in anyway?

Nope. In fact, Motor-Runner is the only one who has any sort of dialogue with the Courier.- The Capulet 06:58, October 24, 2010 (UTC)

Gaining Entry?[]

I got the note to go kill Motor-Runner, showed up at the closed Vault 3 door and there is no way to get in. I don't know what the article is talking about with the "You can infiltrate the Vault by passing a speech check or by wearing Great Khans outfit and telling them that you're shipping Chems." -??? What speech check? There is no one there to speak to.

Try opening the door, like you do for every Vault door. --Kris User Hola 22:58, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
That was the first thing I tried - I get the message "This door is opened elsewhere". I wandered around the South Vegas Ruins and killed all the Fiends, and didn't find any way to open it. Perhaps I need a certain quest to get in.
I did some more web searching and found out that there's actually a console to the side of the door which opens it... I saw it before but assumed it was just decoration, like a million other consoles you see. Especially after playing for several hours straight, I'm not putting my pointer over every vanilla looking piece of art in the screen :P It's a bit ridiculous, but OK. I have updated the article to include this info.
Maybe make it a little more obvious in the article. I do not like looking things up and only do when Im really stumped. This one had me woozy from incomprehension till I read your note on this page. I just did not get how to open the door that is 'opened elsewhere' while all this time it was next to me and I thought it scenery.

--62.194.21.246 04:11, May 24, 2011 (UTC)

But for all the other vaults, you need to use the consoles in order to open them. The only time I didn't need to do so was when the vault door was already open. I will say this, Vault 3 is unique in that this is the first one I have come across where they didn't do the effect of the gigantic gear door opening and you walk into the entrance area. *design note* - Unlike other vaults, access to the vault 3 door is continuous with the wasteland. This means the vault interior would need to be loaded into memory along with the rest of the wasteland. Other vaults avoid this problem by placing a shack door prior to the vault entry tunnel and thereby creating a loading point.

184.60.20.232 11:47, October 31, 2010 (UTC)

That's simply not true:
  1. The vault door acts as a load door, much like the shack doors of other vaults, meaning the interior of the vault does not have to be loaded into memory as you approach.
  2. Vault 22 is the same way, except that you activate the broken doors rather than the console beside it.
  3. It makes more sense from a lore perspective to do it this way - there are clearly vaults with doors directly on the exterior rather than hidden in a cave or under an auto repair shop.
  4. Vault 87's door would not have been damaged had it not been on the surface. The presence of the shack door is incongruous.
  5. Most consoles of that type aren't simply decoration; they really do something, such as open a vault door or activate HELIOS One.

And I'm sure there's more points that I didn't think of. --Kris User Hola 03:47, December 1, 2010 (UTC)

Ranger[]

Now I've basically turned the recreational area upside down on the hunt for the Ranger, but he is nowhere to be found, he isn't on the location on the maps and stated in the article, any ideas? Is it another of the many bugs?

Me too, I went to the Living Quarters and turned right immediately. This lead me to a set of stairs which are booby trapped. Then I went through the loading door back to the Recreational Area. This put me right next to the entrance, and no sign of a Ranger. --Mikeh12 18:41, October 26, 2010 (UTC) Wait, just looked in the notes section. He goes back to McCarren if you kill Motor-Runner first --Mikeh12 18:44, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Vault purpose?[]

The article Vault lists Vault 3 as a control vault, while this article mentions "the purpose of this vault was to stay shut and never open." Which one is it?

Both, that's the idea of a control vault. It was supposed to stay closed and not have anything weird happen to it. Jpogue 06:16, October 28, 2010 (UTC)

Both are probably wrong, the terminals suggest that everyone in the vault is extremely nice/optimistic/ignorant, especially since they just welcomed the fiends with open arms when they were a clear threat. LK Tien 01:29, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

Control vaults opened after I think 20 years, though this might have been intended to be variable based on surface conditions. Vault 13 was an extended-isolation experiment, intended to stay closed 200 years, and Vault 101 was an indefinite isolation experiment, intended to never open at all. I think those in which the experiment didn't necessitate an altered timetable for opening, would all open after 20 years along with the control vaults. Vault 77 apparently opened after only a few years or so, much less than 20. --Kris User Hola 01:37, October 30, 2010 (UTC)

At what point is it stated that the Vault would never open? Regardless, the control vaults could still function as such even with variable opening times, I suppose. Are you sure about the 20 year figure? Whitecroc 11:24, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

Vault 101 was suposed to be closed forever. And where does all the iformation come from? All I have so far found in the Vault is mainly tripe about the overseer election. (I don't mean Vault 11 either.) I also think that the article contadicts itself as it says "The original Vault 3 inhabitants opened their doors to trade with people outside the vault. For a time, it went well and the inhabitants made a good living. However, this also brought the vault to the attention of the Fiends. The inhabitants hadn't set up any security, so the Fiends just stormed in and took over. It is not known if any of the original residents survived. The purpose of this Vault in the Vault Experiment was to stay shut and never open.", and then that they opened it and were immidiatly found by the Fiends. The Emporer 20:54, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

It seems to me that this Vault was set up to be completely independent - once it was closed, it was entirely under the control of the inhabitants. As a contrast, Vault 101 was entirely under the control of a dictatorial Overseer, which was part of the experiment of that Vault. The only reason Vault 3 opened was 1) they had a problem they couldn't solve and 2) they decided to seek help from outside. Had they not had that issue, it's likely they would have remain isolated - by choice - rather than deal with the outside world. They did also seem rather upbeat in the terminal entries. --Kris User Hola 03:52, December 1, 2010 (UTC)

Save Game Corruption in the Vault[]

I have encountered problems with my saves getting corrupted in this vault. Not all my saves, just the save games I created within this vault. I checked the web and others are having similar problems. To get around this, I would run out of the vault, save and go back in to continue exploring. Annoying? Yes, but it works. I'm playing on a PC.184.60.20.232 11:47, October 31, 2010 (UTC)

Hostile Fiends ?[]

I think I failed the speech check and left the vault fast enough. Then, when I was delivering a package from the Khans I was always attacked even though I wore a Khan outfit. Thought it was due to Boone, so I left him outside, that didn't help either. So I just equipped a Stealth Boy and sneaked to Motor Runner, talked to him to deliver the package and sneaked out again without any Fiend noticing.

Would there have been a way to avoid the Fiends becoming hostile ?

Ralph-Vault 3 possible connection?[]

Do any of you think Ralp at Mick and Ralph might have a connection to vault 3?Maybe he managed to survive the fiends and got out?Was just randomly browsing his store when i saw 3 vault 3 outfits in his invendory and started to think abot it.

Reply with any possible explanations that you can think of.Ragedaoneanlonely 15:36, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

I think it's more likely that Ralph just deals in vault memorabilia, like Sarah from vault 21. If Sarah is to be believed, vault suits are in high demand. --Foolish Ghoul 20:53, November 28, 2010 (UTC)

Motor Runner[]

Any reason why his throne is in the Engineering level? Wouldn't the Overseer's office be the more logical place? The Emporer 21:01, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

The overseer's office and living quarters are clean and haven't been ransacked, implying the fiends weren't able to open the door to get up there. -- TikiTantrum 02:08, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

Daniel[]

FNV Daniel

there is no page for this guy, and he's not mention for Vault 3 either... and I have no idea what he's supposed to be other than a regular fiend.

I found him way in the back of one of the wings of Vault 3. He shares a room with a woman (regular fiend). He is named, but follows the regular fiend dialogue. Wck604 13:36, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

If you kill him he has the key to the cell and the Maintenence Level on him. Useful if Ranger Anders doesn't spawn. The Emporer 18:00, November 11, 2010 (UTC)

Hostility[]

The whole vault is hostile to me! The fiends at the entrance are marked as hostile BUT they talk to me and don't attack. As soon as I leave the entrance a fiend with a flamer attacks me and then the others do so too. It's the third time I want to go into this vault. First time I successfully passed the speech check and explored the vault, Second time was the same, but this time they are all hostile.109.162.226.139 16:47, November 13, 2010 (UTC)

It's possible this happens if you enter Vault 3 while you're crouched. The same thing happened to me. After reloading a savegame outside the vault and trying again whilst standing up the Fiend right behind the door immediately initiated conversation. --Zeikzeil 18:06, June 13, 2011 (UTC)

Vault 3's GECK[]

If vault 3 is a control vault. Shouldn't they have their own GECK for re-building? Perhaps it was taken or destroyed by the fiends. But shouldn't there be at lease some kind reference to it?—Preceding comment was unsigned. Please sign your posts with ~~~~!

There's no indication that Vault 3 was a control vault. It may have been like Vault 13, extended isolation, or it may have had some other experiment. --Kris User Hola 17:45, November 16, 2010 (UTC)

What's with the flooding?[]

Every Vault I've been in (except Vault 21) has had the bottom levels of it flooded, but it ain't like this place is Louisiana (dig a hole there and it will fill with water), so why has almost every Vault in the Mojave had its bottom levels flooded? Any Ideas? - Texas Ranger 02:43, November 17, 2010 (UTC)

Well unless the residents planned on stop drinking they had to have some kind of water supply, and if they do its highly possible that a pipe have sprung leak(bad quality maybe). If youve played Fallout 1,then you also know that the Vault Dweller was sent out to find a new water chip,to save the vaults water supply.I hope this answers any questions.Ragedaoneanlonely 18:43, November 25, 2010 (UTC)

Speculation?[]

"The Fiends probably raided the Vault at most 20 years before the start of Fallout: New Vegas. This is supported by the fact that Motor-Runner was leading the Fiends when they overran it, and he can't be more than 35 to 40 years old."

This seems pretty speculative to me. The bit about Motor-Runner leading the attack on Vault 3 is substantive, but I don't think it matters much when exactly it happened, and players can work out a loose timetable on their own if they really want to.71.195.9.151 10:36, January 3, 2011 (UTC)

home?[]

if i kill all the fiends here? do they respawn? if not, does this mean i can finally have a vault home?

I wonder about that too. i killed ALL the fiends a day ago and they havent respawned, so they may not. also, sign your posts please... Robco Man 00:08, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

It's been months in-game from when I came through and wiped them out and their bodies are still laying around inside the vault. Too bad, I was hoping to capitalize on their misfortune again. User:Great_MaraUser talk:Great_Mara 04:22, June 27, 2011 (UTC)

I have a question along the previous question's line. If I wipe out the fiend population of Vault 3, will it stop the fiends on the outside from respawning? It's nice to constantly get the good karma from blasting their heads apart from long range. Or is the Vault 3/Fiends relationship similar to the NCRCF/Powder Gangers relationship where they do in fact respawn every few days even though the faction's base of operations has been destroyed? --99.34.133.173 22:22, May 10, 2012 (UTC)

Goodbye, reputation! (360)[]

I left Vault 3 and happened to check my reputation when leaving to check my Brotherhood status (I was finishing "Still in the Dark") when I noticed it did the exact same thing as the white glove society attire does - deletes all of my reputation for The Brotherhood, NCR, The Khans, Caesar's Legion, and the Powder Gangers with the nice bonus of making my idolized rank within the White Glove Society turn into Vilified. This may not be because of this exact Vault, as I hadn't checked after leaving Vaults 11 and 22.

Also, I left Vault 22 last.

Goodbye, Ed-E[]

I just finished the Aba Daba Honeymoon quest, having killed all the Fiends in the vault. I went back to Goodsprings, made a save, and upon the next load, was told that my save couldn't be loaded. I cleared my patch, re-downloaded it, and was able to access my game again. Only now, my active companion Ed-E is nowhere to be found. A check on the map puts him around Vault 3, along with a placed marker I don't remember creating. But he's not on the outside, and I've checked everywhere on the inside, nowhere to be found. The marker (the movable one) is placed in the middle of a wall in the submerged areas of vault 3. There is also a small triangle on my compass just outside the ramp leading to the vault entrance, can anyone fill me in on what that might mean? I tell you, that friggin robot drives me nuts. First I don't get the upgraded laser after finishing it's quest, now it's gone and taken the C-finder with it. If it weren't for the enhanced sensors perk, I would get Rex in a heartbeat. Anyone else lose a companion here? --76.85.171.65 06:57, April 28, 2011 (UTC)

Vault 15 sign?[]

Does anyone else have this My Vault 3 door has the number "15" written on it in verdana font in the center. Was it always like that or maybe one of my mods included that.

96.232.116.222 04:47, September 8, 2011 (UTC)

It was likely one of your mods, or I have never noticed it in the 10+ times I have gone there EBTalk 04:43, September 8, 2011 (UTC)

Weird. And when I point my mouse at it it says "Vault 15 Gear Door to Vault 3 Recreation Area"

Maybe its part of my mod New Vegas New California. Its a WIP mod that is trying to recreate many maps from the original fallouts. And somehow the door texture just ended up on the vault 3 door.

Freezing Bug[]

I have ran into a new bug concerning Vault 3. It occurs after I have reverse-pickpocketed Live Grenades onto Fiends in the Recreation Area, thus killing some of them.

Now, I cannot seem to load the Recreation Area of Vault 3 without the game freezing on me.

Vault 3 Location[]

If I am not mistaken, Vault 3 is located in the South Vegas Ruins. Before the war, this was a part of Las Vegas. Shouldn't the 'location' field say near New Vegas, or at least the Las Vegas Ruins?

Aside from that, why was one city given two vaults? Strange.

I made this note seven months ago. Why hasn't anyone bothered with this? Vault 3 is in Las Vegas.
