The .357 Magnum (9×33mmR) is a rimmed, straight cased cartridge originally introduced in 1934, as a development of the .38 Special ammunition. It has the same chambering diameter as the parent round, though it uses a different powder load for enhanced penetration and firepower. Though originally developed as a law enforcement round for use against early body armor and to penetrate light cover used by U.S. gangsters, its excellent stopping power and timeless design resulted in enduring popularity, well into the 21st century. The Big Chef brand of bullets was particularly popular among civilians and law enforcement alike. Packages of this ammunition are still common throughout the wastes.
hollow point bullets feature a hollowed out shape at the tip of the bullet. As such, the bullet expands upon impact, delivering more kinetic energy to the target and disrupting tissue more extensively. However, this same property also leads to dramatically reduced penetrative power, as the bullet will be stopped by the armor more easily.
.357 Magnum, JFP (hand load)
Jacketed flat point ammunition is designed to maximize the amount of damage transferred to the target by expanding, much like a hollow point round. Unlike that type of ammunition, however, the flat point bullet has a flat tip slowing down the expansion of the bullet. Hand loaded ammunition typically features higher powder loads as well, resulting in a round that boasts improved damage, ballistic performance, and performance against enemy armor.
The rimmed, centerfire cartridge the .357 Magnum was developed from. The .38 Special has the same chambering diameter, though it has a shorter case (metric designation 9×29mmR). This result in a smaller powder load and less damage, but the ammunition also puts less stress on the weapon, resulting in longer lifetime.
.357 Magnum (Junk)
The following is based on the JSawyer mod and has not been confirmed by canon sources.
Rounds crafted with the use of scrap metal, these offer lower ballistic performance and significantly stress the firearm, but are better than nothing.
