Background
The .38 is a rimmed, centerfire cartridge. Originally developed in the United States in the 1920s as a law enforcement round, the steel bullet was greatly effective against early body armor was able to penetrate light cover used by U.S. gangsters; its excellent stopping power and timeless design resulted in its enduring popularity.
Characteristics
Noted for its accuracy and manageable recoil, the .38 round was one of the most popular revolver cartridge in the world more than a century after its introduction. It was popularly used for target shooting, formal target competition, personal defense, and for hunting small game as well as being a common round for law enforcement. Its popularity has lead to it being the basis for the majority of homemade weapons in the wastelands around the Boston area.
