The advanced riot gear and the matching advanced riot gear helmet are pieces of armor in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Lonesome Road.

Background

The following section is transcluded from combat armor. To modify, please edit the source page.

Another advanced design fielded in limited quantities before the Great War, riot gear was a specialized model of combat armor used by the United States Marine Corps,[1] Army units in the American West,[2] and select law enforcement agencies, such as the Los Angeles Police Department.[3]

The most characteristic element of this model is the helmet. A rounded shell protects the head from incoming gunfire, while the lamps on the right side of the helmet (including infrared and visible light projectors) provide illumination.[4] The armored mask designed to be worn with the helmet is necessary to use the IR lamp, due to the low-light optics integrated into the lenses.[5][6] The mask also incorporates a locking mechanism to properly join it together with the helmet shell, ear covers with membranes that do not inhibit hearing while maintaining its protective qualities, and air filters. Some upgraded models also include communications gear and upgraded filtering apparatus.[7]

The torso assembly is a flexible vest of rigid impact plates, worn with adjustable straps on the sides and shoulders. One of its most notable additions is a prominent throat protector mounted on the vest, used by military operators to display tactical numbers[8] or the owner's identifying information, such as the name, rank, and blood group, allowing for easy casualty management.[9] Later models of riot gears may include heavier protection, including armored plating on shoulders and forearms. Military coats designed for use with the armor will also typically include some form of bullet-resistant reinforcement.[7]

The advanced riot gear, issued to the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, was distributed for crowd control and containment operations in Hopeville and Ashton before the Great War, rounding up protestors for shipping to black sites. After the war, they were repurposed for riot control duties by NCR units deployed to annex the Divide. All units were lost in the catastrophe that struck the region on the eve of the First Battle of Hoover Dam.

Leftover from these times is the helmet's tactical number, =100=, stenciled on the left side.

Characteristics

A significant upgrade from the regular riot gear, offering one more Damage Threshold point (21 vs. 20), lighter by five points (25 vs. 30), and more durable (600 vs. 500). It has a distinctly different bonus: Instead of +5 Guns and +1 Agility, it grants +10 Explosives and +1 Endurance.

Like the regular helmet, the helmet also grants a night vision mode, or Red Vision, which activates between 6 PM and 6 AM while in sneak mode and gives improved visibility at night. The helmet also gives a +2 Perception bonus at all times.

Locations

  • The Crow's Nest: Found on the body of an NCR riot control officer. Note that the officer will be jerked around by explosions, making it possible for the armor to be lost permanently if it falls off the highway.

Behind the scenes

  • The advanced riot gear has two unused files in the game's .bsa archives, denoted as nvdlc04riotgearadv_n.dds (normal map) and nvdlc04riotgearadv_g.dds (glow map), which depict an early variant of the riot gear. It has several cosmetic differences, including four rows of PALS strips on the abdomen, pockets on the duster and on its sleeves (painted-on, as opposed to added geometry), and a different texture for the wrist guards, apparently being used as a container. Most notably, the glow texture would result in several parts of the armor glowing (presumably white): The circle on the throat guard, stripes on the shoulder plates, and a set of additional stripes on areas not present in the finished model.
  • Playing caravan while the sneak sight is activated may make it difficult to see the cards.
