This is an official notice that the user page image policies stated in our Image and Video Policy will be excluded from the official guidelines. Namely, the section below will be completely erased:

  +

* Only 5 user page images are allowed per user. If you wish to free up "slots", you need to mark old images for deletion.
  +
* The file names of user page images have to start with "User" in order to avoid confusion with images for use in articles.
  +
* User page images violating any of these rules will be deleted without warning.}}

  +
The rationale for this decision is as follows:
This is a special Perk, so it cannot be taken at new levels like other Perks. It can be obtained only by consuming 100 bottles of the Alcohol-Z and have 2 Luck.

  +
* The limit of 5 UPIs was enacted when server space limitation was an issue, and this is no longer the case.
  +
* The naming convention for UPIs were designed to facilitate identification and search, but since categories already perform that task, this convention is redundant.
  +
* Most of the current UPIs are non-compliant to these regulations. The effort to enforce compliance would involve active search for them, forced deletion of UPIs from users with more than 5, and the renaming of literally thousands of images. That would be an obviously immense drudgery for essentially no gain.

  +
Please note, however, that administrators will still have the discretion to warn users who upload an unreasonable amount of pictures, specially of pictures unrelated to the wiki.

The reason this exclusion is bypassing the usual community consultation procedure is due to: the technical nature of the issue; it increasing, not decreasing, the general user's freedom; no major opposition to the changes themselves being expected from the community and the staff.

Here's my view on the proposal. If we strike the first rule, it means people can upload dozens of images and I'm not sure if you've thought about it, but I'm always the one doing the categorizing, so that means more tedious work which I'm not really waiting for. And the other way around, removing images from userpages, means another round for me with deleting the images. People are asked to categorize images themselves, but 9 out of 10 just don't do that. The blogpost Limmie just put up may help for a brief moment but not long term. I'm not against ramping it up a bit, 10 or so, if the admins help me out some more with this. That rule 2 and 3 be stricken I'm ok with, images don't necessarily need to start with user; most people aren't even aware they should name it as such. We still need a rule that admins should have the right to rename images though. I've come accross jpg files with 30 digits and admins need to be allowed to rename those. A bot can't tell them apart. Now you could say leave the userpage images for the bot to run through (I think I can recognize them) but we still have to split those into user page images and talkpage images (although it will be mostly user page). And if the list gets longer (every day the userpage images add up in the list), it will be harder to spot the new images that need manual categorizing. Not sure it will be worth the trouble setting a bot to work this. Jspoel 17:44, September 27, 2012 (UTC)

Revision as of 20:09, 28 September 2012

This is an official notice that the user page image policies stated in our Image and Video Policy will be excluded from the official guidelines. Namely, the section below will be completely erased:

User page images:
 • Only 5 user page images are allowed per user. If you wish to free up "slots", you need to mark old images for deletion.
 • The file names of user page images have to start with "User" in order to avoid confusion with images for use in articles.
 • User page images violating any of these rules will be deleted without warning.

The rationale for this decision is as follows:

 • The limit of 5 UPIs was enacted when server space limitation was an issue, and this is no longer the case.
 • The naming convention for UPIs were designed to facilitate identification and search, but since categories already perform that task, this convention is redundant.
 • Most of the current UPIs are non-compliant to these regulations. That would be an obviously immense drudgery for essentially no gain.

The decision was unanimously reached by the following staff attending the meeting:
