I am mortified by the cake mishap. Simply mortified.

Andy is a Mister Handy inside Vault 101 in Fallout 3.

Background[]

An old Mister Handy model with the British butler personality loaded, Andy has been at Vault 101 longer than anyone can remember, and his condition suffered accordingly. While under the close supervision of Stanley Armstrong, it is still a capable assistant,[Non-game 1] making even the most ambitious repairs possible, such as the water purifier that Stanley and Andy worked on, on the eve of the Lone Wanderer's 10th birthday (July 12, 2268).[1] Andy demonstrated the opposite end of his ability the very next day by attempting to cut the birthday cake, but ends up splattering the cake all over the cafeteria counter due to a spasm in its articulated blade - an issue that cannot be easily fixed due to a lack of spare parts. That same lack also gave Andy its nickname, "Mister Liability."[Non-game 2]

The years were not kind to Andy, but some systems fared better than others. The flamethrower was perfectly functional, and Andy developed a liking for burning radroaches with it, which proved important during James' escape from Vault 101. The flames saved Stanley,[2] but the intensity of the action put a substantial strain on Andy's systems, requiring in-depth maintenance from Armstrong.[3]

Thankfully, neither of them was a stranger to it. Andy and Stanley developed a rapport over the years, with Andy ribbing Stanley when he undertook repairs. It offset the stress of working on an antique, which was prone to random movements whenever a stabilizer was knocked loose (Andy blamed it on alleged cerebral palsy on Stanley's part),[4] and risk of cracking the casing (which Andy teased as incompetence, compared to the late George).[5] Andy also incessantly complained about the time needed for repairs,[6][7] verging on whinging about Stanley touching the wrong switches inside its casing,[8] before deciding that all of his repairs are pointless[9] indignities.[10]

Andy's deteriorating state has not stopped Overseer Alphonse Almodovar from appointing Andy as the Vault's new physician after James absconded and Jonas Palmer was murdered on Almodovar's orders. Its bedside manner was a common point of complaint, as were examinations performed with cold, metal pincers.[11] Andy was elated, of course.[12] The true limits of Andy's ability manifested during the rebellion against Almodovar: Andy considered a sprained toe suffered by Beatrice Armstrong a life-threatening injury and moved forward with a radical intervention and promptly removed her entire leg, using James' old desk as makeshift surgery. Beatrice bled out, splattering blood all over the office and Andy.[13]

As a result of this single casualty, once the situation stabilized, Andy was fired from its position, despite having fun during surgery, and retasked with cleaning the clinic up.[14]

Mr. Handy Cake Maker

In the Fallout 76 season Fight for Freedom, a Mr. Handy Cake Maker C.A.M.P. object was released which functions as a cooking stove. While it is not possible to have a conversation with it and it stays in the same spot, it will deliver various voice lines. It also bakes the same cake Andy does in Fallout 3 and has Vault Boy cookies.

  1. Amata Almodovar: "Thanks for coming, Stanley, I know you were busy with the water purifier. Everything's fine, I hope?"
Stanley Armstrong: "Oh, sure, nothing to worry about. Me and Andy got her all fixed up again last night, good as new."
Amata Almodovar: "I wasn't worried. You can fix anything, right? Anyway, I'm glad you could make it."
(Amata Almodovar and Stanley Armstrong's dialogue)
  2. Stanley Armstrong: "Me and Andy were in a tight spot there, ain't no mistake. Good thing he loves toasting roaches so much."
    (Stanley Armstrong's dialogue)
  3. The Lone Wanderer: "I've got to get going."
Stanley Armstrong: "Good luck. I need to take a look at poor Andy over here. His old gears just aren't up to this kind of excitement."
    (Stanley Armstrong's dialogue)
  4. Stanley Armstrong: "Just hold still. Your left stablizer's been knocked loose."
Andy: "I am holding still. It's your old, palsied hands that are shaking."
    (Andy and Stanley Armstrong's dialogue)
  5. Stanley Armstrong: "If you keep turning like that I'm going to crack your casing."
Andy: "Don't blame me for your incompetence. Why, I remember George used to have the lightest touch. Those were the days..."
    (Andy and Stanley Armstrong's dialogue)
  6. Stanley Armstrong: "I've almost got it."
Andy: "I don't believe you. I expect we'll be here for hours."
    (Andy and Stanley Armstrong's dialogue)
  7. Stanley Armstrong: "Ah, I think I've found the problem."
Andy: "Ouch! Do you have any idea what you're doing back there?"
    (Andy and Stanley Armstrong's dialogue)
  8. Stanley Armstrong: "Don't be such an old woman. Just a few more adjustments and you'll be as good as new."
Andy: "That is not the servo-motor switch. To the left... left, I said!"
    (Andy and Stanley Armstrong's dialogue)
  9. Stanley Armstrong: "Try it now. I think I've got it this time."
Andy: "I think you just made it worse. Should I do this myself?"
    (Andy and Stanley Armstrong's dialogue)
  10. Andy: "I think I'd rather just stay broken than submit to any further indignity."
    (Andy's dialogue)
  11. The Lone Wanderer: "What happened that night?"
Amata Almodovar: "The real problems came after you two left. The injured had nobody to turn to, since our doctor had run off, and his assistant had died. Now we've got to rely on that old Mr. Handy for most of our medical needs. And he hasn't exactly got the best bedside manner. Ever had an examination from someone with cold, metal pincers? You don't want to!"
    (Amata Almodovar's dialogue)
  12. The Lone Wanderer: "Wait... they made you the doctor?"
Andy: "But of course! With your father's departure from the vault, and Jonas's untimely demise, the Overseer had to take swift action! And so he named me the new vault medical practitioner! A marvelous decision, if I do say so myself! I am fully equipped, after all."
    (Andy's dialogue)
  13. The Lone Wanderer: "Andy, what happened? All this blood..."
Andy: "Ah, yes. A rather unfortunate incident. In all the commotion, Miss Beatrice suffered from a rather bad sprain in her left toe. The big one. Obviously, I had no choice but to amputate. The leg. I'm sorry to say the operation was not a success."
    (Andy's dialogue)
  14. The Lone Wanderer: "If you're the new doctor, can you heal me?"
Andy: "Um, actually... no. I'm afraid I've been... What's the human term? Ah yes. 'Fired.' I've been reassigned to cleaning detail. My first duty is, somewhat ironically, cleaning the clinic! Ah, but surgery was fun while it lasted..."
    (Andy's dialogue)

  1. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.98:
    "Stanley Armstrong:
Sweet, always worried, and not very bright, Stanley is the father of Beatrice, Mary, and Gloria. Stanley and Andy are responsible for keeping the Vault running. They tend all the machinery and act as janitors."
  2. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.60: "Andy
Under constant supervision from Stanley Armstrong, Andy is a Mister Handy robot, although a more apt title would be 'Mister Liability.' Due to a lack of specific motor parts, Andy is prone to articulated blade spasms, which have already claimed a cake."
