Aqua Pura is the purified water that is available with the Broken Steel add-on once the quest Take it Back! is completed. This water is from the Potomac River basin and has been completely cleansed of its radioactivity and contaminants by the purifier at the Jefferson Memorial.

Characteristics[]

Uninfected Aqua Pura[]

If the water is not infected with the modified FEV, then Aqua Pura is just normal, filtered water that restores 20 Hit Points; identical to purified water.

Infected Aqua Pura[]

If the water is infected with the modified FEV, it will poison the player and anyone else who drinks it. While it will still restore 20 Hit Points, infected Aqua Pura has a debuff that is not initially listed in its effects. The first time that the player consumes given amounts of Aqua Pura, the debuffs effects will be added.

Drinking infected Aqua Pura will display a message stating that "Continued consumption of FEV-laced water will be fatal." and give the Aqua Pura debuff. The first bottle of Aqua Pura will lower Strength by 1. The second bottle of Aqua Pura will increase the Strength debuff to -2. The third bottle will reduce Intelligence by 1 in addition to the Strength debuff.

Drinking four bottles in total of infected Aqua Pura will kill the player. The game keeps track of how many bottles of Aqua Pura have been consumed, and even if the debuff has worn off and multiple in-game days have passed, drinking a fourth bottle of Aqua Pura will kill the player instantly.

Locations[]

The yellow barrels of Aqua Pura can be found across the Capital Wasteland. Scavengers with pack brahmin carrying barrels can be seen making deliveries on merchant routes, protected by Brotherhood of Steel knights and paladins. Stolen barrels can be found in the possession of raiders, Talon Company mercs, Enclave troops, super mutants, and slavers.

However, these barrels cannot be interacted with. Aqua Pura crates, wooden boxes containing roughly 10 bottles of Aqua Pura each, can be looted for their contents. These crates are found at:

  • The Citadel - throughout all of the occupied sections of the Citadel, including the courtyard.
  • Rivet City - crates can be found in the water caravan checkpoint outside the city.
  • Jefferson Memorial - crates can be found at the water caravan checkpoint outside the memorial.
  • East of Evergreen Mills - three empty crates can be found at the entrance to the canyon leading into Evergreen Mills. Interacting with these crates triggers a raider ambush.

Loose bottles of Aqua Pura can be found in the following locations:

  • In abundance within the Citadel, with at least five bottles per room, or in crates, for roughly 151 in total.
  • 17 bottles can be found in the Holy Light Monastery.

Notes[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • Aqua pura is Latin for "pure water."
  • Aqua Pura is one of the largest purified water brands in the real world.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Giving any amount of Aqua Pura to water beggars will result in their death at the next map change, regardless of whether or not the Aqua Pura contains modified FEV.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Sometimes, after drinking Aqua Pura, a message will appear saying that "Aqua Pura has worn off." This is like when a chem wears off but there were no effects to begin with. This message may appear at random times, days after drinking Aqua Pura. It's not really a bug but a scripting quirk. Because tainted Aqua Pura has a debuff effect, it's treated like a chem. The taint effect is still applied to the player, but since the effect fails a condition check, the actual debuff and player's death chance aren't applied. The pure Aqua Pura is thus also treated as a chem though it has no ill effects; the result being the "worn off" messages.[verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Non-player characters use this as an aid item during firefights. It has the same effects on them if there is modified FEV added to the water. However, non-player characters drinking it will trigger the script that attributes the negative effect to you. In essence, if non-player characters drink a lot of infected Aqua Puras, the script kills the player character instead of the NPC.[verified]

  1. The Lone Wanderer: "How do you make your "holy water"?"
Curie III: "It was a gift from Atom. I was meditating right here in Springvale, when four of His armored angels came to me. When I said I was from Megaton, they gave me barrels of "Aqua Pura," and said I should share it with my people. They were very clear on that. But when I shared some with my Enlightened brethren, it made them terribly ill. I questioned why Atom had brought a pestilence upon us. That's when I thought to consecrate it with Atom's Light. And lo and behold, it removed the pestilence and made the finest holy water imaginable!"
(Curie III's dialogue) Note: This is the response given should the player have completed the quest Project Impurity by infecting the water supply with modified FEV.

  1. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide p.577: "The Brotherhood has a zero tolerance policy against Ghouls receiving Aqua Pura. So Griffon made a deal, and swindled his brethren for a few Caps."
