I'd watch that kind of talk if I were you. It is NOT slavery. We take care of these refugees, and they have a good life... better than they would get in the wastes.

Barkus is the stern, bureaucratic administrator of the Servant Allocation Center in Vault City in 2241.

Background[]

A stern official holding the post of Vault City Servant Coordinator,[1] Barkus manages slavery in Vault City, including acquisition, assignment, and processing. Any purchases are immediately taken into custody (with tranquilizer darts, if necessary), to serve the interests of the city. Despite insistence on newspeak and acting indignant at any mention of slavery, Barkus is quite corrupt and willing to accept bribes to spare someone the fate of a Vault City slave.

Slaver
This character buys slaves.

Will purchase companions, in the following order and at the following prices:

Prices are doubled by a successful Barter check. Companion equipment is moved to the footlocker in the next room.

Quests[]

  • Rescue Amanda's husband, Joshua: As with many post-War officials, Barkus is corrupt. A hefty bribe allows the Chosen One to ask anything servant-related and have it done swiftly. That is one of the ways in which Joshua can be set free.

Other interactions[]

  • Since he manages slaves, the player can sell their companions to him. Alternatively, if the Chosen One has less than 4 Intelligence, then they can "talk" to Barkus or Skeev, and wind up placed in Vault 8 on cleaning detail as a newly minted servant. They can simply walk out of there, giving an easy way to bypass the citizenship requirement. Higher Intelligence characters can use Psycho to dumb themselves down.

Vault City jumpsuit $342

Appearances[]

Barkus appears only in Fallout 2.

Behind the scenes[]

  • When asking about servants, there is an easter egg dialogue chain only accessible with an Intelligence and Perception of 9 that mentions a scripter named Dan and compares him to the servants in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
  • Barkus will not buy Marcus, Myron or Cassidy (planned, but did not get implemented).
