Although carrying the same name as the venerable beverage from before the Great War, this "black coffee" is actually made from the leaves of wild tobacco and pods harvested from the honey mesquite tree. The extracted nicotine, made palatable by the addition of the honey mesquite pods, creates a powerful, stimulating tea that reduces drowsiness and temporarily improves concentration. Of course, nicotine has drawbacks: It slightly decreases motor coordination. Thankfully, the drink is not addictive.
Though the base statistics for black coffee might seem underwhelming, all scale with the Survival skill, allowing a master survivalist to gain a +6 bonus to Intelligence for 60 seconds, one of the highest available bonuses, three times as effective as Mentats. It also provides immediate healing, even in Hardcore mode.
Furthermore, black coffee is one of the few items that reduce the need to sleep in hardcore mode. Until the player reaches Survival 30, it's weaker than coyote tobacco chew in that aspect, but quickly becomes the preferable option once past that threshold.
A further bonus is that the drink itself is non-addictive.
