Isn't that weird? It stronly resembles to the M16 A4 machine gun wich was introduced after WW2, how could it be in the fallout universe?87.211.193.250 17:09, February 7, 2010 (UTC)

It looks more like the M16A1, designed in 1957 therefore keeping to 50's area, the M16A4 is relativly new. - RASICTalk 22:16, February 7, 2010 (UTC)

It has the funky handle of the A1, but the stock of the M4. Nitty Tok. 22:18, February 7, 2010 (UTC)

True, possibly a difference given to gun to stop it looking so 'real-world copied', but of course that is just speculation right now. - RASICTalk 22:20, February 7, 2010 (UTC)
As of now, this thing looks like a piece of shit weapon. I want my Chinese Assault Rifle. Nitty Tok. 22:26, February 7, 2010 (UTC)

Telescoping stock? Really? That's just... so 1960's.

1960's is pretty advanded for a society timelocked in the 1950's. Kahlzun 22:17, March 15, 2010 (UTC)

Try searching for an image of the CAR-15 *Also known as the AR-15, And in some Cases the XM-177* While technically they are all entirley different weapons

  • The M-16/4 Series is a further development of the AR-15*

The weapon in Fallout NV is most likley to be a CAR-15, Why? because of the short stock, overall small frame, and *Important* A Non removable carrying handle. Most AR-15s, M4s, XM177s and M16s *With the exception of the M16A1 and A2* Have removable carrying handles with picatinny rails. The CAR-15 Was a Vietnam era Carbine that was issued in small numbers.

Exactly what I thought, this more resembles the Colt Commando (CAR-15) than an M4 or any of the M16 series of assault rifle.--KieranBOS 12:14, February 16, 2010 (UTC)

As you can see, the Colt Commando looks exactly the same as the Military Assault Rifle, alot more than an M4.--KieranBOS 11:52, February 17, 2010 (UTC)

Perhaps this is the M199, the standard issue in the US Armed forces. Its looks like an M series weapon, so it perhaps could be it, I could be wrong though.

I think people need to keep in mind that Fallout games until 3 (and somewhat even in 3 appearance wise) had various weapons from real-life. Obsidian might to some extent be going back to the old games, while still trying to keep balance with what Bethesda did with 3. VonVince 16:33, April 9, 2010 (UTC)

Still doesn't make sense. Soon, the Fallout series will have hardly any viable continuity tech-wise. This gun looks too modern. I'm pretty sure alot of the guns in Fallout don't follow the timeline, but Fallout 3 did the best job in making all the tech believable, in my opinion. New Vegas is gonna be wierd.. XXHunterKillerXx 19:30, April 25, 2010 (UTC)

Deal with it. And it definately looks modeled after the A3, or, more likely, A2, which, yes, is odd, because in modern times the SCAR series is replacing the M16 series, but hey, I always prefered the M16 over the SCAR.--With care and happiness, Supermutantslayer450' ROAR 01:20, May 1, 2010 (UTC)

Made out of black plastic?!?!?

The only thing that is plastic on even the old M16 series rifles are the foregrip and stock. This thing has a telescoping stock so it has even less plastic in it. it's metal, not plastic.

But according to US troops in Vietnam, the M16 might as well have been manufactured by Mattel alongside Barbie dolls. The plastic part is meant to be a little derogatory, but metal would have long since rusted. Nitty Tok. 23:10, May 10, 2010 (UTC)
Those M16 rifles have too many parts in the firing system itself, which means that it is very much prone to jamming and is a pain in the ass to take apart and clear when your being shot at. - Texas Ranger 12:08, August 14, 2010 (UTC)
Seriously, it jams enough already, and they're giving it a straight mag?! On the subject of plastic, though, it's pretty common to use as rifle parts, since it is stronger than wood but lighter than metal. Even the newer model AKs replaced the wooden stock with plastic EDIT: Oh yeah, on the M16, in addition to the foregrip and stock, the handguards and pistol grip are also plastic. RadRuler 04:34, August 27, 2010 (UTC)
In a world where oil is essentially all used up, plastic - a petroleum product - would be more expensive than platinum. Whatever the real-world ones are made of, there's no plastic in the Fallout universe weapons. --Kris User Hola 10:26, October 11, 2010 (UTC)
? What are you saying? That you know, exactly, what they are made of in this universe? And besides, these weapons were made decades before the resource wars started, so they could still be plastic. RadRuler 10:44, October 11, 2010 (UTC)

Ok, just to clear things up. The AR15 is made mostly out of anodized aluminum. The lower receiver (provides housing for the trigger group and attachment point for the stock) is typically made from 6065 while the upper receiver (the part where all the work gets done) is usually made from a harder 7075 aluminum. Although on some examples like a DPMS firearm the upper receiver is made from a thick extruded 6065 aluminum. The bolt group (bolt, carrier, extractor, ejector) and barrel are almost always steel. Again often with a antifriction or rust preventative coating applied. Yes the foregrip is sometimes plastic. Although these are now being replaced quite frequently with anodized 6065 aluminum rail systems (to accommodate accessories light flashlights, vertical foregrips, Red, Green, IR lasers etc.

Uncoated aluminum does not oxidize at nearly the same rate as steel. After it has been anodized, the layer of anodized aluminum would have to be worn through first (anodizing is often quite thick and tough) and the aluminum would have to be exposed for some time before it would begin to oxidize. Again steel as well would need to have the surface treatment worn off before rust could take hold. Note that due to it's high melting point the surface treatments that can applied steel are often much toughener than type 2 or type 3 hard anodizing. Some of the better surface coatings are tough enough to be used for applications such as drill bits or internal combustion pistons.

As far as moving parts go, there is a certain bare minimum amount of parts a semi automatic rifle needs to function. It's not as if manufacturers are out there going "What do you think? You're right, not complicated enough. Let's add a few extraneous parts." The only way I can see to cut down on parts would be to move from a mechanical to a fixed ejector. Most of the time these firearms have a gas piston rather than direct impingement, so you'd actually be adding parts. Rhomb 04:28, November 18, 2010 (UTC)

Actual Name

This weapon is actually called the 'Assault Carbine'. Source here: http://uk.xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/14341976/fallout-new-vegas/videos/falloutnv_vdp_060310_v3.html;jsessionid=7js7uk6u0nj7c

Please change the description!

Why is this page locked from alterations when the information is wrong? The design of the Assault Carbine is clearly based on the AR-15/CAR (Colt Commando) model of the M16 series, and NOT the M16A1! More specifically, it looks most like the Colt Model 733 with a 20 round magazine. These carbine models are police force/civilian varients, rather than the M/XM military designations. For starters, the M16 is an assault rifle, and has the characteristically long barrel, compared to the shorter, compact barrels featured on all carbine varients (even the military designated M4 models). Come on guys! Lets get this information changed! Ultimagameboy 20:21, June 11, 2010 (UTC)

Um, yea, because nobody has been arguing this for the past two months with the same information. W/e, I agree with you anyway, and also, this also technically makes this an SMG, so I'll just go fix that, at last, the CAR is an smg, right? Deus Gladiorum 02:07, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Nvm, though designated an smg by colt because of its length and weight, it was actually a carbine by definition because it used rifle ammunition. Anyway, thats why its an assault carbine in this game. Still should be renamed, but I wouldn't make a huge deal about it, ok? Deus Gladiorum 02:48, June 15, 2010 (UTC)

Sounds like some people have never heard of Fallout 2. New Vegas takes place in 2280, not 1950. Fallout uses a 1950's style, but it also has plasma and laser weapons, etc. 06:36, July 9, 2010 (UTC)

It is not an M4A1. It looks more like a FAL. Tezzla blah blah blah 15:20, July 25, 2010 (UTC)

It's a Colt Commando. Do you even know what an FAL looks like? Nitty Tok. 15:21, July 25, 2010 (UTC)

Yes i use it a lot on MW2. Tezzla blah blah blah 15:54, July 25, 2010 (UTC)

Hahaha, that's the funniest thing I've heard all day Tezzla.... Firstly, the "FAL" in MW2 is a custom built rifle, known as a DSA-58OSW, it's based on the FAL, but no one refers to it as such. Secondly the only thing those two guns have in common is they're both black and the magazines are straight.99.65.211.227 12:10, August 3, 2010 (UTC)

It's an old Colt Model 773, which is a Colt Automatic Rifle with an M16A1 flash-hider attached. and please stop thinking that just because you've played Modern Warfare 2, you know what a gun is. - Texas Ranger 04:20, August 12, 2010 (UTC)

This is definitely NOT a SMG or rifle. It's a carbine because of the length of the barrel. And you can't say "Oh, the only reason it's not an SMG is because of the ammo" because an SMG wouldn't be designed this way. 9mm ammo will only go so far no matter how long the barrel is, which is why SMGs typically have a barrel of less than 4 inches. And it's too short to be a rifle, for that classification it would have to be at least two feet (the barrel, not the whole weapon).

Colt Model 733 Carbine - 5.56mm NATO

A carbine is a rifle build with a shorter barrel than a rifle. Carbines are mainly designed for CQB (Close quarters battle), for which a rifle would by impractical. Secondly, a Colt Automatic Rifle (or C.A.R.) is available in serveral barrel lengths. But it is still a Colt Model 773 because it clearly has an M16A1 flash hider instead of the extended Vietnam-era CAR-15 flash hider. - Texas Ranger 12:04, August 14, 2010 (UTC)

It is clearly based on the CAR-15 carbine (pictured above, not the 773). The CAR-15 is not to be confused with the M4, which has a different stock and magazine type (at least). The14th 08:11, October 21, 2010 (UTC)

Canon name

There's a lot of discussion here about what real-world weapon it looks like, but does anyone think that canonically speaking this could be the M199 'Backtalker' mentioned but not displayed in the Museum of Technology? FinalWish 02:13, August 19, 2010 (UTC)

Go and look at the concrete club picture. It shows someone shooting what appears to be this weapon. The weapon has an extended magazine, so we know that's a mod, and what looks to me like a different forend. But that is questionable.

I was about to post something about that, I noticed that aswell. A longer Magazine resembling a real world STANAG, the ones seen on M4's, AR-15's etc. I also noticed the different foregrip

anyone got gameplay videos with this rifle? YuriKaslov-M1911 small Yuri Kaslov 17:21, September 19, 2010 (UTC)

Ammo

The Assault Carbine fires 5mm. http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1117466-weapons-mods-and-ammo-mega-thread-4/page__view__findpost__p__16426770--Resplendant Securitron 01:11, September 27, 2010 (UTC)

It was Sawyer. Entry #16426770 The Jovar 01:13, September 27, 2010 (UTC)
Oh derp, it's above the quote. Who does that? Makes it harder to read... Nitty Tok. 01:15, September 27, 2010 (UTC)

Why did they do this? It is supposed to fire 5.56/.223 ammo. Are they just abandoning the pretext of realism now? RadRuler 10:04, October 11, 2010 (UTC)

I hope you're kidding. This is a game that features mutants and 200-year old radiation zombies. People always obsess over which gun the in-game ones look like. This isn't America's Army, military experts didn't create this game. Plus the war happens in an alternate reality 63 years in the future, so don't obsess over finding real world guns. WTH is with the selective realism-obsession people!? FinalWish 03:49, October 18, 2010 (UTC)
Any person can clearly see it uses the same magazine as the Service Rifle and it bears some resemblance to it (not going to re-start the debate), also, the 5mm is only used by the Minigun, it makes no sudden sense that a belt-fed ammo is suddenly used in a compact carbine. My guess is that they wanted to differenciate it from other rifles and to have some use for other ammo, but this doesn't make much sense mechanically. Xarex 19:12, October 19, 2010 (UTC)
It doesn't have to be belt fed, which it isn't. You can take the rounds out of the links and put them in the magazine.--Mute Poet 15:20, October 26, 2010 (UTC)

Base ID for the Assault Carbine...

Hey,

Just thought I would post the BaseID for the weapon. The BaseID is: 0008F21E. I have checke this ID and ensured that it is playable both with companions and the player character. Someone update the page? Hope this helps.

Umm its not an m16 its name is CAR 15 Commando

This weapon is a beast for close encounters, a beast! :D If you favor your weapons skill and like rapid firing guns, this one is for you until you have the chance to use the LMG or the Minigun (her strengh requirement is pretty low). Just keep some handy WRK available and you'll be fine. Brfritos 17:18, November 23, 2010 (UTC)

It is attainable, albeit though some bugs and exploits. It was never meant for the player to use it in the game. Kastera (talk) 16:04, June 3, 2011 (UTC)

Suggest mentioning that it (appears to be) based on something AR18-derived -- probably M4, poss. M16. 118.209.103.216 13:02, August 21, 2011 (UTC)

Regular Assault Carbine vs GRA Assault Carbine

Not sure if it should be added to either of the pages, but here is the differences: Regular: Benefits from Grunt (+25% damage). GRA: Can be modded for +20% Rate of Fire and +33% Condition. Conclusion: Regular Assault Carbine is better in terms of DAM, while the GRA version has faster rate of fire and will last longer before breaking.

The gun is based on the GUU-5P. One of the few small arms the air forced adopted first. Makes sence seeing how nelis afb is in the game

If you can find any proof of that, you're welcome to add it to the page along with a citation. -ΣΔLet's talk! 23:54, March 4, 2012 (UTC)
Unless you can get a direct quote from one of the developers like JE Sawyer or Chris Avellone, it's speculation.--Kingclyde 00:13, March 5, 2012 (UTC)

I can't get a quote, although if I or someone else asks Chris Avalone on his site I'm might say the devs were inspired by it. The GUU-5P is a carbine using the original M16 Upper receiver (the one with a fixed carrying handle) and a early collapsible buttstock and a Auto setting as apposed to the M4's Burst setting, Also the AF does not put rails on it and use the older handguards. The Air Force is the only user of this weapon as the sister services use the M4A1.

I'm in the Air Force and can scan some photos if you would like of a GUU-5P if you like for comparison.
