Bottle caps are one of the standard currencies in Fallout: New Vegas.

Characteristics[]

The bottle cap is the main currency used in the Mojave Wasteland when dealing with NPCs. In addition to being found loose, bottle caps can also be acquired from drinking Nuka-Cola or Sunset Sarsaparilla.

Variants[]

  • Sunset Sarsaparilla bottle caps - These are the caps off of bottles of Sunset Sarsaparilla. In terms of gameplay, these caps are considered a separate item from the original. However, picking up a Sunset Sarsaparilla cap simply adds to the player character's total bottle cap count. These caps can be found across the Mojave Wasteland and can also be obtained by drinking bottles of Sunset Sarsaparilla.
  • Counterfeit bottle caps - These caps can be found inside the cap counterfeiting shack. These "fake caps" appear identical to standard Nuka-Cola bottle caps, but have no trade value and cannot be used for any monetary purpose.
  • Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle caps - A rare variant of the Sunset Sarsaparilla bottle cap, featuring a blue star on the underside of the cap. These caps are part of the quest The Legend of the Star and thus cannot be sold. Once the quest is completed, picking up a Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle cap will simply add it to the overall bottle cap total.

Locations[]

Found commonly throughout the Mojave Wasteland, including:

Notes[]

  • The cap counter on the Pip-Boy only goes up to 999,999. Once this number has been exceeded, it will display 1,000,000+ caps.
  • The world model of the Sunset Sarsaparilla bottle cap displays a value of "--" but will still increase the bottle cap count by one when picked up.
  • Old World Blues (add-on) When Doctor Mobius was developing the Sink Central Intelligence Unit in Big MT, according to Doctor 0, he included a line of code allowing the use of bottle caps as currency within the bartering function as a means to debug the system, though Doctor Dala attests that Mobius did so because he had accurately predicted their future value in the post-War wasteland.[1]
  • Lonesome Road (add-on) The commissary terminals utilized by the military garrisons in Hopeville and Ashton were intended to exclusively use a military pay chit, but it was soon discovered that these chits were the exact size and shape of ordinary bottle caps, forcing an immediate lockdown to prevent abuse of the system.[2]

  1. Doctor 0: "*I don't know... might be some old Nuka Cola or Sunset Sarsaparilla bottlecaps lying around. It... It's not 'currency' per se...* *Still, might be enough to trick the Sink's trade routines. Mobius put that test line for caps in the code as a debug command, I think.*"
Doctor Dala: "I don't believe that was Mobius' reason. His wild speculation concerning post-holocaust economic systems was quite extensive. And of high decibel."
