Bright followers, also named dead ghouls in-game, are members, alive and deceased, of the Bright Brotherhood in the Mojave Wasteland in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

Having lived since before the Great War, Jason Bright saw his transformation into a glowing one as a sign from "the creator" and declared himself a "prophet". He gathered several other ghouls into forming his Bright Brotherhood, where he preaches to his flock about undertaking a "Great Journey" to a "Far Beyond" where ghouls can find peace and healing, away from the harsh living of the wasteland and the anti-ghoul bigotry rife among its human inhabitants. The Bright followers are Jason's devout acolytes, who firmly believe in his promises of orchestrating their passage into the Far Beyond.[1][2]

By 2281, following an alleged vision from "the creator", the Bright Brotherhood ventured to the REPCONN test site to commandeer the array of REPCONN Aerospace rockets to take them on the Great Journey as prophesized by Jason. However, some time after their arrival, a horde of "demons" invaded the test site as well, and many followers were killed while the survivors were forced to sequester themselves in the upper levels of the building where the "demons" could not reach them.[3] Despite this setback, the Brotherhood's faith in Jason's mission did not waver, and they remained dedicated to his every word.[4][5]

At some point prior to the Brotherhood's term at REPCONN, several followers met deadly ends in various locations in the southern reaches of the Mojave, their bodies left where they fell along with the energy weapons they carried.

Appearances[]

Bright followers appear only in Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the scenes[]

The presence of the Bright follower corpses in the southern half of the Mojave populated with low-level enemies was an intentional decision by Joshua Sawyer to provide plausible explanation for the availability of energy weapons in the early game, since according to him, the Bright followers are "nutty."[Non-game 1]

  1. The Courier: "What's the "Great Journey"?"
Jason Bright: "We wish to escape the barbarity of the wasteland, especially the violence and bigotry of its human inhabitants. The creator has promised to my flock a new land: a place of safety and healing... a paradise in the Far Beyond. Preparations for the Great Journey were nearly complete when the demons appeared."
    (Jason Bright's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "Who are you?"
Jason Bright: "I am Jason Bright, the prophet of the Great Journey. All the ghouls you see here are members of my flock."
    (Jason Bright's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "Tell me more about these "demons.""
Jason Bright: "The demons appeared from nowhere... except it might be more accurate to say they never actually "appeared" at all. The demons are invisible. Where one of them stands, the most one sees is the air shimmering, like sunlight on water... They set upon us as we were on our way to worship one morning. We had just entered the basement. My flock fought bravely, and killed a few, but at such cost. Nearly half of us died or went missing. The rest of us retreated up here. One of the demons raved at us, but they have not tried to attack us since. Still, their demonic presence brought all progress towards the Great Journey to a standstill. But now you have come. Once again, the creator has sent a human to help us across a seemingly insurmountable obstacle."
    (Jason Bright's dialogue)
  4. Bright follower: "Jason will deliver us from the pain of this world!"
    (Bright followers' dialogue)
  5. Bright follower: "Sorry, we don't talk to outsiders. Talk to Jason if you have business here."

  1. Fallout: New Vegas 10th Anniversary Charity Stream (reference starts at 3:46:27)
Joshua Sawyer: "'Why is there a Bright follower in this cave?' I think it was to give more, um... so the idea we had is that the Bright followers are kinda nutty, and we kinda just... or, I distributed them throughout the wasteland to give a little more availability of energy weapons early in the game. Plausibly."
