The motion sensor is a usable item in Fallout and Fallout 2 that detects the movement of biological material over a distance of meters using a tuned radar device. This device snaps into the Pip-Boy.

Background[]

The Wattz Electronics C-U model motion sensor is a computer auxiliary that detects the movement of biological material over a distance of meters using a tuned radar device.[1] The motion sensor can be used in conjunction with the Pip-Boy 2000 AutoMap feature, and will display all living and moving beings on the map - represented as red dots.[2][Non-game 1] The C-U model is only compatible with the Pip-Boy 2000 or earlier models; the Pip-Boys Vault City is equipped with are too advanced to use this auxiliary.[2]

Characteristics[]

When used - either from the active item slot or from inventory - the motion sensor will automatically call up the automap and display all entities on the map (or critters, in technical terms used by the engine) as red dots on the map. The motion sensor can therefore be useful for scouting ahead, as it will display entities regardless of view distance or obstacles, but otherwise is of limited use.

In Fallout 2, however, having a motion sensor in the inventory provides a +20% bonus to the Outdoorsman skill when traveling on the world map. The +20% bonus is applied to the party member with the highest Outdoorsman skill. A motion sensor does nothing in the inventory of a companion.

The Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel 2 version would have appeared as a simple device, it "hooks up" with the player character's Pip-Boy allowing them to know where their enemies are.[Non-canon 1]
