Brother Moncrief was a member of the Cult of the Mothman. His voice can be heard on a recording during Event: The Path to Enlightenment.
Background[]
Brother Moncrief was a cultist who vocally theorized about some sort of "physical light of the Mothman."[1]
He wrote a note to the High Priestess of his cult while taking shelter at Landview Lighthouse. There, he observed fireflies while they were mating and collected their bioluminescent fluid to light the lamp, hoping to summon the Mothman.[2]
After calling in vain to nearby cultists for aid in a ritual to summon the wise and beneficent Mothman,[3] Moncrief decided to perform the ritual by himself. While gathering their bioluminescent fluid, aggressive fireflies attacked the cultist, inflicting fatal wounds which forced him to abandon his quest.[4]
His skeleton can be found lying on a sleeping bag on the top floor of the lighthouse.
He is remembered positively by Steven Scarberry,[1] so he was probably a member of the Followers of the Winged One sect.

- Whenever Vault Dwellers lit the lighthouse beginning in 2102, the Wise Mothman would visit them.
- The larger sect, the Followers of the Winged One, hold the Wise One to be an agent of false prophecy.[6] Their beliefs were shaped in the post-War period by a figure known as the First Priestess of the Wood.[7] They have been hostile to the Wise Mothman since returning to the region in 2103.
- The opposing sect, the Enlightened, revere only the Wise Mothman, which they believe to be an individual mortal being with profound metaphysical capabilities. However, they are not known to have a High Priestess, or anything of the sort. They posture in opposition to religious behavior, and style themselves with secular titles such as Observer and Interpreter.
- The event itself is called "The Path to Enlightenment," possibly alluding to the Enlightened, who were not revealed until the Night of the Moth update.
