Buffout is a brand of highly advanced steroids that increase strength, reflexes, and endurance. Although highly addictive,[1] it was a popular choice among pre-War athletes.[2] Their clandestine - and illicit - use of the drug made its use by amateurs popular and widespread.[3][4] With it, they could run longer and work out harder without the burden of "unnecessary" training.[5] The popularity of the drug resulted in a number of hybridized variants, including Bufftats (mixed with Mentats) and Psychobuff (military modification, combined with Psycho).[6]

Its popularity persists well after the nuclear holocaust, due to its properties. The increase in strength allows a wastelander to punch through several wooden boards with ease and pummel opponents into submission.[7] As such, it's typically banned in places like Vault City[8] or entertainment venues. For example, casino and bar patrons in New Reno were banned from indulging in Buffout, likely to limit altercations.[9]

Characteristics

Buffout is a consumable performance enhancing drug, that boosts both Strength and Endurance, in addition to a health increase of +60 Hit Points. After four minutes the effects wears off and you will lose 60 Hit Points from your current total; if you have less than 60 health when it wears off your total health will be reduced to 1.

Addiction can occur when using this chem and can only be removed by a visit to the doctor or by the temporary effects of Fixer. It carries a 10% addiction rate.

In Fallout: New Vegas, Buffout is needed for the Fallout: New Vegas side quest High Times. To help Jacob Hoff kick his addiction, the character will need a Speech level of 50 - or a Science level of 50 and Fixer (1), psycho (1), and Buffout (1). If the character's Speech and Science levels are too low Fixer (10) will be needed.

Notes

  • If you look carefully at bottles of Buffout, you'll see that the icon for Buffout in Fallout 1 and 2 is integrated into the labeling of the item. Printed on theses bottles are lengthy usage instructions and an expiration date of 10/13.

Bugs

  • Taking stimpaks while the Buffout health bonus is active will use your stimpaks even if you are at full health.
  • PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png If you attempt to use the status tab to heal yourself, you can't gain the extra 60HP afforded by the chem. However, if you use stimpaks or other healing items in the inventory-aid panel, you can gain the full 60HP.
