Welcome to Nukapedia!

Hello, Pecoes, we are glad you have joined the Fallout Wiki!

Wiki

For assistance, please feel free to reach out to our admins or join the Nukapedia Discord server. We look forward to working with you!

Sincerely, GarouxBloodline (talk) 09:11, May 29, 2013 (UTC)

Welcome!

  • "The tables in your wiki are sometimes rather large and can be hard to read."
    • I'm impressed. It's not every day that we find someone with your initiative and skill!
  • "I've noticed that you guys didn't pick on my earlier suggestion to limit the width of TOCs."
    • I apologize for this, as this is a change that would benefit the wiki. The fault is with me since I can be a tad forgetful at times. I'll make sure to have this brought up with the other Administrators, and I'm sure there will be no controversy, whatsoever.
  • Sorry to be so blunt, but in its current state, it looks butt-ugly on some pages."
    • Depending on resolution, I absolutely agree with you. There's still a lot that we can do to make Nukapedia more aesthetically pleasing.
  • "If the only reason you haven't picked up on it, is because you guys lack CSS expertise..."
    • We lack technical skills in general, at the moment. We do have a few users that are able to aid us in that field, but this is fairly limited.
  • "...then I request to be made an admin on this wiki!"
    • An interesting proposition, but unfortunately, it would go against both our policies and collective community consciousness to just so blatantly hand out such extra tools. However, I have done a bit of research into your history around Wikia, and I have to say that I have seen nothing but good from you. This, along with your community skills and initiative, I would fully support you requesting for such rights once you meet our basic requirements. You may find those requirements here.

──────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────────── I am greatly looking forward to seeing you rise throughout our wiki and community, should you decide to remain with us. Thank you again for the help that you've already given us. ForGaroux Some Assembly Required! 04:26, May 7, 2013 (UTC)

CSS

Howdy, Pecoes. I did see your message to Bleep about the TOC css fix. I looked at the page (granted in Firefox only) and the TOC aligned to the left of the infobox for me. Had it not, I would have looked at adding your fix. I'll check it in other browsers to see if it's browser specific.

As for the table css you just left for Leon, I'll look at that tonight. I would suggest creating a table class just for long tables using that css and only applying it to the ones that really need it. There are some long tables that we use hightlighted colors on to represent certain things, (e.g. highlighted weapons on the weapon overview pages denote unique weapons) and we won't want the shading to confuse readers. I appreciate your help and suggestions, and recommend that if you have any further suggestions or ideas that you run them by me. I have enough knowledge of css to test out your fixes and apply them, but not enough to create everything we need from scratch. Thanks again,  The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 19:43, May 7, 2013 (UTC)

TOC screen
This is what I'm getting (with source, I just wanted to make sure I didn't have anything effecting the css class "toc"). This is very odd. I've checked it on two computers, two accounts, chrome and FF each. Still not getting that you're getting. Anyone else out there seeing this? The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 22:42, May 7, 2013 (UTC)
No problem. I looked at the long table css you provided, and it does interfere with the highlighting on some tables (e.g. Fallout:_New_Vegas_weapons). What I'm gonna do is add it as class va-table-shaded or something like that, and we'll add the class to the tables that need it most. Did you see any others like the perk page that stuck out to you? The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 00:34, May 8, 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the compliments, but I wouldn't say we're completely capable with CSS. And definitely not with java script. I knew absolutely nothing about html, css or java script a year ago. I've since learned enough html and css to be, as they say, dangerous. It often takes many failed attempts to get something right. Since most of what I've learned is seeing how things have been done here in the past and changing them to suit new needs, problems arise when something completely new needs to be done. With no base of knowledge or a suitable example to work from, I'm at a loss. And my attempts to learn java script have been even weaker. I understand the principles behind the code, but I really need to learn to write something from scratch. I plan on taking courses, when I have the time.
That being said, if you're interested, I'd like to keep an open line for when I do run into something beyond my limited skills. As always, we appreciate the help and compliments on our community. We're pretty proud of the community we've built here and welcome anyone to it. I added that table class, va-table-shaded, so if you run across any tables that need it, go ahead and apply it. Thanks again,  The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 19:33, May 9, 2013 (UTC)

RE: Tables

What ended up being wrong on your end? And thank you. :) We do try hard to keep our community active and thriving. I hope our wiki has been to your liking. As for the Adminship request, have you ever thought about settling down with a wiki? We could always use and appreciate skills like yours, and I would happily support such a request should you meet our requirements. And definitely. If we have something that goes over our heads, I'll make sure to send it your way to see if you're interested. ForGaroux Some Assembly Required! 17:38, May 9, 2013 (UTC)

User page backgrounds

There's a few of us that use them, some a little better formatted than others. As long as you don't cover up anything Wikia's gonna get mad about (ads and whatnot), you can customize your userpage any way you'd like. It's a great way to get new editors to learn a bit about editing and keep them interested. We've got tons of userbox templates that folks seem to like to use, too. The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 19:48, May 10, 2013 (UTC)

Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. I looked at that js. If I have time tonight, I'll play with importing it and seeing how it works. The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 19:42, May 13, 2013 (UTC)

Infobox image problem

I've moved all discussion of the infobox template image issue to Forum:Infobox_image_size_problem so the conversation can occur in one place. You can see my recent findings there. The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 17:06, May 18, 2013 (UTC)

Archiving old forums

Hey, Pecoes, one of the things I've had running around in my head was creating some kind of "Archived forum" template. Ideally it would check to see if a forum had not been edited in XX amount of days/months and pop up a message box at the top of the forum and lock the forum to editing to all but sysops. I've seen similar kinds of things on CC. Is this something you're interested in looking at? The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 02:05, June 17, 2013 (UTC)

I could write you a bot that crawls all forum pages and sets the status of old pages to protected and prepends that template. Someone (you?) with admin privileges would have to run that bot once per day. That can be done automatically in the background with a scheduled task or a cron job – depending on what OS you use. I would recommend a MediaWiki message instead of a template though, since templates should be editable by non-admins. -- pecoes 02:41, June 17, 2013 (UTC)
