Keep your distance. Who are you, and what do you want?

Carlyle St. Clair III is a man living at his house north of New Vegas in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[edit | edit source]

Carlyle St. Clair III is the heir to an influential merchant house with more problems than wits. St. Clair become a black sheep of sorts and was completely ostracized from his family for something he refuses to talk about.[1] After leaving the family estate, St. Clair began to wander until he found himself a little nook north of New Vegas where no one knew about his reputation.[2]

With his originally well-off lifestyle and near complete seclusion, he was a natural choice after weeks of scouting as the main course for Mortimer's banquet at the Ultra-Luxe. However, when Mortimer's men attempted to capture Carlyle, they failed and he escaped. Since the attempt, he hasn't slept or completely left his house, ever wary that another attempt to kidnap him might be made.[3][4]

Notes[edit | edit source]

  • Carlyle St. Clair's house is very well camouflaged against the mountain, and is difficult to find, especially if you are looking at every house in the vicinity. The shack is the same color as the mountain range and is flush up against the mountain. If you have trouble finding the shack where Carlyle St. Clair lives, just follow close to the edge of the east side of the mountain range, beginning just north of North Vegas square.
  • He will disappear after Beyond the Beef.

Notable quotes[edit | edit source]

  • "[Your naked body, stud. Go into the dumpster and I'll meet you after I change.] The dumpster? That's filthy! I can't tell you how much that turns me on. Takes me back to my youth when I used to fool around with the help at our estate. I shouldn't... but... it's been so long. And when is this ever gonna happen to me again? Okay, you're on. Don't keep me waiting, gorgeous."
  • "[You keep tilting your head to one side. Is your neck okay?] It's been stiff lately. Since I was attacked I've been afraid to sleep in my bed. I know it's irrational. Now I can't hardly sleep at all. I just nod off from time to time. I'm so tired."
  • "[Try breathing deeply three times and then blowing on your thumb.] Really? Is that some kind of ancient Chinese secret or something? Well, what the hell. I'll try anything once. Here goes..."
  • "[You. You don't seem like you fit in here.] That obvious, huh? Yeah I'm not from around here. But where I'm from, they don't want me, so that's just as well. Really with my reputation, there aren't many places I can go that'll have me. My own family's blackballed me, and they've got a lot of clout."
  • "[What's so bad about your reputation?] Oh, sure. That's all I need. Someone telling people around here about my reputation. I'll be run out of here before dawn. Forget it."
  • "[Joining the White Glove Society could clear your name. They're respected.] I've heard of them. Ultra-Luxe, right? Yeah, that'd be a step in the right direction. They'd never have me, though."
  • "[Talk to a man named Mortimer. He's looking for some big-name new members.] Yeah? Okay, maybe I will. Hell, anything's better than this. Thanks."

Bugs[edit | edit source]

  • PCIcon pc.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png Once you get to the shack, he usually is not there. One solution has worked on PC, but you still may not have access to Carlyle's dialogue tree. Enter the following into the console: prid 127dd7, disable, enable
    • Try knocking out Carlyle, drag his body to the dumpster, and see if the dumpster will let you put his body in. If this doesn't work, enter resetquest 0010d2c6 into the console just after the lines above and then go try knocking him out again after starting the quest over again. This means that you will have to go back to Mortimer and start the events over, and the characters that may have died previously will still be dead.
  • Xbox 360Icon xbox360.png PlayStation 3Icon ps3.png Choosing to pistol whip Carlyle St. Clair can sometimes kill him, causing you to immediately fail Beyond the Beef.

  4. The Courier: "The main course is a person?"
Mortimer: "Yes. The wrong person. We scouted the right one for weeks. The heir to a mercantile empire. Sort of a black sheep. He cut ties with his family and left their estate to wander. He was ideal. Corn-fed and well-to-do, but no one to miss him if he were to disappear. Unfortunately the trap my subordinates set for him failed. And as he escaped, he saw their faces. Now he's wary."
