Charles Dickens (February 7, 1812 – June 9, 1870) was an English writer and social critic, of the Victorian period.

Background
Dickens was born in Portsmouth, England. After his father was thrown into debtors' prison, a young Charles left school to work in a factory. Though he received little formal schooling he nevertheless went on to become one of the most popular and influential writers of all time. Over his lifetime, Dickens wrote 15 novels and 5 novellas, along with hundreds of other publications.
He died on June 9th, 1870 (at 58 years of age) from a stroke.
