Children of Atom are characters appearing in Fallout 4, its add-on Far Harbor, and Fallout: Wasteland Warfare.

Background[]

The Church of the Children of Atom is a religious movement that worships a deity known as Atom. They also revere radiation, which they call "His Glow.” The cult's presence in the Commonwealth is at least partially the result of an expedition sent northward from their cultural center of Megaton in the Capital Wasteland. In the decade since the Battle of Project Purity, the religion has expanded across the Commonwealth and beyond.

In 2286, the Commonwealth region was attacked by the Last Son of Atom, causing the Children of Atom to be driven out of the core of the region.[Fallout RPG 1]

Small, isolated groups of Children of Atom can occasionally be spotted anywhere in the region, from the Crater of Atom in the Glowing Sea, all the way to the Nucleus on the Island. The Children have sent preachers to spread the word to the Commonwealth,[1] although the outcome of these expeditions are not always peaceful, as travelers who cross paths with the Church are often met with suspicion and hostility.

Locations[]

  • In the Commonwealth, generic Children of Atom are only reliably found at Kingsport Lighthouse and the adjoining crater house. They are always hostile.
    • They can be seen working the dock here. One stands at the helm of a large boat.
    • After the light is extinguished and Kingsport is claimed as a player settlement, Children of Atom will periodically spawn at the docks.
  • The only other way to encounter generic Children of Atom is a random event which involves them fighting a group of three high-ranking Gunners. This can occur at locations such as at the church in Hyde Park or a derelict building just north of College Square.
  • Dead generic Children of Atom can be found at Jalbert Brothers Disposal. They mistook the "Brothers Jalbert" for historical figures associated with the church.[2] Here they attacked travelers out of distrust.[2] They were recently wiped out in some kind of attack or explosive disaster.[3]
  • Named Children of Atom can only be encountered at the Crater of Atom and the sentinel site. They remain non-hostile even if attacked, with the exception of Brother Henri, who will defend his temple if attacked or provoked.
  • Far Harbor (add-on) Non-hostile generic Children of Atom can be found at the Nucleus, with clothing and voice lines unique to that location.

Notes[]

  • Even if the Sole Survivor joins the Children of Atom, those in the Commonwealth remain hostile to the player.
    • Far Harbor (add-on) If the player joins the Children at the Nucleus, Mother Isolde and Brother Henri will recognize the legitimacy of the Sole Survivor's allegiance, bypassing their speech checks.
  • Isolde's followers, who are all named, share the same voice type with the generic Children to the far north. However, Isolde's followers almost never react to violence, delivering a single combat bark and returning to neutral status. The generic Children found elsewhere are always-hostile and never speak outside of combat. For these reasons, many voice lines are functionally exclusive to one group.
  • The Preacher figure from Wasteland Warfare depicts a kneeling cultist with leaking HalluciGen canisters and some sort of esoteric tome.

  7. Confessor Cromwell: "Behold! He is coming with the clouds! And every eye shall be blind with his glory! Every ear shall be stricken deaf to hear the thunder of his voice! Let the men, women, and children of the Earth come forth to gather and behold the power of Atom! Let those who dwell here in his favored land attend now to the words of the Prophet of Atom! Come forth and drink the waters of the Glow, for this ancient weapon of war is our salvation, it is the very symbol of Atom's glory!  Let it serve as a reminder of the Division that has occurred in the past and the resplendence of the promise of our division in the times to come! Give your bodies to Atom, my friends. Release yourself to his power, feel his Glow, and be Divided. There shall be no tears, no sorrow, no suffering, for in the Division, we shall see our release from the pain and hardships of this world. Yea, your suffering shall exist no longer; it shall be washed away in Atom's Glow, burned from you in the fire of his brilliance. Each of us shall give birth to a billion stars formed from the mass of our wretched and filthy bodies. Each of us shall be mother and father to a trillion civilizations. Each of us shall know peace, shall know an end to pain, and shall know Atom in his glory. I urge you, my friends--come, drink with me and pray... Glorious Atom, I give unto you these feeble bones. I present to your will this frail body. I beg of you to use me as your vessel, guide me to your brilliance, divide each particle and give relief to this rotten flesh. Cast the fragile form of this ephemeral body into new life in the forge of your Glow. Atom, come--bestow your presence on your unworthy servant. We stay true, until the Day of Division--until the dawn of your return to His humble world."
    (Confessor Cromwell's dialogue)
