The cleaver is a weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.

Characteristics[]

While typically intended for use in chopping heavy chunks of meat in a butcher's shop, like many things in the post-War wasteland, cleavers have been repurposed as weapons.

Compared to a machete, the cleaver deals less damage per strike at a slower attack rate, thus having a lower damage-per-second (DPS) value, deals less critical hit damage, costs more AP, and weighs the same. Conversely, the cleaver has higher durability, has no Melee Weapons skill requirement and a lower 2 Strength requirement to the machete's 25 and 3 respectively. It also deals bonus damage to limbs, increasing chances of crippling an enemy, and is considered an improved holdout weapon while the machete is not.

Special attack[]

The cleaver has a special Back Slash attack, which does 70% damage in V.A.T.S. at the cost of 5 fewer action points (requires a Melee Weapons skill of 50).

It is possible to execute Back Slash outside of V.A.T.S. (without the required Melee Weapons skill of 50 to perform the move) by initiating a power attack (hold attack button) while moving forward.

Durability[]

The cleaver can successfully strike about 1,245 times from full condition before breaking.
