Coin Operator is a special perk in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Dead Money.

Obtaining[]

This perk is rewarded by talking to Christine any time after recruiting her during Find Collar 12: Christine and choosing the dialogue option to discuss the topic of the Sierra Madre vending machines. One will then need to pass a 6 Perception check followed by a 6 Intelligence check in order for Christine to teach the perk.

Effects[]

Gaining this perk unlocks the ability to use the workbench to combine 1 fission battery and 2 scrap metal to perfectly replicate Sierra Madre chips for use in the vending machines.

Notes[]

  • Although the description refers to the produced chips as "slugs" to indicate their counterfeited nature, they will still be added to the player character's inventory as Sierra Madre chips.
  • The perk is of limited use in the Sierra Madre proper due to the shortage of fission batteries, but it is the most profitable way to gather Sierra Madre chips: a 75-cap fission battery and two 1-cap scrap metals result in 50 chips (1.54 caps per chip), whereas redeeming a 10-cap pack of cigarettes at a vending machine only results in 5 chips (2 caps per chip), and a 40-cap carton of cigarettes only results in 20 chips (2 caps per chip). The worst offender - the cashier on the Sierra Madre Casino floor - will only exchange pre-War money for chips at a one-for-one basis (10 caps per chip). That said, once back in the Mojave, the perk's use can be somewhat overshadowed if one earned at least 7,500 chips in the Sierra Madre's casino before leaving, which results in a complimentary voucher worth 1,000 chips being delivered on top of a supply of 100 chips to the bunker dropbox every 3 in-game days.
  • The vending machine in Elijah's chemistry lab (the room locked by an Hard-locked terminal when starting the add-on) in the abandoned Brotherhood of Steel bunker allows for the purchase of any items available through the vending machines at the Sierra Madre (as long as the requisite vending machine codes are found before leaving the Madre). Some potentially difficult to obtain items, such as weapon repair kits, can be bought from this vending machine with Sierra Madre chips - making this perk much more cost effective than crafting weapon repair kits at a workbench.
