The Constitution of the United States is the basic law of the United States of America, a world object in Fallout 3, and an inventory item cut from the add-on Point Lookout.

Background[]

The Constitution replaced the earlier Articles of Confederation, becoming the foundation of United States government and legal system. Originally presented and adopted at the Constiutional Convention in Philadelphia, on September 17, 1787, the Constitution was ratified in the subsequent year, turning thirteen confederated states into a single federal republic. The Constitution was continuously amended, with the first ten amendments ratified together in 1791, as the Bill of Rights.[1]

Multiple copies of the Constitution were made for distribution. By the 21st century, original copies became priceless artifacts entrusted to the care of the National Archives. After the Great War, the sole known copy was recovered from the ruins of the Archives in 2256, by treasure hunters hired by Abraham Washington, and preserved in the Capitol Preservation Society.[2]

Although it is one of the crown jewels of the Society's collection, its curator greatly misunderstood its contents and history: The entry describing it is riddled with errors, such as claiming it was drafted in 1786, the convention was called Consitutional Convention of Philly, rather than simply in Philadelphia, misinterprets the role of articles and amendments, claiming the body of the Constiution was changed, while in reality amendments are appended to the Constitution, and finally that these amendments were made unilaterally by ruling Presidents during their "reigns", rather than being ratified.[2]

Characteristics[]

The Declaration is present in the games directly purely as a scenery item at the Society. A cut portable version is present in Point Lookout, and when collected appears in the Pip-Boy as a scroll, similar to the Declaration of Independence.

Finally, it is also referenced in the cut Fallout 76 note Public notice - Martial Law, in which Article 1, Section 9, Clause 2, is suspended by Morgantown Police Chief Mayfield.
