Depleted uranium rounds
Depleted uranium rounds (DU) are high caliber bullets where the penetrator is formed from uranium with a lower content of fissile U-235 isotope. As depleted uranium is 1.67 times denser than lead, slightly below tungsten and gold, and just 16% lower than the density of the rare osmium or iridium (the densest substances on Earth in normal pressures), it has been adopted by the United States military as an armor penetrating round: At the same weight, a DU projectile is smaller than an equivalent lead projectile, resulting in better aerodynamic properties and improved penetration due to greater concentration of penetrative power at a given point.
Examples[edit | edit source]
- Jake sold some a few years before 2161
- .50 caliber round, depleted uranium: The most powerful armor piercing ammunition in the wasteland.
- West-Tek developed a prototype railgun that utilized the ammunition in 2044, unfortunately, the project was cancelled, and the gun went on to be displayed at various locales.
