You see Ed. Ed's dead.

— In-game desription

Ed is a hapless Vault Dweller who died right outside the Vault door of Vault 13. Only bones remain in 2161.

Overview

Ed was sent out as a scout by Overseer Jacoren long before the water chip broke and the Vault Dweller emerged from the Vault. His body was never recovered and was consumed by rats, leaving behind only bones.[1] He was the first "person" encountered by the Dweller, reminding him just how dangerous the wasteland can be - and providing him with an additional knife and 24 10mm armor piercing bullets.

Behind the scenes

Zed's Dead, baby, Zed's dead. From Pulp Fiction. That's part of the reference. Ed was twofold: to immediately show the player that the outside world was dangerous, and to tell the player that he wasn't the first choice of someone to send out. Ed was sent out before the waterchip malfunction, however, since he's just bones.

Appearances

Ed's corpse appears in Fallout.

Ed's corpse can also be seen on the lower deck of PMV Valdez in Fallout 2.
