Edward Rutledge (November 23, 1749 – January 23, 1800) was an American politician, a slaveholder and the youngest signer of the Declaration of Independence at age 26.


Rutledge served as a Representative of South Carolina in the Second Continental Congress during the American Revolution. In the early years of the revolution, he took a seat as a member of the South Carolinian Senate and was an captain of artillery for the state militia. He was captured by British forces in 1780 and released the following year. After the revolution, he served as the 39th Governor of South Carolina, dying in office.
