Why, yes! (Wags her finger at you.) New Reno is a beautiful city, but there is SIN here - much of which can be traced back to the evils of alcohol…or as you tribesmen call it… (Pauses dramatically.) …FIREWATER!

Ethyl Wright is the head of the New Reno Temperance Union and the oblivious spouse of Orville Wright in Fallout 2.

Background[edit | edit source]

Ethyl Wright is a pleasantly plump woman with rose cheeks[1] and surprisingly well-muscled, powerful arms, the matriarch of the Wrights lives in a world almost entirely of her own making. She believes that temperance is the only way to avoid sin and that New Reno embodies all that is wrong with the world. To fight the alcohol, drugs, whoring, and general debauchery in the city (all its attractions, in other words), she has founded the Temperance Union. However, her efforts in that direction are as effective as her perception: The key member of the Union is an alcoholic priest named Father Tully, who is one of the biggest clients of the Wright alcohol empire.

Indeed, the Wrights are the biggest producers of alcohol in Reno, despite Ethyl's efforts. She once uncovered her husband's dealings, who promptly promised to dismantle the still and end his little endeavor. However, this was only a ruse to humor his wife: The still still works and Ethyl is kept in the dark, not just by Orville, but her entire family. She is happy to attend her little Union meetings and cultivate her view of the world, all the while bringing new Wright children into the world. Her fertility earned her the moniker of Baby Factory from her husband, though obviously, he doesn't say it to her face. An interesting element of Ethyl's worldview is her opinion of tribals. Having interacted with none in her life, she apparently assumes they are either uneducated or deaf and will launch into a loud, slow welcoming rant. Apparently she thinks speaking loudly and slowly is the only way to communicate.[2][3]
