It is the removed arm cannon of a guardian drone. It fires a ball of energy that acts as a grenade, bouncing and then exploding after a period of about 3 seconds. The projectile has the ability to move buses and cars before exploding.
 +
This weapon is hard to use at first, but once you understand its operation, it becomes an extremely devastating weapon.

 +
A direct hit from the ball of energy will also deal a high amount of damage, and hitting a target's middle to upper body will usually result in the ball dropping straight down before exploding, making it a good way to hit specific targets with the explosion.
Not sure exactly what this sentence means, but this seems like a good spot to put this, I received negative kharma when I told them to run free? Even after I deactivated the collars, unlocked the gate, and had already killed all the Legion in the area... why would I lose kharma for that? - Ductyl 24.19.234.200 04:51, November 10, 2010 (UTC)

When fired into water, the projectile will continue normally, bouncing off any obstructions under the water. It will explode normally like other explosives.
* If you want good karma after killing all the legionaries, pick the slave key off the corpse of Canyon Runner, then unlock the collars/give it to Mrs. Weathers (I believe; been a while since I did it). If you don't retrieve the key, the game seems to assume that the legionaries are still around and you are just toying with the family and trying to trick them into getting shot, hence the bad karma. I get two more journal entries: "Find Frank Weathers' Family" which pops when you enter Cottonwood Cove and "Return to Frank Weathers" after I've freed the three slaves (I sneak-killed all the Legionaries, disabled their collars with the 50 Explosives check, and gave the key to the wife when they ran off). I also got a map pointer back to Aerotech.

I went back to talk to Frank Weathers, told them they were alive, and he gave me 50(?) caps. He asked me where they were and was given a Barter 35 check to tell him their location for some caps, a Speech 35 check to tell him that his family doesn't to see abusive ass anymore, and two more non-check options that are a rehash of the two check options listed previously: Why would I tell an abuser? or They're at the Old Mormon Fort.

* When I made the article, I was unaware of Frank Weathers at all. Hence why everything only really contains the information about going to Cottonwood Cove and talking to Canyon Runner and then the Weathers. That's literally a two-step process without ever finding or talking to Frank Weathers.

I completed the quest and saved over all saves before I started the quest long before I bought the strategy guide and knew that Frank could also start the quest (and before I knew of Frank's existance).

You can always edit the information into this article yourself. I had the same thing happen, however I think in my case it may be because Frank Weathers is dead and the quest had already failed. Interesting sidenote: when encountering this particular bug I convinceed Mrs. Weathers to make a run for it by passing a speech check of 40 but she does not move and allows me to keep repeating netting 40XP each time.

Interesting thing to note: I recieved the quest from talking to Mrs. Weathers and actually avoided the option to deactivate the collars. After I unlocked the gate, it didn't give me the option to do so again, but they didn't detonate and they managed to get back to the Old Mormon Fort safely. I'm not sure if this is a bug or something. Take 1ne 22:30, January 21, 2011 (UTC)

The drone cannon is a weapon of alien origin which is added to Fallout 3 in the Mothership Zeta add-on.

Characteristics

It is the removed arm cannon of a guardian drone. It fires a ball of energy that acts as a grenade, bouncing and then exploding after a period of about 3 seconds. The projectile has the ability to move buses and cars before exploding. This weapon is hard to use at first, but once you understand its operation, it becomes an extremely devastating weapon.

A direct hit from the ball of energy will also deal a high amount of damage, and hitting a target's middle to upper body will usually result in the ball dropping straight down before exploding, making it a good way to hit specific targets with the explosion.

When fired into water, the projectile will continue normally, bouncing off any obstructions under the water. It will explode normally like other explosives.

Durability

The drone cannon can successfully fire about 417 times from full condition before breaking.

Variants

 • Drone cannon Ex-B Mothership Zeta (add-on)- it has increased range over the drone cannon, and the projectiles fired from it explode on impact while still arcing, unlike the bouncy drone cannon shot.
