Trees are a type of flora found throughout the wastelands.

Characteristics[]

While the Great War caused the death of innumerable trees, many still remain alive, either growing naturally or cultivated under artificial conditions, such as by utilization of the Garden of Eden Creation Kit or underground in vaults or within the Institute. Before the war, in northern climates, moss grew on the shaded side of trees.[1]

There are many varieties of trees based on region, ranging from pines in high elevations such as Jacobstown to Joshua trees in the lower Mojave. In other parts of the country, deciduous trees fill the landscape in abundance, such as in Zion Canyon and throughout Appalachia. Parts of trees, such as hollow logs and stumps, can contain items.

Notes[]

  • Live trees are seen in full autumn color in pre-War Sanctuary Hills and post-War West Virginia.
  • Trees can not be interacted with, with the exception of some hollow logs and tree stumps.
  • The Treeminders of the Capital Wasteland worship trees, namely Harold, and are named after different species of trees, specifically birch, cypress, laurel, linden, maple, poplar, and yew.

Appearances[]

Trees appear in Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Fallout 76.

Behind the scenes[]

Bob, the tree growing out of Harold's head, is described in the Fallout Bible as an entirely new species of tree, with no pre-War equivalents or classifications.[Non-game 1]

  1. Fallout Bible 6: "5) What kind of tree is growing out of Harold's head? An oak, "the larch", or something else??"
"It's a completely new species of tree, no Pre-War equivalents, and it's never been classified. It's unique and special, just like Harold."
