The Soil Stradivarius (pronounced "swal") was one of the most prized and unique instruments ever made by the Italian craftsman Antonio Stradivari.

Background[]

The Soil Stradivarius is a violin that was built by Antonio Stradivari in 1714; its name, like other Stradivarius violins, was given to it later over time.[1] Prior to the Great War, the Soil was owned by Hilda Egglebrecht, a talented violinist. She kept the instrument in a specially-made case which would maintain the exact conditions needed to keep the instrument in perfect shape.[2] After she was invited to enter Vault 92, a vault purportedly dedicated to preserving musical talent, Hilda took the Stradivarius with her inside.[3] After the failure of Vault 92's experiment, the Soil Stradivarius has since remained within the depths of the deteriorating vault for the following two centuries.

Location[]

The violin can be found in Vault 92's sound testing block in a recording studio, which is the southernmost room there. It is on a wooden table (map loc.). To enter, activate the studio computer on the other side of that hallway.

Related quest[]

  • Agatha's Song: Agatha, an elderly violinist and descendant of Hilda Egglebrecht, tasks the Lone Wanderer with recovering the Soil Stradivarius for her. The violin can then be given to her, or alternatively sold to Abraham Washington in Rivet City or Ahzrukhal in Underworld (and then can be optionally recovered and given to Agatha).

Notes[]

Though it no longer serves any purpose, this item is still found in the game files for Fallout: New Vegas.

Behind the scenes[]

The Soil Stradivarius is a real-life Stradivarius violin, named after Belgian industrialist Amédée Soil.

  1. The Lone Wanderer: "What do you know about the Soil Stradivarius?"
Agatha: "Not too much I'm afraid. It was fabricated way back in 1714 by a famous Italian craftsman named Antonio Stradivari. He had made a bunch of Stradivarius violins actually, and each one was individually named over time to identify them. They are regarded as the most outstanding instruments ever made... and no two sound alike they say. Incredible."

  2. The Lone Wanderer: "After 200 years, how can you be certain the violin is in decent shape?"
Agatha: "She kept it in a special pressurized case. Inside the case is the perfect temperature and humidity for the instrument. If the case is still functioning, the Stradivarius would be in perfect shape. Hilda's Stradivarius was named the Soil Stradivarius. All of them had names. That's what I want you to get."

  3. The Lone Wanderer: "2077? I can't even imagine that long ago."
Agatha: "It certainly is a long time. That precious instrument has been through a lot. Anyway, Hilda was quite a special woman. Classically trained and exceptionally talented at the violin. Her pride and joy was her Stradivarius Violin. I can only imagine how exquisite this instrument must have been. When war reared its head, she was invited by Vault-Tec into Vault 92. They claimed the vault would be dedicated to preserving musical talent."
