The food additive is a quest item in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

This additive is a chemical secreted by the spore plants of Vault 22, as well as their ancestors (codified by the Vault scientists as species BE908). It acts as a nectar which helps the plant to attract insects for predation.[1] The scientists in Vault 22's pest control division, who had been studying the plants, found that this secretion acted as a mood stimulant on small mammals. The scientists in food production intended to see if it had an effect on humans as well, but it is uncertain whether they were able to begin before the B. mordicana contagion which decimated the Vault.[2] Keely performed additional tests on the substance and concluded that it does indeed affect humans, with no additional side effects or risks of addiction.[3]

Characteristics[]

It is a food additive meant to be given to Cpl. William Farber in Camp McCarran for the unmarked quest Not Worth a Hill of Corn and Beans.

Location[]

It is found in Vault 22. When exiting the elevator on the food production level, the main hallway will lead to a lefthand hall. The first room on the left will lead to an office with spores growing out of a desk. The food additive is sitting on the top of the desk and has no weight.

Keely: "A few things here and there, but a lot of the data has been corrupted, and all of the live samples have been contaminated by the spore plants. One interesting thing I found is that one of the chemicals secreted by the spore plants serves as a mild stimulant when ingested by humans. As far as I can tell, it has no side effects or addictive properties, aside from the inherent psychological ones, of course. Now that I think of it, there was a Cpl. Farber back at McCarran who'd probably be interested in it. There's a sample of it around here somewhere."
