News Notability

Hi J,

Just wanted to sound you out on something. As you know in the News Digests we've covered wasteland news as what is essentially our only exception to the Fallout exclusive focus, on the grounds its made by the same Devs and has a special relationship with Fallout.

According to Twiiter, the first Skyrim DLC is going to be announced imminently. I'm not planning on covering it, other than as a comment (in the comment part) as although it is Beth made, it doesn't have much of a link to Fallout. Do you think this is the right balance?

Ta Agent c 22:41, April 30, 2012 (UTC)

Hey J, minor change in plan... GameInformer have an exclusive this month with Zenimax online on their "Elder Scrolls online" project. I'm including the Skyrim DLC and this as a very brief mention to say they exist, that Fallout Online therefore isn't Zenimax-Online's secret project, and that we wont be covering either the DLC or TES online in any more detail. Dummy wording is in my sandbox if you want to take a look.

I noticed the main difference in the edits were the new definitions and an added fo:nv section. Do we need to list scrap metal? That is something we never did before. I can put up a vote for formal definitions if you want.--Kingclyde 00:09, May 1, 2012 (UTC)

I'm fine, thanks :) Hope you're fine as well (despite the drama which seems to be plaguing this wiki recently). Sorry for the late reply, but I don't check my Wikia talk pages as often anymore - it's usually better to leave messages on my talk page at The Vault if you need a timely response.

Regarding the question at hand, your suspicions go in the right direction. There are two possibilities for you:

  • Quick solution: Replace "border" with "color" in {{Image needed}} and {{Mbox management}}.
  • Future-proof solution: Update {{Mbox}} along with the accompanying CSS, and then switch all page management templates to using {{Mbox management}} (you can probably simply import The Vault's versions).

An Idea

I thought about it some more and I think we should actually leave fixed locations out. Just for right now. I have an idea: We should create an official list of which weapons/armour should be considered notable if they have a fixed location. Then we can create a symbol template to put next to these sorts of NL, so experienced users don't remove them thinking that they're not notable under our general policies. Maybe write out this list and put it up as a vote to see what the community thinks of it. Dragon Skål! 17:22, May 10, 2012 (UTC)

Only reason why we should remove them for right now is because technically our policies don't dictate fixed locations for loot as notable. So we'd be kind of making up a rule there. Dragon Skål! 17:23, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
If you'd like, I can write out a rough list, that we can go over later. I'll be sitting down and working on the Moose anyways, so I should have the time to do that as well. Dragon Skål! 17:27, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
GECK isn't really needed, I don't think, when making the list. (Although it will be needed when find locations afterwords.) It'll be pretty simple to deduce which items are highly sought after, and whether or not they're hard to find, which would warrant mentioning them in the first place. (Such as the NCR Combat Armour. I don't think this is notable, as you can find it at all major NCR bases, and you can loot them off of NCR hit squads constantly if you are vilified by the NCR. But I would consider the Plasma Caster as being notable enough to list. Or even the tri-beam laser rifle) Dragon Skål! 17:41, May 10, 2012 (UTC)
I actually have no idea how good they are in New Vegas. I mostly just remember how over-powered they were in Fallout 3 when used against you, and how easily they broke. Fixed Locations

Before starting my list, this is what I am taking into consideration:

  • Either is not sold by merchants, or shows up rarely in a merchant's goods.
  • Usefulness and re-sale value.
  • Either drops rarely or not at all from all types of enemies.
  • This list does not include DLC content, when considering how common vanilla weapons/armour are in them.
  • After these points have been taken into consideration, all of the working factors are added together to determine whether the item in question in notable for fixed locations.
  • (Only FO3/FO:NV) - Means that the game specified is the only one where the weapon is notable for fixed locations. For instance, miniguns are common in Fallout 3, but extremely rare in Fallout: New Vegas.
  • (FO3/FO:NV only weapon/armour) - Means that the weapon/armour is either unique to the game noted in parenthesis, or that the only notable fixed locations are in the game mentioned.

Now, here is the list I compiled of notable weapons and apparel when considering fixes locations and the points I listed above: (This list includes FO3/FO:NV)

-Weapons-

  • Silenced 10mm pistol
  • Infiltrator (FO3 only weapon)
  • Sniper Rifle (Only FO:NV)
  • Sawed-off Shotgun (Only FO:NV)
  • Minigun (Only FO:NV)
  • Gatling Laser (Only FO:NV)
  • Tesla Cannon
  • Gauss Rifle
  • Flamer (Only FO:NV)
  • Shiskebab (Only FO:NV)
  • Railway Rifle (FO3 only item)
  • Deathclaw Gauntlet (Only FO3)
  • Fat Man
  • Missile Launcher (Only FO:NV)
  • Plasma Rifle (Only FO:NV)
  • Tri-Beam Laser Rifle (Only FO:NV)
  • Bottlecap Mine
  • Nuka Grenade (FO3 only weapon)
  • Steel Saw (FO3 only weapon)
  • Rolling Pin
  • 12.7 Pistol (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Assault Carbine (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Light Machine Gun (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Marksman Carbine (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Plasma Caster (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Recharger Rifle (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Multiplas Rifle (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Grenade Machinegun (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Powder Charge (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Time Bomb (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Chainsaw (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Hatchet (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Throwing Knives (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Cattle Prod (FO:NV only weapon)
  • Throwing Hatchet (FO:NV only weapon)

-Armour-

  • I noticed you already compiled a list for this category. Let me know if you would like me to provide a list as well.

-Notes-

  • I have exhausted both lists quite thoroughly, and this is what I believe to be the only candidates for weapons/armour worthy of being noted when considering fixed locations. Everything else is either commonly dropped by enemies, is commonly found lying around in the wastes, or is commonly sold by traveling and permanent merchants.
  • Let me know if you believe anything should be added or removed. Dragon Skål! 07:33, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
I was thinking this should not be a factor as it is subjective to each individual player style->Usefulness. Resale value is good. Just my two-cents. Don't hurt me.--Kingclyde 17:28, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
I categorized usefulness by two extremes, and then ran them under the other points I was considering. So for instance, even though a silenced .22 pistol is found very rarely outside of shops, I would still never consider it as notable, even if it might be useful for stealth characters. But let's look at, say, a plasma caster which is no doubt highly sought after, even by players not fond with energy weapons. Even if a player wouldn't wish to actually use the plasma caster in combat, it still has usefulness in re-sale value or even as a decorative piece in your home. Dragon Skål! 17:35, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
I agree with KC, price should be taken into account, not usefulness. Also, rarity, even if the item lacks usefulness. Limmiegirl Lildeneb Talk! ♪ 22:15, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
Then you're agreeing with me as well. :') I never said usefulness was a singular point I was looking for. If I had taken usefulness alone as reason enough to list a weapon as notable for fixed locations, then my list would have been greatly expanded. Usefulness is only a small factor I that is looked at compared to the other points I mentioned above. Hence, my example of why I didn't add a .22 pistol. Or an AMR. As for price and rarity, if you read back again, you'll see I already listed those as contributing factors. Dragon Skål! 22:20, May 12, 2012 (UTC)
  • There we go! I added in a note in my original message to help clarify matters. Dragon Skål! 22:26, May 12, 2012 (UTC)

In given exmple: if you get 17 first, and opponent then gets 25, you've already won; if you get 25 first, and opponent then 17, the opponent must draw more. NCR-Great Khan War debate result

Well me and Garoux recently had a debate on when the NCR-Great Khan War started and what it included and the end result we got was to talk to one of the two bureaucrats, so I came to you. Basically, we hoped that initially you would be able to come to a conclusion, but the one we came to was making a page called War on Raiders, which would be akin to the War on Terror page on Wikipedia. Basically this page would have the NCR-Great Khan War merged in to it, but with additional information on the NCR's fights against the Vipers, Jackals and Fiends. So we come to you asking if you approve, if I should make this page and if you can come with any alternative. --Mr. Youtube 01:40, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

Cyborgs/Race

Hi J,
I was wondering if you could check the most recent edit to Cross; was just wondering if Cyborg counts as a "Race" for infobox purposes as I think I remember something about Races coming from the GECK... Thanks. Agent c 16:37, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

I need help D:

You wouldn't happen to know how to convert an image copied over into a rich text document in a way where I can upload it to a site such as Tinypic? Everything I've tried so far just corrupts the file. Dragon Skål! 16:44, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

I'm running a social experiment and I had some chat logs I wish to upload. I took some screen prints and I copied them over in a rich text document. Now I'm just looking for a way to upload them to Tinypic so I can link to the screenprints I took. Dragon Skål! 17:12, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

Laser rifle sound mix-up

You seem to know about those in-game sounds so I thought I shall let you know. The laser rifle from FNV article has the wrong firing sound, it plays the F3 one instead. I have no idea how these work so I can't be of much use with audio. --The Leaping Eagle 16:46, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

Will do. --The Leaping Eagle 17:03, May 15, 2012 (UTC)

Hey Jspoel! Just a reminder: DragonBorn's chat mod request has concluded. The votes are more... conflicting, so I think a BC should properly make the final call. --Skire (talk) 20:09, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

Just letting you know that I reverted your edits to the help page. Many of the items you listed are not unique or rare in any way, and either way, these changes need to be put up for the community to vote on. What counts as notable isn't really up to us. Here are the ones that I have a problem with:

  • Shock Baton
  • Advanced radiation suit (Fallout 3)
  • Pulse mine (Fallout 3)
  • Pulse grenade (Fallout 3)
  • Advanced radiation suit (Fallout: New Vegas)
  • Combat armor, reinforced
  • Legion Praetorian armor
  • Legion Vexillarius armor
  • Mad scientist scrubs
  • NCR Ranger combat armor
  • NCR salvaged power armor
  • Recon armor (Fallout: New Vegas)
  • Scientist scrubs
  • T-45d power armor (Fallout: New Vegas)
  • Valence radii-accentuator
  • Vault 19 jumpsuit
  • Proton axe
  • Scientist glove
  • Lever-action shotgun
  • Arc welder (Fallout: New Vegas)
  • Bumper sword
  • Satchel charge
  • Saturnite fist
  • Cowboy repeater
    • Some of these I'm very surprised at. Such as the pulse grenade or the cowboy repeater, which are extremely common, whether you're considering merchants, loot, or drops. Others are an infinite resource and quite easy to obtain. I'm looking at items such as the saturnite fist or the radiation suit. Dragon Skål! 21:31, May 14, 2012 (UTC)
I'm just trying to be careful. We have a lot of users these days talking about how we're just making up rules as we go, and I want to prove them wrong. At the moment, fixed locations and valuable items aren't in our policies as factors that contribute into what we consider notable loot or now. As for the list you came up with, I am mostly in agreement with what you have added. But I believe we should have limits on what we should consider as notable for fixed locations. For instance, there are no nail boards found just lying around in New Vegas, I believe. I would never consider it notable to list though if there turned out to be 1 or 2 places where you might find one. The 9-iron is another good example. I believe there are only 3 fixed locations for this weapon. But it's a crappy weapon still, and it doesn't belong in the notable loot section. I think we need to ask these questions first:
  • How rare is the item sold by merchants?
  • What tier item is it?
  • Is there only a limited amount of this item?
  • Is it unique?

Once we ask ourselves these questions, I believe we can properly judge which items are of note. Dragon Skål! 23:52, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

NCR-Raiders War

I have created the NCR-Raiders War page, but do we merge the NCR-Great Khans page or do we have a link connecting both pages? --Mr. Youtube 22:42, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

Patroller request

Hey J. You know, I was thinking: We have mandatory admin endorsements for chat mod applicants, what if we implement an admin endorsement for patrollers? I think it would work much better since a few admins keep an eye on editors and those with aptitude and potential, while it might escape a bureaucrat's eyes. This way we ensure our patrollers are of higher quality (some people now haven't worked enough for them). Let me know what you think (: --Skire (talk) 00:59, May 15, 2012 (UTC)

On a related note, have we considered giving the interwiki guys patroller rights so their edits will show up patrolled? The Gunny 380px-USMC-E7 svg 01:13, May 15, 2012 (UTC)
Patrollers kinda have an admin endorsement by definition, as the B/c has to decide to approve or not approve. Agent c 01:22, May 15, 2012 (UTC)
