Gene projector at the start of the game
The Gene Projector is a device which is capable of predicting a newborn baby's future appearance as a young adult by extrapolating physical characteristics from their genome. In Fallout 3, this device was used by James to show the Lone Wanderer how he/she would look "When you're all grown up".
Accessing Gene Projector[edit | edit source]
Facial reconstruction[edit | edit source]
Other than at "birth", there is only one other opportunities to use the Gene Projector to change your character's face: just before you exit Vault 101 after your escape. After that, the only facility to alter your facial appearance is with the Lasergrafter in the possession of Pinkerton in the broken bow of Rivet City.
Haircut[edit | edit source]
Even though only Pinkerton allows you to change the character's face after the tutorial, there are multiple characters which allow you to change your hair style:
- If you own a house in Megaton, your personal robot butler Wadsworth will be able to give you a new trim or shave your beard. If you choose the Tenpenny Tower Suite then Godfrey will perform the same service.
- You can receive a haircut from Butch when you encounter him during Trouble on the Homefront or if you have him as a follower.
- A haircut is also available from Snowflake in Underworld.
- It is also available from Joseph in Little Lamplight

Notes[edit | edit source]
- The gene projector can be seen in the medical area of Project Purity, located in the sub-basement.
- Another gene projector can be seen in the upstairs area of the REPCONN Test Site in Fallout: New Vegas, upside-down. The far right button on this unit is labeled "Body" instead of "Hair".
- Yet another can be found in the Medical area of the Brotherhood of Steel's Hidden Valley bunker, turned sideways, in Fallout: New Vegas.
- It is unknown which pre-War company developed and manufactured the gene projector, as there is no company logo on the device itself.
