Giant rats are an oversized version of pre-War common rodents. They vary greatly in strength, from ones the size of a cat or chihuahua to ones bigger than humans, like their mole rat cousins. The rats are hostile and will begin combat if one draws too near, severely delaying passage through rat-infested areas.[Non-game 1][Non-game 2]

Variants[]

Small rat[]

The smaller rats are still big enough to rival a dog in size. They usually attack in large groups and could visually appear out of nowhere. They differentiate in color, being black, gray and even white. They appear also in New California,[1] as well as in Texas.[2]

These rats are even bigger than the mole rats and humans. Their visible spine gives them a disturbing appearance, while their size and power could prove a challenge for an inexperienced wastelander. They can be found in the Midwest,[3] Texas[2] and Mojave Wasteland. The Fallout 3 version was cut from the final release.

The bigger version is equal in size to a mole rat. As a result of radiation exposure, it became a little bigger and a little stronger than the smaller version. The species that exist in the Mojave have acquired white hair, blue glowing eyes, light brown color, and are bigger than the normal species.

Rodent of unusual size[]

Giant rat
Gameplay article: Fallout: New Vegas

The largest of the mutated rats found in the Mojave Wasteland to date, they are identical to their small and giant cousins, save for their increased size and stats. They are aggressive and will attack on sight. This is a reference to the film "Princess Bride" in which the character "Westley"/"Dread Pirate Roberts" fights off a giant rat, after replying to a question about their existence.

Unnaturally large sized rodent[]

These are uniquely large giant rats, with only two in existence in 2281. They are identical in appearance to other giant rats in the Mojave Wasteland, except for size. They are, however, much more aggressive and will attack you on sight along with any nearby mutated rats.

Radrats appear in the Fallout 4 add-on Nuka-World and Fallout 76 and resemble giant rats from previous games.

Notes[]

Story Time Miss Nanny mentions mice during the story "Cinderella" that she will tell to the Vault Dweller as part of a random encounter.[4]

  4. Story Time Miss Nanny: "There once was a girl named Cinderella who lived with her wicked stepmother and two stepsisters. They made poor Cinderella do all their chores, as they did not have the luxury of a General Atomics International Miss Nanny to do chores for them. One day, the family received an invitation to the Prince's royal ball. Everyone was excited, especially Cinderella. She asked if she could go, too. However, her stepmother and stepsisters just laughed. "Of course not, silly Cinderella," her older stepsister said, "You would just embarrass us." Her younger stepsister scowled and said, "You're full of dirt and you don't even have a dress!" So, instead of going to the ball, Cinderella was forced to stay home and clean the floors. Oh how she wished she could go! Then, she heard a kindly old woman's voice. "It's me, your fairy Godmother! I heard your wish, and I will help you go to the ball!" The Fairy Godmother waved her wand and a beautiful dress appeared around Cinderella along with with two glass slippers on her feet. She waved her wand at a pumpkin which turned into a silver carriage, and a family of mice, which turned into a team of horses to pull the carriage. Cinderella thanked the Fairy Godmother, and sped off towards the ball. When she arrived, she was awestruck. She had never seen anything like it. Soon enough, the Prince himself asked her to dance. All eyes were on Cinderella, but her stepmother and stepsister did not even recognize her. They were jealous of the girl dancing with the Prince. The clock struck midnight, and it was time for Cinderella to go before the magic wore off. She ran off, dropping a slipper as she hurried. The Prince searched the kingdom looking for the girl he danced with that night. Eventually he came to Cinderella's home with the slipper. The slipper did not fit any of the women, until Cinderella asked to try on the slipper. Her mother and sisters laughed, but to their surprise it fit! They married, and lived happily ever after in a giant castle with every General Atomics International robot the Prince's vast fortune could buy."
