Grayditch is a settlement located on the outskirts of the Washington, D.C. ruins, south of the Super-Duper Mart in 2277.

Background[]

Before the Great War, Grayditch was an affluent community of brownstone houses and paved brick walkways. The nuclear devastation reduced most of it to rubble, and the post-War settlement of Grayditch is a mere attempt at eking out a living in the remains of the formerly fancy neighborhood.[Non-game 1] The settlement's dangerous location and the surrounding wildlife (giant ants were a constant nuisance) made it undesirable for most settlers, who never chose to stay for long.[1][2]

By 2277, its population was just seven people, almost all of whom had only been there for a year. These seven people consisted of one unnamed resident, two families, and a scientist with a special research project. The Wilks family (Fred and his son Bryan) moved into their house in 2276, while the Brandice family (William, Sheila, and their son Will) moved in across from them in October 2276.[1][3] The scientist, Doctor Weston Lesko, arrived on November 15, 2276, and his actions caused the downfall of the small community.[4]

Doctor Lesko sought to genetically modify the giant ants ravaging the wasteland back to their pre-War size, using the ant colony in the nearby Marigold station for his experiments, injecting their egg broods with an FEV-based mutagen.[5] This backfired, however, and instead of shrinking the ants, he inadvertently increased their aggression and caused them to develop the ability to spew fire. Realizing his errors, Lesko retreated into his lab to try and fix his mistakes, while above ground, the fire ants had overran the town by June 2277.[2][6][7] In the ensuing chaos, Fred Wilks and William Brandice were killed, while Sheila and Will Brandice simply vanished. The unnamed seventh resident fled into the wasteland, leaving Bryan Wilks, hiding in a Pulowski Preservation shelter, the only survivor left in Grayditch.

Notes[]

  • Before Those! is completed, this area has the lowest population out of any settlement. After finding Bryan Wilks a new home, the population will still be one, with the remaining Dr. Lesko.
  • The fire ants scattered about Grayditch will number to about 15 at any given point. They sometimes spawn behind the Lone Wanderer in an area already cleared. After approximately 30 ants are killed, they do not respawn aboveground.
  • In the upstairs bedroom of the Brandice house is a Hard-locked footlocker to the left on the floor as one enters the room. The key can be acquired from William Brandice's corpse in the Marigold station. The footlocker contains a Missile launcher and missile.
  • Old ant corpses may disappear as new ants spawn.
  • An unnamed survivor of Grayditch can be found in a random encounter. If he is spoken to, the location of Grayditch will be marked on the map. He will say that Grayditch is burning to the ground.
  • Bryan Wilks will be found in the town or the surrounding area before the player first encounters him. He will usually approach the player, but he can get frozen in a given spot due to a glitch. If the player agrees to help him, he will proceed to the Pulowski Preservation shelter by the diner. Once the ants are gone, he will return to the Wilks' house.
  • Proceed due south from the Pulowski Preservation shelter that Bryan Wilks hides in during Those!. Look for the building on the right above with the Enclave poster on it. Go past the barricade and up the hill to the rear of this building (two cars in a parking lot). The door that is labeled "Outpost" leads to two rooms with a super mutant and an intelligent ghoul with decent loot including a scoped .44 Magnum.
  • Although it has been overrun by fire ants, one may also encounter radscorpions and raiders in the area.
  • A Talon Company merc may appear around Grayditch.
  • Behind Dot's Diner, there is a trash bin with a Very Hard lock. The key to it can be acquired from Bryan Wilks through an average Speech check.

Bryan Wilks: "Naw. People don't like to stay long in Grayditch. The D.C. Ruins aren't a great place to make a home, you know? In fact, pappa was talking about moving on soon... we've been here for maybe a year."

Bryan Wilks: "Well, there used to be like big regular ants once in a while... but pappa could usually hunt 'em down with Mr. Brandice across the street. It only started getting bad here with these Fire Ants after the Doc got here, yeah."

"Grayditch was once an affluent area before the bombs fell, with fancy brick walkways and brownstones. Now, most of the fancy (but structurally weak) buildings have been blown away, leading to only some of them being usable as shelters. It is the hideout of a small boy and a strange scientist, both unrelated to each other. The area to concentrate on is south of the Sewer Waystation [9.03] and northeast of the Outpost [9.I]."
