I have spent many sleepless nights, deep in thought, pondering just such issues. I have finally come to the conclusion that the burdens and responsibilities associated with the gift of intelligence are countless. There are only two choices available to any thinking being. Either accept life as it comes and make the best of it for yourself and others, or simply cease to be. I have chosen to accept the challenges of life. If this makes me a threat to humankind, then I pity the small mind that finds it so...”
Background[edit | edit source]
The alpha male of the entire pack, Gruthar is the most powerful and most intelligent deathclaw in the group, bar none. His level of intelligence matches that of the most capable men, and has brought with it many benefits... As well as burdens. Gruthar is well aware of the way deathclaws are perceived by the outside world and has spent large amounts of time trying to determine a way in which his pack might coexist with humans. An uncanny trait in a deathclaw bred by the Enclave for combat.
Gruthar went rogue when his pack was dropped into Vault 13, his conscience making him unable to follow their orders. Viewing it as a chance for self-sufficiency, they adopted the Vault as their home. Though they were unable to operate machines, the voice-operated main computer allowed them to use the amenities designed for humans. Gruthar allowed select humans to live in the Vault, usually refugees found during night time patrols. His largest mistake came when he admitted Matt, who feigned friendship only to try and assassinate Kerith, the pack mother.
The human also deliberately shut down the user interface for the main computer, disabling keyboard input and damaging the voice recognition module. Unable to use the Vault's systems, Gruthar reluctantly decided to allow his deathclaws to raid the surrounding areas for supplies, on the condition of not harming humans. He knew it was not sustainable. His son, Goris, knew that as well.
