After seeing the Nukapedian of the Year, why not make a Nukapedian of the month (or shorter, Featured User)? It would encourage the editors to edit, plus they could get an interview and a prize. It could be updated each month, with a poll on MediaWiki:Community-corner. What do you think? Energy X Signature0 18:25, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

I've seen a lot of Wiki's do this and I think it's a nice idea. Some even make usergroups for the month's duration.--TwoBearsHigh-Fiving Intercom01 18:27, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

With a few modifications, can this pass as a template for the user that has been featured? Energy X Signature0 18:44, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

My first thought is how is the user chosen? If it's an open poll, that doesn't really recognize the contributions of a user, but their popularity. If they are chosen by a panel, who makes up the panel and what is the criteria used to choose the featured user? I have no fundamental problems with the idea of a monthly featured user, but if we're gonna do this, it has to be thought out properly. The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 18:49, April 13, 2013 (UTC)
It should be more by the edit contributions than the popularity. In terms on who gets featured, well, I suppose someone can track on how much the users are active. Someone from the chat, perhaps? Energy X Signature0 18:57, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

I think once a month is too often.... I'd suggest once a year is about right... Makes it special. Agent c (talk) 19:15, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

We already have that though, Nukapedian of the Year, I think a featured user every month would encourage more than just people sitting in chat all day. There is a ton of stuff that hasn't been done, projects need finishing, bug's need verifying, and this could be a way that we could encourage users to improve their editing skills. We need to be wary though, make the judging or paneling based not just on quantity of edits, but the quality of those edits. I'd rather have someone who put together several new pages of content in a month get it than someone who made a large amount of small repetitive edits. ---bleep196- (talk) 19:56, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

Well, for that we have the achievement track, and now that I've found the RSS feed for it, everyone who gets one of the bigger achivements gets a place in the news. Agent c (talk) 20:20, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

I've always thought that having a featured user would be a great idea for this site. And probably always will. I've see it in work many times in my adventures over to the Elder Scrolls Wikia (They call it Member of the Month and give the user who got MOTM a banner on their user page - like one stating Admin, Moderator so forth - usually saying MOTM - July 2012 or whatever. This page details how they do it. They mainly just hold a forum where anyone can nominate someone, then the person with the most support wins. In my opinion not the best course of action but it works for the most part.) Could take ideas from them or make it our own, either way, I agree with Gunny that we really should get a good method together to choose. Anyways, personally I feel that we should do it in some form. I do like what Bleep said, like always, quality, over quantity. (Unless it's J's case where he does both ;D) Yet I also feel we shouldn't only look at edits. I feel the featured user should really be a balance of all aspects of the wiki. Or at least attempt it to be. Or actually if overbearing everything strikes a wrong cord, we could have each month be a different area of the wiki. For example, January be the edit focus, February be the Blog focus, March the forum focus and so forth. Just some idea. In the end I probably won't care how we do it expect that it actually happens. --The Old World Relics (talk/blog/contributions) 20:27, April 13, 2013 (UTC)

Nathan said pretty much everything I was going to say. Elder Scrolls does this on a regular basis and it seems to be a good community event. I would use a combination of a Panel and a formal vote, with the panel selecting the user from the top 3 vote-getters. Those 3 should be exempt from the following months poll as well, to ensure it doesn't become a popularity contest between the same 3 users. I haven't thought about that, and seems reasonable and good enough to try. Energy X Signature0 20:39, April 13, 2013 (UTC)
I agree with Follower and OWR. ---bleep196- (talk) 17:31, April 14, 2013 (UTC)
So, here is the poll (will not reveal the featured users yet). So, should this be the final layout? Energy X Signature0 20:44, April 14, 2013 (UTC)

( Maybe something more Fallout themed for the banner? FollowersApocalypseLogoōrdō āb chao 02:16, April 15, 2013 (UTC)

Something that comes to mind - Should this involve those with special rights? The whole purpose of a MOTM is to incite productive editors, which are already supposed to be seen through those granted extra tools. (With the possible exception of chat moderators.) What made me think of this is if we do include editors such as the Administrators, then I can imagine there's going to be quite a few repetitive MOTM awards. A perfect example would be J, who quite easily by-passes most editors in terms of both editing quality and quantity, along with providing Nukapedia with images that are praised even through other sites. Not saying that he doesn't deserve such repeated exposure, but I can imagine that sort of defeats the purpose of having a MOTM award in the first place.
