Infection with hantavirus is often caused through rodent bites, contact with urine, saliva or with rodent waste products. Some hantaviruses cause potentially fatal diseases in humans, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS).
Hanatavirus has an incubation time of 2–4 weeks. Early symptoms of hantavirus include fever, chills, sweaty palms, diarrhea, malaise, headaches, nausea, abdominal and back pain, respiratory problems such as the ones common with influenza, as well as gastro-intestinal problems. In later phases, blood platelet levels drop, which can cause tachycardia and hypoxemia, renal failure, proteinuria, and polyuria.
Hantavirus appears in Fallout 2.
