Hunters are randomly encountered across the Capital Wasteland in Fallout 3.

Background

Wastelander hunter

These hunters are wastelanders who kill animals and sell their meat. They sell items such as mirelurk meat, yao guai meat, mole rat meat and dog meat. They are often found in a group of three. They are friendly to the Lone Wanderer, and when talked to you can ask to buy food, and their inventories are not shared.

Cannibal hunter

The cannibal hunters, only named hunters in-game, are people who find and kill humans and sell their meat. They are often found in groups of three; the standard "party" size for hunter groups. In terms of durability, they are roughly on par with standard mid-level raiders.

When buying from them, they claim they have "the best kind around," and will give you a free sample. They can occasionally be seen hunting fleeing wastelanders, which tells as to the origin of their "strange meat." Sometimes they can also be heard yelling "Save me a drumstick!" while chasing wastelanders, hinting at the cannibalism.

Notes

  • Both types of hunters only appear as random encounters. They do not respawn if killed.
  • If you "steal" their kill (kill the creature before they can) and take the meat from the creature before them, they will attack you.
  • Rock Crick hunters were cut from the game but are in the G.E.C.K.
  • After a cannibal hunter kills their target non-player character, they will proceed to drink a bottle of Nuka-Cola close to the dead body. If the Lone Wanderer stays detected there for too long, the group of hunters will try to kill you too.

Appearances

Hunters appear only in Fallout 3.
