Join the Responders' most prestigious unit - the Fire Breathers.

Into the Fire is a main quest in Fallout 76.

Quick walkthrough[]

  • Finish the mental quiz.
  • Head to the physical test and complete it.
  • Head to the final exam and complete it.

Detailed walkthrough[]

This quest can be started by approaching the Charleston Fire Department and listening to the Protectron's advertisements about joining the Fire Breathers division of the Responders. The player character is prompted to utilize one of the terminals and take a Knowledge Exam on fire safety, the answers to which can be found on information pamphlets scattered around the Charleston Fire Department. Alternatively, the process can be expedited by acquiring the knowledge exam cheat sheet, found next to the master terminal on the second floor. The answers to all 7 of the questions are as follows:

  1. Evacuate as quickly as possible.
  2. A water-soaked rag.
  3. Gently bind the burn with clean bandages.
  4. Retreat immediately.
  5. 1 pt. purified water, 2 ash roses, 2 blight, 2 soot flowers.
  6. Fall back and engage from a distance with firearms.
  7. End his life as mercifully as possible.

The next step is to take a Physical Exam at a testing site at the Charleston Herald building. This starts the quest Runner's High, in which the player character must complete an obstacle course and clear two checkpoints within three minutes. Once this is passed, the final exam is held at the Belching Betty mineshaft in the Ash Heap.

There, a Protectron named Bernie hands out the Fire Breather uniform and Fire Breather helmet and a leveled anti-Scorched training pistol, as well as the Fire Breathers final exam briefing holotape.

Exploring Belching Betty reveals the story of the Scorchslayers, a squad of Fire Breathers initiates, who died fighting the Scorched at the location. The primary objective of the final exam is to activate an emergency beacon in the northeastern end of the mineshaft. Upon the beacon's activation, a new wave of Scorched does attack, while Bernie asks the Vault Dweller via radio to return to him for a final debrief. He then gives the Welcome to the Fire Breathers holotape and asks for the player to return to the Charleston Fire Department for company registration.

Registration can be completed on the Fire Breathers' master terminal on the second floor of the Charleston Fire Department. While putting their name into the system, the player character is alerted of an incoming priority call. Listening to it concludes this quest and starts The Missing Link, ending the Responders portion of the main quest as The Missing Link can only be completed by finishing the Raider section of quests and starting the Free States section of quests. However, the Into the Fire achievement is unlocked upon this quest's completion.

3 Explore the Charleston Fire Department
5 Join the "Fire Breathers"Seems the "Fire Breathers," an elite Responders unit, were based in the Charleston Fire Department. Might be worth checking the place out.
10 Pass the Knowledge ExamJoining the Fire Breathers requires I complete a series of exams, the first being a good, old-fashioned knowledge test. I wonder if I can find the answers around anywhere...
15 (Optional) Search the station for Knowledge Exam study materials
20 Complete the Physical ExamKnowledge exam complete. Now it's time to take care of the physical exam.
30 Initiate the final examAnother exam down! Time to find out what's next. I should access the "Final Exam" entry on the terminal to proceed.
40 Head to the final exam siteJust one more to go. Seems the final step is a practical exam where I'll have to delve into a local mine overrun by Scorched. Oh goody.
45 Collect your kitI spoke to "Bernie," the final exam proctor, who gave me a ticket to collect the equipment I'll need to for the test
50 Listen to the "Fire Breathers Final Exam Briefing" holotapeI received my equipment along with a holotape I need to listen to before beginning the final exam.
55 Activate the emergency beaconI listened to the tape provided by Bernie. Mine full of Scorched, go to the bottom, hit the emergency beacon, come back up. All without getting eaten.
60 Return to BernieI activated the emergency beacon. Now I just need to make it back out of the mine safely.
70 Register with the Fire Breather's computer systemI made it out of the mine alive, completing the Fire Breather's final exam! I've now got to head back to the Charleston Fire Department to register myself.
80 Listen to the priority messageIt sounds like there's an outstanding message from Hank Madigan, the Fire Breather's lieutenant. I should head into the dispatch room to give it a listen.
100Quest finishedQuest completeMadigan believes he found a "game-changer" in the fight against the Scorched. He last checked in from the "Top of the World." Looks like I should probably head there next.

Notes[]

  • This quest can be initiated before the previous quest, An Ounce of Prevention, is completed.
  • A variety of anti-Scorched receiver modifications (for pistols, rifles, and shotguns) can be unlocked from the master terminal on the second floor. Doing so requires to pick up the note from the dead Fire Breathers at theBig Bend Tunnel.
