John Hancock (January 23, 1737 – October 8, 1793) was the first of the signatories on the American Declaration of Independence.
Background[edit | edit source]
Widely known for his recognizably large signature on the Declaration of Independence, Hancock was one of the more noticeable patriots during the American Revolution. Beginning his political career as Samuel Adams' protégé, he presided over the Second Continental Congress and later as the first and second governor of Massachusetts. He was the answer of a question at the National Archives' pop quiz terminals. John Hancock is buried at the Old Granary Burying Ground in Boston.
