I don't know how they missed me. Maybe they didn't. Maybe they knew they'd broken me.

Comm Officer Lenk is the communications officer for Ranger station Foxtrot in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[edit | edit source]

Lenk is an NCR Ranger suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and survivor's guilt. Once a distinguished Patrol Ranger, the breaking point came when she was on a patrol near Hoover Dam. Lenk and her squad had the misfortune of running into a Legion raiding party. Lenk was knocked out by a machete, but the rest of her squad wasn't so lucky and when she came to she found her squad crucified, mutilated, or otherwise butchered. The trauma resulted in a dramatic change in behavior for Lenk with her excessively engaging in drinking and gambling, with predictable consequences.[1]

She ended up deep in debt with the Omertas when her expected streak didn't come and the credit at the casino was due. They gave her an extension, giving her a window to pay the debt back. Of course, since Lenk still hasn't amassed enough money, she is becoming increasingly anxious about the Omertas showing up.[2] The anxiety manifests as a short temper that occasionally drifts into paranoia. But the Omertas aren't Lenk's only problems. Because of her excessive drinking and gambling, Lenk nearly getting her discharged from the Rangers for her conduct, but she was given a second chance.[1] Her posting at Foxtrot is her second and last chance in the Rangers, despite the gambling and drinking, but she has failed to impress her CO so far, and the others stationed at Foxtrot are tiring of her attitude and behavior.[3]

Notable quotes[edit | edit source]

  • "[If you don't tell me, someone else will. I'd rather hear your version.] [SUCCEEDED] We were on patrol near the Dam when a Legion raiding party jumped us. Didn't even have to time to radio it in. I was hit in the head with a machete and knocked out. Didn't kill me, though some nights I wish it had. When I woke up, my nerve was gone. The rest of my squad was crucified, butchered, mutilated. I don't know how they missed me. Maybe they didn't. Maybe they knew they'd broken me. I gambled and drank a lot after that. Got into trouble, but the Rangers gave me a second chance instead of kicking me out. So, here I am."
  • "[What happened between you and the Omertas?] I talked to the cashier at Gomorrah into forwarding me some chips - I was convinced I was due for a hot streak. It, uh, didn't go so well. The Omertas were nice and said they'd give me some time to pay them back. They also said if they had to talk to me about my debt again, they wouldn't be nice the next time."
  • "[<Lie> I'm here because of your debt to the Omertas. Pay me what you've got and you'll get more time.] Here's all the caps I've saved up so far. See? That's a pretty good chunk of what I owe right there!"
  • "[What do you do here?] I operate the radio and call it in if we see any Great Khans moving out in large groups from Red Rock Canyon."
  • "[I brought updated radio security codes from Camp Forlorn Hope.] Oh. Uh... well, yeah, I can do that. Um, thanks."
  • "[I thought NCR Rangers were supposed to be tough and fearless.] I... don't want to talk about it."
  • "[You were too tough to kill, and you'll get payback on the Legion some day.] Maybe. But, thanks for saying it, anyway."
  • "[Pathetic. The Rangers should never have let you become one in the first place.] I... I was different back then."
  • "You're here for the money. I told the Omertas I was good for it! I just need more time!"
  • "You're not part of my unit... no, you're here for the money! I told the Omertas I was good for it!"

Kudlow: "Yeah, it's a damn shame. There was a lot of talk about expelling her from the Rangers, especially once the gambling and drinking started. Being posted here is her second and last chance, and so far, I'm not impressed. Lenk's jumpy all the time, and the others are sick of it."
