This page is to discuss how should we handle users adding music on their talkpages, specifically how or if we should regulate it. The way I see it, there are three possible ways of tackling this, namely:
- Prohibiting it altogether
- Prohibiting setting it on autoplay
- Leaving it unregulated
Please feel free to add your opinion on the pros and cons of each approach, or make brand new suggestions. Limmiegirl Talk! ♪ 23:20, December 22, 2012 (UTC)
Prohibiting it altogether
The userpage is the place for people to express themselves and show who they are in real life, the talk page is for messages. It should just be removed, you can post whatever music on your userpage though. "Semper Invictus" 01:28, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
Prohibiting setting it on autoplay
It's annoying to be confronted with it when I land on a talkpage. I'm muting my sound and/or edit the talkpage to get rid of it. Also, it seems a bit unprofessional if a new user wants to ask a question and first thing he hears is music. I'm ok with people adding it to their talkpage, but autoplay should be disabled. Setting it to autoplay on the userpage is ok, that's the personal space. Jspoel 01:26, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
I find myself in agreement with Jspoelstra here, it's annoying when I'm going to write a message on someones talkpage and all of the sudden I'm hit in the face with music. ---bleep196- (talk) 01:31, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
User page yes, talk page no. I turned mine off my talk page. Even my own music bothered me after a while. The Gunny 01:57, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
I agree with J. Music is good personalisation, but having it on autoplay is simply too obtrusive for what is still a communication tool. --Skire (talk) 01:58, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
Leaving it unregulated
Personally, I think it should be the same as article music, if we were to change the talk page music to non-autoplay then I think we should do the same with article music (and vice-versa). I was originally against autoplay on the articles but I was told that "they can just mute it" so the same should be true for talk pages, as long as it isnt hidden I dont see the issue. This is just a bit of fun, just like having achievements. Yes, at times it can be annoying to some, but it's just not that big of a deal; especially when one is never on someone's talk-page for much longer than a minute or two at a time. (Not to mention that the talk-page music doesn't even play while you're editing it.) Besides, you can just pause the song or turn off your volume if you happen to have need of staying on their talk-page any longer than that. The only thing I would suggest is making hidden auto-players taboo. Some Assembly Required! 01:32, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
I half expect it on talk pages already, the only place it really bothers me is if it's set to autoplay on articles where I'm not prepared for it. And if for some reason I go through a user's talk page history it will start up anyway if the history has it set to autoplay.Great Mara (talk) 01:39, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
As long as its at the top, where I can quickly hit pause, I'm happy. Agent c (talk) 01:59, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
Other pages
Just thought we could open this up a bit... I dont think we ever came to a final decision about other pages... A few of us agreed that on the song page it should autoplay, but not other articles, but this didnt seem to get to a full policy decision... Any thoughts on this at all? - Agent you made your vote just from your personal perspective as a seasoned wikian. What about new users and anons? Not so sure they would like to hear it, especially on an admin's page. About the song pages, autoplay can be activated there; on other mainspace pages it should be disabled in my opinion (like the Fallout 1/2 location pages). Let people make their own choice if they want to hear it; focus should be on the content, not the music. Jspoel 02:32, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
- I'm with the Sigster on this one; off everywhere. If it's off on all articles I'm cool with it being off on talks if and only if it's off on all articles (or at the very least all non-music pages).JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?" 02:39, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
Being an Admin doesn't matter. We're not robots, and we're allowed to participate in extra features just like every other user. If someone is actually offended that we'd have music on our user/talk-page, then that is their own prerogative. :') Some Assembly Required! 02:48, December 23, 2012 (UTC)
