We Salvatores...we will rule New Reno. If a child must die to insure that, it will be...done. There is no other reason.

— Louis Salvatore

Louis Salvatore is the head of the Salvatore crime family of New Reno in Fallout 2. He resides in his apartment on the second floor of the Salvatore's Bar.

Background

The head of the Salvatores is an elderly gentleman, with a gaunt face marked with liver spots.[1] He is the oldest of the crime family heads, his well made suit sharply contrasting with the oxygen tank and breathing mask necessary to keep his respiratory problems in check.[2] Louis observed his family's gradual loss of influence in New Reno with anger. When the opportunity to regain it presented itself, in the form of the Enclave wishing to trade energy weapons for raw chemicals the Salvatores could supply, he seized it. With the new weapons in hand, his men massacred Mordino made men in the streets. The twitching bodies, cut apart by lasers, were a message to the Mexican crime family: Salvatores were back in business.[3]

Merely teaching the Mordinos a lesson wasn't enough for the elderly crime lord. To further weaken their drug empire, Louis concocted a plan to trigger a war between the Wrights and the Mordinos. He arranged for Renesco to poison a Jet canister with radscorpion venom and then sell it to Richard Wright, a young drug addict. He was confident that, in time, the Wrights would identify the cause of Richard's death and retaliate against the primary suppliers of the drug in Reno. The resulting war would weaken both families, leaving Reno ripe for the taking by the Salvatores.[4]

Effects of player action

  • After his assassination a bereaved Mason will bemoan never confessing his love for his paternal employer.
  • If the player wishes to guard the secret transaction in the desert, they should make sure to be polite to Mason and Mr. Salvatore himself (Charisma 6 and above, always choosing "Yes, Mr. Salvatore" and similar servile dialogue options). In this case, after completing the Renesco extortion quest, Salvatore will give the player a 25% cut of the protection fee and ask that they protect the transaction with the Enclave.

Appearances

Louis Salvatore appears only in Fallout 2.

Behind the scenes

He is most likely inspired by a similarly-named character from the animated film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Not only do they share similar names but their appearances are similar, they are both quite elderly, and both need to keep an oxygen tank and mask at hand at all times.
